THEY had the damn British Navy to deal with, had this woman had to deal with the Royal Navy she would've been squashed like a bug, her opposition was very light therefore it's her organizational skills that should be considered so great, not so much her fleet which consisted mainly of small ships and actually nothing resembling something that could stand up to a Blue water navy from Europe, as proof, she steered clear of any Royal Navy squadrons and made absolutely sure not to step on their toes, she knew her limit

Three important parts of the story given short shrift here:
    A) Many of Ching Shih's pirates were Koreans, rather than Chinese. When her original regulations were not widely obeyed, she purged much of her own ranks and recruited Koreans more willing to do as she said.
    B) Ching Shih' pirates were among the most feared and ruthless martial artists and hand-to-hand fighters of the time. They incorporated a brutal regimen of hand-to-hand training into their discipline. fighting to the death among themselves in training if necessary. They were so feared in this respect that Western navies did not even bother to engage them in boarding actions, but instead stayed at a distance and relied on firepower . . . of which they had plenty.
    C) Later in her career, she did face a widespread revolt in her own ranks, which was a big part of what brought her career to an end.

People like Caesar and Alexander the Great killed many more people than her, but retain their glory, because it was a different time. Even though i don't like that she killed people, I understand why she did it, and respect her immensely. The only way for a woman to earn real respect from the men of that time was to beat them at their own game, and that was a game of strength and force. Thank you for covering her! Harshhaze . I don’t think she minded sharing the power with her husband that much. As mentioned it was a 50/50 equal deal. She shared the power with her step-son/second husband in the same way I think. The further along in the tale however the more obvious it is who the real mastermind is.

A note for accuracy of the Qing Dynasty map: (1) Taiwan was part of Qing China until 1895 when it was ceded to Japan. It should be colored in this video, as it was ruled by Qing during this time. (2) The northern Burma, northeastern British Raj border line was not accurate. The map shown in the video followed the MacMahorn Line drawn in 1914 unilaterially by Britain. It does not reflect the actual border at the time. Please use this link on Wikipedia for accurate map outlines. zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%B8%85%E6%9C%9D%E8%A1%8C%E6%94%BF%E5%8C%BA%E5%88%92
