  • Today it's the bustle hustle...
    Sorry, I had to. I do apologize this video is a bit shorter than the last few, but luckily these Victorian skirts do go together quite quickly, and of course in my rush I unfortunately didn't get as much filmed of the sewing process as usual. I hope you are all staying safe and are taking time for yourselves during these stressful days.

    But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
    First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

    And as far as slapping things on... you should see some of the videos looking at actual Victorian/Edwardian/early vintage pieces. The messiness inside on practically all of them makes me feel so much better on ugly-but-hidden bits!

    You look stunning. Your sewing skills and tutorials are remarkable. I have collected vintage fashion for forty years. I have about 1000 garments dating from 1860-1960. Your attention to detail is amazing. I was a re-enact or as well as a tour guide and docent for architectural tours and always wore an appropriate, original outfit. I later produced several vintage clothing fashion shows for various charities and worked at several museums. I am not able to do that anymore. So, you definitely provide me with an outlet for my love of costume and fashion. I look forward to all your posts. Thank you.

    Luxurious taffeta is the perfect choice for any bustle skirt because of the way that it bends and moves the light around it. Because of that, I vote for more ribbons...a gal can't have enough sparkle. I loved it last week and loving it more in the light of day. Brava!

    The intro and the exit music was great! Really set the mood. The gown came out beautifully and the colors look great on you. Having the two bows, in my opinion, made it look more like a Southern belle style. I think one bow with the streamers would look better, unless a Southern belle is what you wanted it to look like. So happy you got it done on time for yourself and I hope you had a Happy Halloween! Thanks so much!

    I'm not blaming you Bianca, because there are many sewists who sew over pins, but I was sewing a slip (based on your 20's slip but actually completely different) out of some 70's nylon (in a crazy Alphonse Mucha meets Joan Miro print) and I sewed over a pin and my thin needle bent into a 90° angle! I love the asymmetrical overskirt, I think more trim and bows and ruffles are period correct, but I really like the sort of "minimalist" feel of your dress. It seems modern and almost futurist in a way.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you Natalie! There were definitely more "minimal" sleek designs in the later half of the 1880's too, so both are accurate, and I like both too so it's hard to choose!

Although for now it looks so good just with that one bow. And I’ll watch pretty much any video you put out - if you always did the same thing you’ll never learn anything new, and neither will we! Enjoy any rest you get and fingers crossed re election...

    As usual, I am watching this while in bed drinking tea, and as usual I have an overwhelming desire to get up and put on makeup. Stunning as always my dear!

    A truly stunning creation and although decades apart in fashion design - reminds me of the emerald dress that Kim Novak wore in the interior restaurant scene in "Vertigo".

      Thank you Chae! I've been forcing myself to take most of this week pretty easy, play in the sims 4, do all the laundry, it's been extra strange 😅

    I'm so completely in love with this project! 😍😍😍 Don't sweat the ugly stitching on the inside/attaching the trimmings. It's super common in clothing of the period, from what I've seen from other videos!

      Thank you Angela! It is comforting that seamstresses of the past were also like "just tack the bow on there we're leaving, the coach is out front alreadyyyy!"

    I love this series! I was slightly confused in your getting dressed video why the bustle wasn't centered over the back, but now I understand the look you were going for! I thought you explained everything very well and was able to easily follow along 😊
