Most sparrows are friendly in nature and have a good song.
I had to dislodge a family of European sparrows this week at work, they made their nest in an exhaust fan vent. I knew they were in there and didnt say anything to the boss, figuring Id clear out the nest after the young ones left.
One of the tenants complained to the boss so I had to due my duty, when I opened the louvers of the duct 4 fledglings flew out, one by one. They made it at least 30 feet to the roof of the garage so they were definitely ready. As I pulled the remains of the nest out there was one runt left, it surprised me as it flew to the ground, hiding under my pickup truck just feet away. Didnt take long for the Dad to show up and he gave me the business, leading the runt off to the shrubs. I peeked in on it later and it was safely tucked in a very thick shrub so I hope it gets its feathers soon.
Not a great day at work, but Ive been having a singing contest with an Oriole out at the lake place, every time Im out front working it sits above and and we "trade" songs. I think Im losing. Had another good look at a Pileated today so that was fun, maybe 20' away, it was keeping an eye on me from a Norway pine. That made up for the sparrow anyway.
Aww so sorry you had to do that. Not much you can do but at least things seemed to go well for the little ones. Thanks for doing all that you could. :) By the way, that is pretty cute about the singing contest with the Oriole, haha! I'd say you have some tough competition there, hard to beat. @@LesleytheBirdNerd : Thanks. Hey, Ive wanted to ask you, have you ever filmed a ruffed grouse doing its crazy dance? Ive been wandering around the woods for almost 50 year and finally saw a male grouse do its dance last Fall.
Id heard the stories from friends over the years but never did know if they were pulling my leg or not. Id love to get it on film some day, its really amazing how awesome their neck feathers look, truly something to see.
@@repetemyname842 I only ever seen it once, that was back in 2014. I did get a small bit of it on video but it's not that long because I spooked him. It was so strange to see, really cool
@@LesleytheBirdNerd : Awesome, it is a sight to behold for sure. The birds I saw were coming daily to eat Serviceberries and I wondered if it was possible the fruit had fermented a bit?
The grouse was with at least 2 hens and it looked to be 5 or 6 juveniles. He would land on the ground and go into his dance until they all flew down and followed him up to the road for some gravel. Never seen anything like it.
Wasnt brave enough to try and crack the door of the cabin to try and film, I would sit inside and watch with my binoculars. I should set my trail camera up on that spot this year to see if I can get video.

Do animals have absolute pitch? These lovable sparrows seem to deliberately sing with a perfect interval (fourth).
That’s the first time I hear a bird singing in a fixed clearly recognizable interval
When my Mom would hear them sing she'd say "Dear Canada Canada Canada", they are a regular here in the summer.
Their song has always been a favorite of mine too. I would hear it on a mountain top here in new england during summer at sunset. The sparrow would near the top of a pine, and the sky would be iridescent, and the air carrying scents of balsam and moss. Those moments were deeply moving and the bird's song was tied to those feelings and memories.

I’ll never get over their bright yellow eyebrows. It’s just so adorable when birds look like they’re wearing some kind of bright make up, like the yellow brows here, or the rosy cheeks on a Cape May warbler. Delightfully out of place.
Thank you Thank you for this. I"m in South Carolina and last November I noticed a birdsong which I'd never heard before. I would come out on my porch every morning to be greeted by their soul stirring, song, happy but yearning, which resonates right to my heart. I searched about 75 birdsongs on UA-cam and finally found out that it was this bird. I would play the song on my phone from the UA-cam video and they would not only answer back but 7 or 8 of them would come flock around the Crepe Myrtle trees near the back porch where I would be sitting. They would answer my birdsong every single time. It brought tears to my eyes, the tones are so beautiful. All of a sudden, they were gone. I was so worried, afraid I'd never hear or see them again, but your video explained their migratory and breeding patterns so I'm hopeful and excited to see and hear them again this October or November. What an amazing bird.

I’m from New England and have so many memories of hearing these guys while camping. My favorite song :)
Beautiful little bird, wish we had them in the foothills of the Sierras. We do have the White Crowned Sparrow which is very similar.
These sparrows are a welcome sign of the colder season here in my area. Once trees have lost most of their leaves, DST has ended, the first frost of the season has happened, and Thanksgiving has gotten closer, these cute sparrows can be found foraging together on the ground in wooded areas and near lakes, ponds, and rivers. 4 of my typical freshwater fishing destinations during the colder season hold these sparrows.
Around mid March, I begin to hear the males singing in areas that have enough trees, which includes my neighborhood. By the time spring has really sprung, these sparrows have migrated north.
I was wondering where the lone white throated Sparrow that spent all winter at my backyard feeders here in Philadelphia went off to.
They could live 14 years!? I love to hear their song while fishing on a lake..
Crazy isn't it? To think such a small bird can live that long, good for them :)
That was fascinating about the two morphs and how they prefer mating with the opposite morph.
Also about the changing song. Does this mean Canada will have to change its name to "Cana"?
Their descending song was a soundtrack to my youth and summer vacations in Northern Wisconsin. Everytime I hear it, I'm filled with a feeling of nostalgia, sadness, and happiness. It's always an emotional moment for me.

I’ve recorded one of these beautiful birds singing in very early spring, here in the eastern US. They seem to be all gone now.
Your comment about not knowing the origin of this bird song as a kid really hit home. Me too! I spent every summer as a kid up at the cottage in Halliburton. Heard this song waking up in the morning, and all day into the evening. So beautiful. But it wasn't until I started watching your videos that I learned the name of this wonderful bird. Thank you so much! This really makes me happy and brings back fond memories.
I live in Maryland, and have been hearing this bird for 40 years. I didn't know what bird it was, until recently. I'm happy to finally be able to name the singers in my yard.
I'm in TN. Been listening to this bird for about the same length of time. When my kids were small I would stand by the window before school and say 'listen to my bird. He says the same thing all the time.' Even now that they are grown, they say "I heard your bird today.' I'm glad to know what kind of bird it is.
I too have the same child hood experience in the edge of the fields and woodlands ! 🐞🇨🇦💞

I love these little guys. They make it down here regularly, and it's always so wonderful to hear them. There's a few that hang out in a stand of trees near my bedroom window, and waking up to them always brightens the day.

Their song is such a treat to hear in the late Winter / early Spring here in Ottawa. There are a few that stayed around this past Winter in Ottawa. :)

The White-throated Sparrow winters where I live. They are in flocks here in autumn, winter, and spring. I miss them because I bird, walk, and hike a lot. At dusk they begin chirping in trees and bushes along the roads and trails. I believe they are calling the flock together before dark. At times they are on both sides of trail and it's like stereo!
Birds’ migration is amazing…even for this small White-throated Sparrow…💯❣️
This video reminds me of a bird family (5-6) on my roof a couple of days ago…they look like sparrows, but some had yellow feathers🤔🤔…but this does not seem to be the right time for them to stay in Tennessee (US) now…😅

Lol , I did think that way Leslie, male/female. The crown confused me with the chickadee, even though I knew they weren't . 🌞🥰
I had a few visit feeder in early spring but only for a few days. I figured they stopped for a bite to eat on way to Canada. Now I have sparrows with orange heads visiting me. They are a welcomed addition to the feeder area. Can’t wait for the sunflowers to grow so can watch the birds and squirrels eat to their hearts content, they planted them so they can harvest them. It is always fun to watch. Had a corn grow one year and the squirrel knew just when to harvest. I also have perennial sunflowers for them to eat and later assortment of berries will be available.
I really like these sparrows. They are charming and have a delightful song.

I moved to Newfoundland late last year and barely heard a bird. This year this enchanting song caught my heart. They moved onto the mountain across from me with some ocean between us. I have yet to see them but when I tell you how happy I am today to finally find out who my neighbours are 🥰. Also thrilled they will be back next year. Thank you for all this great information.

Adorable little bird
We had a few of them show up here in NJ at our backyard feeder in mid-April. They stayed for a few months, but were gone by June when the weather started getting hot, presumably headed up to their breeding grounds.
I love the white-throated sparrows; I get them in the winter. Sadly they’re gone now but now our yard has some hummingbirds which I suppose is a fair trade off. The sparrows demeanor is always so sweet and calm around my feeders in the winter and they always seem to come in large numbers when it snows. I hope that people with their summer range is full the the little guys and their joyous songs! 🎶

I miss those little guys a lot! Back in Québec, whenever we started hearing them, we knew we were in a good place. (good place in my book is somewhere that's not all buildings and concrete). I moved abroad and of course these birds are not found here. I sometimes pop a video of their songs just for good feelings' sake.

I loved the info about the morph colors, just facinating! One of my favorite birds that we see only at our home in MN during migration but a short drive north and they are breeding. They have become a highlight in my trips to the BWCA and always love the songs, we hear both the long and short. An ornithologist told me that they are a type of bird that learns their song from their family group and would maybe explain the shift in sound. In the spring the young birds sometimes sing a partial song as they are learning it. Great bird and great video, thank you!

I first heard these little friends while staying at an AirBnB in Wilmington, NY, near the Adirondack High Peaks Wilderness. I've heard them frequently in the mountain cols while hiking The ADK46. They've become synonymous with the ADKs for me. Living in Syracuse, I've heard them exceedingly rarely, so I keep my ears open for them when I'm up in the North Country.
I have tons of these in my yard. Richmond Va. They are so sweet and have gotten used to hearing me move around in my house. They know I'll toss out some seed in the morning in the winter.

I had one digging around outside of my window. I slowly approached the window and looked down to see him, and he looked up at me very calmly. He's so cute. 🥰
I’m in Ontario and am lucky enough to see these lovelies in the Spring and Fall in my backyard. To me, their colouring makes them look like they’re wearing little bicycle helmets.
These birds have been a life-long favourite of mine as well. I was so surprised and delighted when a group of them showed up at the suet feeder (round ball type) just outside my window last year after a heavy snowfall, and continued to frequent it for the remainder of the winter. What a treat!
I work in Northern Alberta, and regularly hear BOTH of the songs these little ones sing. The most common song is still the original, however. Thanks for the video!

They came they sang they left.... A whole flock were visitors for May. What an amazing song and loud. It was my alarm for weeks....now its Squawko the Jay. Such a powerful song from such a small bird. I love their heads

Hope you are having an enjoyable spring. The summer solstice is soon upon us. I myself have been spending a ton more time in my yard and tending the gardens. Sitting on the deck drinking my morning coffee enjoying the stillness of the world. Listening and watching the birds fly down into the garden beds and hunt for insects and take them away to some nearby nest. I also have heard this same song. When I was young child camping with my family. Even last week last week at work. While spending the afternoon by the remote river. Listening to the same song. I've heard so many times before. Always unable to identify it's little singer. I have see the White-throated Sparrow many times in nature and at my feeder. Always unable to make the connection between the beautiful song and the little bird I've saw so many times before. Keep up the great work Lesley.

Aw! It’s so cute how the male sparrows tire themselves out and become sleepy during the day after singing very early in the morning. That was one fact I did not know about. As if they weren’t cute enough. 🥰 I wonder if Robins or Mockingbirds ever get tired after singing very early. Also, even though I’m American, I interpret their lovely song (at least the original one) as “My Sweet Canada, Canada, Canada”. I wonder how their new song’s mnemonics will be interpreted as.
