He says multiple times over the seasons he’s simply a farmer trying to build up his family and people. Lagerhta realized before her death ubbe did as well
What Ragnar feels in this scene may resonate with all of us on some level... We all aspire to ambition, to power, to money but we forget that the most precious moments of our life are those spent with family, friends... Nowadays success has become so obsessive that we forget that a simple life is also a good life...
@@eddyhosry4285 the idea he adopted a christian boy he raised him and loved him like a son without rejecting him because he was different and he had different beliefs and he wanted to join him in the same heaven means it's one of the greatest man our world has known
Nah I've seen plenty. I just don't get moved by much- detach myself easily. My mates called me a cyborg because i didn't cry at the beginning of 'Up!' lol
the goodbyes to gyda, athelstan, losing bjorn and lagertha... he just fucking nails these scenes.. and it's all in his eyes and the controlled physical moves. it's amazing the depth of the emotion he conveys..
Also I gotta say Björn's actor is also brilliant. When Björn is angry he sounds and behaves EXACTLY like Ragnar. He truly makes Björn Ragnar's son. It's amazing to watch.
This scene is so good and so out of the blue, it just surprises you as much as Ragnar, after all this time, what Ragnar yearns most is his beginnings, what he was not satisfied with, remember him in the beginning? He was so easy going, smiling, had a nice family, and friends, and a loving wife who shared strong affection. Now what he has? Power, might, fame, wealth, but all of that was good when he was trying to achieve them, after he managed to invade Paris, he looks around and thinks 'Soooo, what am I supposed to do now?' Imagine how horrible it is for him, he never loved Aslaug, married her because he thought it is his fate, all his friends he bonded with are dead, Eric, Leif, Arne, Torstein, Athelstan. Floki is torn, Lagertha is gone, his brother is a traitor and he knew from the very beginning that Rollo's a traitor. He both has everything he dreamed of, and nothing at the same time. He said that he would give far more than Odin gave in order to achieve what he wants, apparently, now he misses the things he sacrificed. I mean I would miss Lagertha, who wouldn't. Personally I don't think Aslaug is a bad woman either, like Ragnar, she thought it was her fate, now she's badly treated, neglected, doesn't feel any love, nobody actually needs her except for Ivar.
What we sacrifice for what we want. People are not satisfied with the small things they have. Yet when they have it all they wish for the small pleasures in life or regret their decision and yearn for the simple life. Then again ragnar did not want any of this, he just wanted to explore new lands, he never wanted to be earl or king. Careful what you wish for!
Travis Fimmel has some of the most powerful and expressive eyes I've ever seen on screen. He can carry an entire scene with a stare. The show just isn't the same now.
It's so upsetting seeing gyda again, but to know he still thinks of her is a beautiful thought. This is in my opinion the most heart gripping scene of the entire series, closely followed by Ragnar's goodbye to Gyda.
I was so happy when they showed Gyda was still on his mind. Bjorn lost a daughter and moved on very quickly, having been a very uncaring father. I thought Ragnar viewed the past as the past, and had decided not to dwell upon Gyda regardless of his initial feelings at her loss. But seeing her here, in this wish come to life, was heartbreaking.
Watching the series for the first time and I always thought why Ragnar never thought or seemed sad about his daughters death. Then I saw this scene and it hit hard. It’s almost like the show runners want you to feel just as sad as Ragnar or realize he’s a man suffering in silence. Powerful scene.
I think the reason why this scene hits so deep is that we all have these moments, those moments when we look out of the window and we see that sweet vision of a life we could have had.
Ive been watching the Vikings for the first time this past month and when this scene happened it hit hard. Especially seeing Gyda who I thought Ragnar had just forgotten about.
I love the little things in this scene like the finger tapping at 2:01 and the nervous looking around. You can really get the feeling that ragnar is seriously unsettled by what he just saw. Just another example of Travis Fimmel knocking it out of the park
After warching this episode I decided that when tv series ends, I will watch the first episodes. Just to remind me how beautiful and light was Ragnar's life before... This scene killed me!
This is one of the most powerful scene on tv i've seen, when you think about it it just show you how ragnar could have lived together with lagertha, bjorn and Athelstan and how he could have had a happy and peaceful live, and now he is king but you can see the sadness in his eyes, he is unhappy, he is not together with Lagertha, his son almost died in the battle and Athelstan is dead.It shows that even if you are a king even if you have everything you want, if you do not have the things that metered to you, nothing will make you happy
Very well said. When i watch this scene, i just went "Aww the past, his daughter, and Althelstan was there... What could have been is now gone." The expression of Ragnar made is sadder.
Filsoh Don't forget his daughter Gyda :) ..whose death he missed out as he was out when she died. And then all of a sudden Aslaug gets pregnant he marries her becomes famous and Lagertha leaves him. His daughter's death, raiding and Aslaug's introduction killed his marriage with Lagertha and his old simple life. Probably if Gyda was alive this wouldn't have happened rapidly.
in my opinion this is one of the best series i have watched till date. I have watched this series from start to finish 2 times without any regrets. From curious farmer to betrayed king.
despite all he's achieved, his true home has always been that simple beginning with his wife, son, daughter, and friend - and through his actions and desires, he lost all of them - what is life when all the rest has gone?
I just cant get over how epic this scene is. Ragnar looking at what might have been, looking away, and then glancing back with a look of fear and shame to see it vanish before his eyes.
What is great about this scene is that it applies to each and every one of us. We tend to ignore the value of what we have until they're gone forever. We tend to leave our simple lives filled with peace and joy for burdens that we cannot carry on. This scene is a perfect example of how good a good script, acting, music and cinematography can deeply affect the viewers.
+Robert Farrell Hopefully they manage to continue it for a few seasons with Bjorn, Ivar, and the rest conquering England. And raiding Italy. But it'll probably end with Ragnar's end.
+TheScholar74 bbc is already doing it with 'The Last Kingdom', tho it feels very cheesy and forced to me (that series) compared to Vikings and the original book (Saxon Tales)
This is easily my favourite scene from Vikings. We understand that despite all Ragnar has accomplished, he longs for the simpler times in his past which he didn't appreciate in his youthful eagerness to make a name for himself. All told through visuals no dialogue.
@@CDexie The medium is the message. she died with his wife while he was away conquering. before this moment of regret of doing that. the original comment is quote made by the wife to Ragnar a while after.
Best moment in the scenes. I captures so many emotions and so much pain, tragic and heartship. Acting perfect, music sublime, scenes hitting right in the feels. I think every man has his own version of "farm and happy times" while listening to this music - his own daydream of moments long gone.
Alot of people dont like how they made Ragnar this season but i love it. He is not as cool or whatever but the character development I think is very very good and the acting of travis fimmel is fucking fantastic.
"Odin gave his right eye for wisdom. . . but I would give far more." I think Ragnar's chararcter is a personification of this line. How ambition can drive us so fiercely to a goal that we end up losing everything from the sacrifices we made to attain it.
I recently came out of prison/detox, and I’ll never forget being in the sweat box (prison van) going from court and the van went drove through my childhood neighbourhood. And this scene, especially the music was all that was running through my mind and the look on my face was exactly as Ragnar’s. The choices we make right? We truly are wretched, flawed creatures.

Outstanding scene and up there with the end of Last Of The Mohicans which is ironic , the same composer!
This was always my favorite scene from the series. Ragnar’s ambition cost him everything at the end, everything he held close to his heart anyways. I believe in this moment, deep down, he begins to come to the conclusion that a simple life with his family was all he really needed. At this point, however, things are too far gone to turn back.
This scene really broke my heart💔 it's all ragnar ever TRULY wanted (and the music! I like how he slowly looks back when he knows no one is looking at him and I like the way his eyes move like he wanted to see that vision again
The best scene I've ever seen in my life, my soul is broken everytime I watch this video...
My heart is broken with this
Back when he had everything a person needs..one of the best scenes i have ever seen on screen..simple and powerfull at the same time
