- Hello hello everybody! For our next video, we'll build the Bold As Love Fuzz, based on the Fuzz Face, originally manufactured by Arbiter Electronics until Dunlop took over in 1993 . A truly iconic pedal and one of the most famous fuzz pedals used by Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend, David Gilmour etc.

Transistors PNP Germanium:
Started with 2x AC126 with hFE 90-100 and 100-110. Switched to two NOS-transistors, 2SB178 with hFE 70-80 and 100-110.
Anyone who decides to build this should really replace the 470R (470 ohm) resistor with a 1k variable resistor (trim pot). It allows you to control the output of the pedal without negatively effecting it's tone. It just makes the pedals volume control much more useable since it has more volume to work with.

Damn! Unbelievable that Dunlop asks 150 bucks for such a simple circuit, let alone in a big unusable enclosure. When COVID19 is over and all parts are again available, I'll try a DIY Fuzz Face build.
It's pretty easy to use russian germanium npn transistors as well. I mix and match the ones I still work off of from buying bulk about 10 years ago. Alot available are low gain but have little leakage so for q1 they work well, I use gt404s for q2. With high leakage you can sometimes use a silicon diode in series with the emitter following proper polarity.

the design don't came out of nowhere man
I just built a fuzz face almost identical to this one with a TC1044Scps charge pump that I used instead of the recommended max1044 even though I have both. But it's in an enclosure with an NPN silicon treble booster. So it's basically a reverse analogman Sunlion. For the fuzz face I used two Germanium PNP NTE102'S at first (Q1 had an hFE of about 80 and Q2 of about 103.4) and it was ok but it was a little too warm. So next I sourced an NTE102A (hFE = 134) that I put into the Q2 position and it sounds perfect now. It's got just the right amount of high end without loosing the full bottom end. And adjusting the bias for less voltage at Q2's collector makes a great gated fuzz tone and raising the voltage makes it warmer until you get really high at which point it's a smooth non gated Velcro type fuzz tone . So to be clear now Q1 is about 80 hFE and Q2 is about 134 hFE. I also replaced the 470R (470 ohm) resistor since the pedals output volume was lower then I wanted. I put a 1k variable resistor (trim pot) in its place and cranked it all the way to 1k and the pedal has much much more output and along with the volume knob that made the pedal dramatically more versatile. I highly recommend to anyone who builds a Fuzz Face to either use a 1k - 1.5k resistor instead of the 470R or a 1k-1.5k variable resistor.

I'd recommend building a Marshall Supa Fuzz instead (or afterwards). Basically adds a transistor stage to the fuzz face type circuits. Much more forgiving of transistor specs. Fuzz faces can vary quite a bit depending on the transistors used.

The trim pot needs to be accessible. I've got a tone stack blend cap adding a .47uf to cut some bass for when your wanting that.
I agree that's how I built the fuzz face in my reverse Sunlion pedal. I also highly recommend an internal 1k variable resistor replacing the 470 ohm resistor. It raises the output dramatically without negutivly edge ting the tone so your volume control is much more useable and versatile. I wonder why that hasn't become a staple in fuzz face clones yet cause it's so much better with more output. You can still set it at a low output with the volume but you'll also have extra volume on tap for raising the low output when the bias is rolled back when your after a Velcro fuzz tone. It just really makes the pedal much more versatile.

One rookie question, at the end you said to set the trimpot to taste. I guess this is the knob that adjust fuzz? Just making sure this isn't something I have to do when I'm soldering/asembling etc
Hi! The trim pot is the small internal potentiometer which is only accessible from the inside of the pedal, so before you close it we suggest that you try the pedal out and adjust it. It determines the voltage through the transistors if I'm not mistaken, which adjusts the taste of the fuzz sound. On the outside you have the 'volume' and 'fuzz' knobs which can be set on the fly!

@@pablopower6297 yes the analog man version has it, he uses a 5kb pot but u can use a 10kb pot for more options

Thanks! It can depend on many things, but I would say it mostly has to do with transistor type, hFE values and such.

If you're in Europe try ordering them from musikding.de, that's what we did. Otherwise they should be available at any electronics shop, try searching for 'transistor socket'

Hey great video. I've built my pcb for the circuit tested it and it's not working. I'm not sure if I'm wiring it up incorrectly. Or if I've got the wrong IC chip. At the moment ik using a TC 1044S but in the diagram it says that the chip to use is a max 1044 csa. Any chance someone could give me some guidance this my DIY build.
Question: is it possible not to use the TC1044S and instead bias the signal?
so it dosent matter what germanium transistors you buy..just buy what ever and find a couple that sound good from the batch? if that's the case that is good..Because I bought a pcb and small bear stays sold out of what is recommended on the parts list.So it's like i have this pre made of the dallas and all the parts but the fuzz face transistors..Uggh

great video! I'm planning on building my own fuzz face, and I'm wondering if i could use an external pot for the bias instead of an internal trim pot. is that even a good idea? if so, what kind of pot should i use?

Of course! For reverb you probably have to go digital, but there are plenty of analog delay schematics out there. These are in general a bit more complex than a fuzz pedal however

What modifications would you do to a fuzz face pedal when the guitars volume is turned down that would get that clean glassy texas metal tin can sound
-- because it sounds like SRV is playing in a metallic metal tin can and its from him turning down the strat guitar volume know that the fuzz pedal is being used as a specialized EQ parameter resonance like a cocked wah setting. If you were to design the fuzz face pedal to get a variety of different kinds of texas glassy metal tin can sounds, what would you do to the fuzz face?

Hi, easiest mod would be to try out different transistors as they all have their own characteristics. Another thing you could do is change the input cap to a lower value, see if that helps. If you really want to go in for it, I read about adding a switchable pot to the input working in the same way as the volume knob, but now you can control it with your foot.
