  • Jupiter's auroras are the most spectacular in our solar system and produce enough energy to briefly supply all of human civilisation! But, what causes them? And why do they pulse like clockwork?

Awesome episode, awesome presenter. I had no idea Jupiter's magneto sphere extended all the way to Saturn. That's crazy. And 50% liquid metal hydrogen! What is at the very core that the animated graphic revealed? Do we still think that is an iron core? Thanks BBC Earth Lab and Dr. Josie

Great Video. Reminded me of love death and robots: "Io's metallic core generates a magnetic field connecting its own poles with the poles of Jupiter. Io's volcanoes emit sulphur dioxide and oxygen. Magnetosphere. Rotating fields. What. does. this. sound. like?"... "Sounds like... a machine..."

Fun fact: if Jupiter’s magnetic field was visible from Earth, it would be larger than the Moon.

i would be interested in the conductivity of metallic hydrogen. if it conducts electricity well then its poles could be just playing ping pong with electric charges though the planets core. something to think about. might also explain the large number of storms at the poles. interesting stuff

Jupiter is incomprehensible large- and some reckon relatively close to being a small star.

With that much hydrogen under that much pressure it’s almost as if Jupiter is an immature star. So with that thought, is it possible that Jupiter and it’s moons should be viewed as a miniature solar system within our larger solar system?

See Arthur C. Clark's 2001 series, where the notion of igniting Jupiter is explored.

Will we ever reach the advancement, so wr can get a size of a space object in standard measureing units, what 7.5 billion human is using and not a middle age remnant only 500 million humans understand, and all the others have to convert? Even the builders use meter, but than an ashole translate it to feet.
