back home in Trinidad where Gomes is from he is known as MR DEPENDABLE. never lets you down and had this annoying knack of being able to score a century with the opposing team not realising he was in the nineties untill he only needed one more single to score a century. he got most of his runs from little singles and twos. never ever hooked and never took risky flashy shots.

@@trinihammer sounds about right. Even if Australia would get a breakthrough of the upper order, Larry would come out and stick around for sure. I’d have him in my WI best xi, which is pretty much that team from the 80s. A lot of 80s Aussie kids came to support the Windies due to the class of that era, me very much included. I still miss them to this day. Kim Hughes famously said words to the effect that all batting records since that era are irrelevant as they didn’t have to face that Windies side every summer.

@@Bluepillphil-d1w the secret about Gomes was nobody paid attention to him. all the aussie fielders were looking at the other flashy west indian batsmen at the other end.
i remember one year against austrailia Gomes got a century and you could literally see on the aussie fielders faces disbelief that he was on 99 and needed only one more run to get his century. Gomes all of his innings was picking up a single here and nudge a single there and flick another single there and before you know it he wants one more run for his century.

The West Indies team of the mid to late 70’s throughout the 80’s and then leading to the early to mid 90’s was there strongest side. But the 80’s team especially was something to awe about. They would’ve definitely made the Steve Waugh team cry like babies.

It's difficult to compare eras, but there are 2 facts. The WI batsmen of that era did not have to play against Malcolm Marshall, Garner, Holding. Viv Richards struggled against Joel Garner in 1st class cricket. But at the same time, Ponting and Hayden did not have to face McGrath and Warne. It is difficult to say how the contests would go. I think Ponting and Hayden would definitely struggle against the WI bowlers. And Viv Richards would have some 50/50 battles with McGrath. Overall maybe I would give the edge to the WI.

The years from the beginning of the 70's through until probably mid to late 90's (at a pinch) were filled with some the greatest players on all teams and some fantastic matches they provided.

This may be '83 or '84, I was a teenager and big fan of Windies. In my home we had a small radio and I was hardly listening to this commentary through SW2. My mother was shouting me why are you putting your ears inside the Radio due to the very poor signal strength those days. If I am not mistaken great Mr. Brian Johnston was in the commentary. It was a wonderful night for me since Windies won this match and made it a 5-0 white wash. I was lucky enough to watch that highlights today as an adult of which having a son similar to my that age. What a wonderful memory. Thanks Trini Todbone.

This was the 2nd test at Lords in ‘84. This was an amazing tour for the West Indies. Greenidge scored another double century, also Viv hit his unbeaten 189* in the first one day and Marshall took 7-53 with a broken hand at Headingly. Just a few highlights.

It's 1984, second test of the "Blackwash" series in England (same happened in the Caribbean in 1985/6). I think the English commentator is Jim Laker, not Brian Johnston, who was mainly a radio commentator. You also get the peerless Richie Benaud.

Benaud? Absolutely. One of the greatest commentators in *ANY* sport. Insightful, laconic, droll, intelligent with extremely dry humour, and of course the master of understatement. laker, however, was a dour, humourless curmudgeon void of any wit or true intelligence who uttered trite platitudes and sounded like he had a perpetual cold. My theory is that people in their 40's through their 60's liked laker primarily due to hearkening back to their youth with very rose coloured spectacles. Let's face it - the miserable old git laker was never off the air!

Larry Gomes only hit one 6 in his whole career, and he hit it by mistake the ball just sailed over the line

Not a helmet in sight. And even with those tiny bats, scoring at nearly a run a ball...!

Greenwich often wore a helmet. Not really needed against this bowling attack on that wicket.

Clive Lloyds team was like a pack of marauding cheetahs, panthers, tigers, hyenas & some wild dogs. Man, what wonderful cricket they gave us. Every team was running scared of them. Surprisingly only India stood up to the Windies.

Actually do you not recall that India are the only team to forfit a match part way through an innings rather than carry on batting against the fast bowling of Lloyds West Indians.

Mate India was lucky to grab a victory in 83 final . Probably complacency and
Arrogance cost them the hat tricks of world cups . It was a stunning victory
Especially the catch taken by Kapil Dev was brilliant and turning point of the game .
Later the Windies blanked India in tests in India .

Spot on...it indeed was a Tusker - a very heavy and meaty piece of wood, with a distinct curve along the lower back ridge of the bat.

West Indies now have given up the common wealth sport for Basketball , baseball and athletics. Now it is just used as marketing for any team especially Indian team when they beat them. Just a way to become millionaire against setup competition.
    Useless sport now.
