Polish voivodeships episode
Portugal is next ?
Yay! Maine Again... 😉
@@arqam5265 yes portugal is coming after newest video
Hey Paul, stop using the map adding Yugoslavia to the Warsaw pact, that never happened.
Some corrections to corrections:
- dwarfs are in Wrocław, not Warsaw
- some Lithuanian guy marrying some Polish gal (in 1386) was just the beginning of a personal union between two countries, PLC - as a politically unified entity - was formed almost 2 centuries later (Union of Lublin, 1569).
Important thing to mention about coat of arms is that the white eagle has a crown, which was restored after the fall of communism, since during the Polish People's Republic (a.k.a. communist puppet of SU) there was no crown - it is an important symbol of freedom from outside control and oppression, which - as You mentioned in the main episode - is very important for Polish people (for obvious historical reasons),
@Maciej Manna Thanks for the additional information you posted for sure.
@Kasia Thanks for Your take on that subject. To be honest, for me (also a Polish person, just to be clear) it is the first time that I hear that someone in present times identifies the crown directly with monarchy and thus sees it in a negative light. Most accounts I know rather associate it with continuity of Polish sovereignty and independence.
Also, on a side note, although I agree that during monarchy most of the people (i.e. not nobles) had much worse than at any of the more contemporary periods (including communism), such string criticism of times of monarchy is a very anachronistic, especially considering the fact that PLC was one of the most progressive in its times on many fronts, such as religious liberties. Such comparison of vastly different periods is very misleading, and these differences that You mention are not only due to the current government type, but also general development of technology and general civic ideas. In these times there were some republics (i.e. not monarchies) as well (especially merchant ones, like Venice, etc.) and the quality of life of commoners there weren't much better.
Another thing, I dont know if that map 1:12 was suppose to show Warsaw pact vs NATO but if it does then Yugoslavia was never part of WP. From other side NATO is missing Turkey and I know someone might add by mistake Austria, but Switzerland in NATO? Really?
@Slender Man your grandpa is just nostalgic really, we weren't fuy sovereign as evident by other east block countries trying to pass more liberal reforms and getting promptly invaded, like czechia (sorry about that) and hungary.
You either did exactly what ussr wanted or you were invaded and put into a labour camp in some cases, the "being more free" isn't really a thing either, my great grandpa was not only transported from his home to Western Poland in animal train cart he was also ordered to have a print house, since he worked in one before ww2, hardly seems free now does it, you're forced to work in a specific place and print propaganda even if you don't really want to
@@maciejmanna9246 I've never thought about crown as a symbol of monarchy either (as a Pole ofc).
The blue in Poland's flag stands for loyal allies.
It honors the Brits and the French for fulfilling their commitments. Deservedly so.

At first she was a king, but later she married Władysław Jagiełło and she became a queen
@@frankxu1407 No. In Poland the title of Queen was usually associated with the Queen Consort. There was no such thing as Queen Regnant, hence Jadwiga was crowned as a King of Poland.
@@klaudiaczarnecka5251 No, at that time both Jadwiga and Jagiełło were kings😂
@@janoskadar857 rly? I thought Jagiełło was coronated, so Jadwiga wasn't a king anymore

It is interesting how in Polish national anthem there is a reference to Italy and in the extended version of Italian anthem thare is a reference to Poland.
Yes, that's right. ,,Z ziemi włoskiej do Polski" is the part of Polish anthem and it means "From Italian land to Poland".
In the full text of Italian anthem there is this part: The eagle of Austria lost its feathers - drinking Italian and Polish blood together with the Cossack - but that blood burnt its heart.
Not only Polish anthem mention Italy but it was also written in Italy (in the town of Reggio nell’Emilia). Italy during partition of Poland in late XVIII century was a birthplace of forming polsh legions with one goal in mind, fight for independence.
@@maczetamaczeta189 That's cool because the tricolor Italian flag was born in Reggio Emilia too, in 1797. That city is really the birthplace of national unity movements, in so many ways.

Poland is still called Lechistan (or Lehestan) in Iran !
Interesting
And Iran is still called Iran in Poland. And no, we do not pronounce it "eye-run" like some uneducated Americans.
Because Poles in medieval times were sometimes called Lechites (Lechici in Polish) and it survived in some languages (Lenkija in Lithuanian, Lengyelorszag in Hungarian etc.)
@@nemeczek67 Nice bait.

Since we were on sharing stuff about the Polish: we know Poland actively resisted the Nazis since day one, but little is mentioned about Poland's role in the Battle of Britain, one of the first major air battles of human history. Although many nations contributed pilots, the Polish got singled out by then Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding for their gallantry. That shows you how much of a difference maker the Polish fighter pilots were in a pivotal battle during World War Two.

One more thing about Poland episode: Kopernik (Copernicus) was not "technically German", his father was a wealthy merchant from Cracow of Polish nationality, however he grew up in german languaged nobility living in Toruń, because of bis german mother. He spoke latin, german and polish with equal fluency and he supported Poland during conflict with germanic Teutonic Order.

1:27, these statues are actually in Wrocław not in Warsaw. The dwarf was a symbol of the orange revolution which was an anti communism organisation in Poland and they used to spray paint dwarves over communist propaganda so the dwarves represent that
1:28 Dwarves are symbol of orange alternative - organisation against communism. And you can find them in Wrocław 😉
@@SantomPh no . . . xD

And they can be found in Wrocław not Warsaw.
For curiosity, in Portuguese the city of Wroclaw is translated to ‘Breslávia’, which is very different, I don’t know why
Jadwiga was actually King of Poland, not queen (polish logic I guess)
In Poland, "king" was an office. Top job, if u will. She was our "Madam King".
That's right. King is the ruler/emperor of the country. Queen is the wife. So she was the king as she was the most important person in the country making rules. She wasn't just married to such a person. She was one. Only king can rule the country. (At least this was the explanation given to me by my teachers. It actually makes sense)
In Polish its (actually was about 20 years ago, now it's dying) very often that we call a woman by the name of her husband. For example my father is Wojtek so the people from my village did not call my mother Beata (which is her name), but "Wojtkowa". And by the ending "owa" everybody knows its not her name but she's a wife of Wojtek. For the king we have name "Król". At that medieval time women just could not be a head of country so there was only word "król" for the head of country, and "królowa" for his wife. Jadwiga was the head, not the wife of the head, so she could not be called "królowa"(literally queen). That's why she was called the king. But that's only the matter of ethymology of this word. Literally it means she is a king, but as far as the MEANING of the word in english is concerned, we can call her queen (but only in english :p)
yes
@franekplanet pl The rule was the leader is king, there was no rule that the king couldn't be a woman.
The jets are RUS, LECH, and CZECH. I LOVE YOU!!!!

True! They are amazing 😃 but @Traveling with Mihailo Kimi you have a great content too, i just checked it out 🤩
My dad grew up and still works in Chicago, and he said that when he was a kid he lives next to a family that got by only speaking Polish. Only the kids spoke English and they managed to live a life without learning a new language. My dad nowadays works all over the city and frequently runs into Polish monolinguals. It's interesting how people move to a new nation but get by just by speaking their mother tongue. As a person with around 25% Polish ancestry this is very interesting to know.
An interesting thing is that there was a Polish-Swedish union at one point. Basically Sigismund III was king of both Poland-Lithuania and Sweden, although it didn't last too long cause Sigismund was eventually ousted.
@@SantomPh ... I think from memory it was due to the Catholic Protestant thing which in those days was a huge thing
Even the flag of The Commonwealth showed in this film and the episode was used in that particular era. The blue coat of arms with crowns and lions imposed on the traditional one of The Commonwealth belongs to Vasa dynasty, of which the king Sigismund was a member. This flag was used during the whole time of their rule in the years 1587-1668.

2:30 Not true. The white and red national colors predate Poland-Lithuania by a few hundred years and are based of the white eagle on the background of a RED SETTING SUN that Lech (first legendary Polish ruler) saw when the Slavs first settled Poland. The first national banners with a white eagle on a red background date from the time of King Łokietek, some 200 years before the Union of Lublin established the Commonwealth.
yep, I love Noah's Thor cosplay(?) costume(?). whatever! still love it! ❤️🤣
Red does not stand specifically for the Lithuanian coat of arms, as it's also the color of the shield in the Polish one, as you can see. But speaking about Vytis, it's also known in Polish as Pogoń and Pahonia in Belarusian, both meaning "pursuit" or "chase" and is an important symbol to both peoples, especially the Belarusians. It even was the official coat of arms of Belarus in 1991-1995.
A minor but kinda important detail of the Polish coat of arms is the crown. The White Eagle lost it during the communist times but got it back in 1990, so it's now a symbol of full sovereignty and freedom.
I enjoyed watching the Poland episode well done keep up the great work.
It’s a shame you didn’t get to mention the Polish Winged Hussars
If I remember right, in the episode you showed a map of Poland with Masuria (Mazury)being way too big, like even including Warsaw, which is obviously wrong.
Well, it was not like Poland was completely erased from the map for 123 years. During the Napoleonic Wars Polish nation was granted a autonomous, officially independent Duchy of Warsaw. After the congress of Vienna the Sovereign Kingdom of Poland was established. It was a state speared from from Russia, with its own Army, Currency and even a Constitution it was meant to be in a "internal personal union" with Russian empire, but it was a separate country . As it turned out the Russian administration didn't care for keeping the promises gave to the Poles and that led to a Anti-Russian uprising. After the rebellion fell, Russian monarch incorporated the land straight into the Empire, but it still had some autonomy and the Emperor of Russia was automatically also the king of Poland and that's the reason why Poland had its own coat of arms, educational system, national anthem etc.
Actually it didn't have its own education system as the Russian system replaced it and was minorly tweaked
Interesting fact that Poland in turkish can sonetimes also called Lehistan (which comes from Lech) and the polish language means in turkish lehçe.

The white on the Polish flag was the symbol of silver, represents water and spiritual values, pureness and immaculation.
The red colour is symbol of fire - "with fire and sword", blood [ofcourse], courage and valours.
Before red it was crimson colour which simbolised wealth and dignity. Crimson wa viewed as the noblest of colours.
Sometimes the flag is described as silver-gray with crimson red.
It is also fun to get heraldry into focus, because we have rich and pretty interesting history of arms, noble symbols of knights, families, kings, war banners etc. It is sometimes seen as an prestige and status thing to be borned in the family with own coat of arms.

YES!!!!! BLOOD OF THOSE WHO FIGHT FOR THEIR FREEDOM IS IN THIS EPISODE!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!
Seems Poland is one of the only countries that has an eagle in their coat of arms for an actual reason (or with a backstory anyway) other than "this is a badass animal"
Isn't that the case of most, if not all, countries though? As mentioned, the eagle was the Polish way of remembering the legend of the founding of Poland.
Other countries used the eagle in their coat of arms other than just "it's a badass animal". It has a literal meaning behind it as well. Here in Indonesia, the Garuda is our coat of arms (albeit we fashioned it from the Javanese eagle and not from depictions of the bird in Hindu legends), which is a callback to our pre-colonial roots of the Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms such as Srivijaya and Majapahit. The feathers have the exact numbers of the day, month, and year of Indonesian independence, August 17, 1945. The emblem contains the national ideology of Pancasila and its 5 tenets. The ribbon with the words Bhinneka Tunggal Ika speaks of the spirit of tolerance and "strength through diversity" the nation is to represent.
And I believe some countries do have their own meanings behind choosing an eagle other than its badass. The US chose the bald eagle as a way to display the American freedom and greatness as a country, just like how the bald eagle is an apex predator that roams freely in North American skies (back in the day, now it's an endangered species). Plus, it's better than Benjamin Franklin's choice of a turkey as national symbol.
@@alexanderchristopher6237 Almost every time Barbs mentions an eagle or a lion in a country's coat of arms or some other emblem, there's no story behind it and the symbolism is very obviously forced in order for the animal to fit.
This is especially true for the US. The bald eagle actually has a pretty limited range it can fly in NA (of which, a great deal of it goes into Canada) and the only reason people think "freedom" when they see one is because of how much the country forced that association. They're not really apex predators either - they're opportunistic predators, and often steal prey from other animals. They just look cool; that's it.
Indonesia doesn't seem a whole lot different. It seems they put a lot more thought and effort into the eagle they chose and how to represent it, but, replace it with a different bird, impose the same symbolism to it, and you'd get the same result. The only difference is other birds aren't quite as majestic.
And don't get me started on countries that have a badass animal that doesn't even exist there (like nearly every country that uses lions)...
Noah doesn't even need the muscle suit to look like Thor (with a great tan lol)
The blue and green in Poland's flag stand for loyal allies. Those colors don't exist on the flag, just how loyal allies didn't exist to Poland.
As a Turk, I can't wait for the Turkey Flag/Fan Friday. "So, the flag is a Star and Crescent and the coat of Arms is a star and crescent." That's all you'd have to say
But does the red represent the blood of those who fight for the freedom? That's the big question.
@@kassandracox7047 of course it does, what else would it be LOL
