Belizean Fry Jacks

  • In this video I do a remake of Fry Jacks or Fry Cakes to include more instructions and keeping everything uniformed with our theme. Fry Jacks are a simple fried bread that can be the difference between going to be hungry of being satisfied during times of recession or famine. I can be eaten with jams and jellies, peanut butter, confectioner/powdered sugar or meats and cheeses or alone. This is a very versatile meal.

    _Quick Tip_
Ensure oil is already hot and ready before dropping in the dough, otherwise it can absorb oil and the texture is wrong.

I'm native american aka Indian from the Navajo tribe and we make these but we call them frybread and we eat em with everything. Taste great as a base for some tacos aka Navajo taco or Indian taco. FYI I never learned how to make it and nobody would ever give me a recipe (taboo or somethin to ask) but now thx to u I can make "fry jacks" "fry cakes" or as we call them "frybread"

Thank you for this wonderful yet simple recipe! I was born in Guatemala, lived in Belize for 4 years in my early 20s, spent another substantial part of my life in Georgia, USA and now live in Japan where I was craving Belizean Fry Jacks. After watching a number of videos, I settled on your recipe and have been making these more often than I care to admit!
    Love your show!

I've always done fry jack with water. since viewing your video I've been using milk. It is delicious.
My finance prefers it with the powdered sugar, I prefer it with cheese, butter, beans, eggs, or some type of meat.

I ate one of mine with Nutella spread on it. Also, I added cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar to one of the cut dough balls then spread with a little butter and a little more of the cinnamon sugar. Also, I will add a little cooked pork sausage, sage to one of the dough balls for a quick breakfast.

Hi Yvonne, just add the milk slowly so you don't over wet the dough. If this happens you will have to add more flour and it'll get stiff. I'll be waiting for your update.

Good afternoon Ms.Barbara. My name is Latoya, and I just wanna tell you that your cooking show has help me so much. I am currently a sophomore in college in New York, and being away from home has been challenging because I'm use to my Belize cuisines. Because of your show, I am now able to prepare my own home cook meal and eat healthier. So far I made milk cake, fry jack, johnny cake ,fudge, meat pie, split peas and pigtail. Thus I must say they all came out perfect.

I focus on what my goals are him.. I used to be overweight myself until I lost 68lbs in 12 months. Now I train 5 days a week and havnt looked back. Congrats on your transformation I applaud you. Tell jada to hang in there, it's the carbs that is the problem and not so much the fats we eat. I ate no complex carbs for 12 months. Just a high protein, low carb, moderate good far diet and exercise. It can be done. best wishes to you all :-)

You are strong Angie. Thankfully we only make these on Saturday's or Sunday's and we each only eat one. The rest of the week we drink a protein shake or eat a high fiber, high protein breakfast. The whole family is working hard to help Jada lose weight and keep it off and of course I never want to go back to where I was a few years ago. Keep up the good work on your end. :)

SO easy to make. I'm definitely going to try them. They are almost the same as Indian Fry Bread and I LOVE those breads. They sell those at Fairs with cinnamon sugar in Naperville, Ill. But I've heard they also make them in to TACOS. I'm Mexican but to me, they don't qualify as tacos.

In Utah, they have "fried scones". Which are not like British scones. They're basically any standard, white, yeast, bread dough, which is rolled out to about 1/4" thick, cut into circles or rectangles, fried, and then served with honey, butter, and/ or powdered sugar. So, very similar to fry jacks, except thicker and yeast leavened. I bet that's where your Utah niece started using powdered sugar on her fry jacks.

I think I rolled mine too thin. It was more like a tortilla, than fry bread. The flavor was like fried wontons. The good thing is I like fried wontons, so it's still a success. Next time though, I will work to get them thicker like yours. It's good to know that you they taste yummy either way. Thanks so much for the recipe!

I buy a smaller frying pan to conserve oil. My mom told me to get puffed up fried jacks you need extra hot oil. And if the pot is too hot your oil will evaporate.

I don't add salt either because baking soda is a sodium and adding the salt affects me too.. I used unsalted butter and sometimes coconut milk or warter. In Nicaragua on the Atlantic coast we call it fry tortilla. I also use the tortilla press. Yes, I'm lazy. Hahaha, Hahaha.

these came out great! so easy and so few ingredients. i was surprised you didnt use any butter. i was a bit worried because the dough was kinda stiff and i thought it was because i used cold milk, but they turned out fine and were quite tasty. eating them now with refried beans

Hi Chicpeligroza, I do feel you on that taboo thing. Majority of my recipes no one wanted to show me too. I love that you can make this work for one of your cultural foods. Maybe you'd like to share the recipe for Navajo taco with me. What's the toppings? I absolutely love the Native American culture and would love to learn and share some to dishes on the show. Thank you for commenting.

Hi Kendra..wow what an awesome compliment he gave you. "The best cook" and to think I may have played a small role in that. I can show it all, but if you didn't take the initiative and do it, it wouldn't mean anything. Anything I can ever do for you just let me know.

Hi Oscar, I always put the website right next the image of the book at the end of the video. I'm not allowed to put links here in the comments, so I'll have to spell everything out. barepantryshow (dot com) I'll be sure to start saying the website on each episode. Thank you so much for your support.
