She's the one who's got the upper hand in Gungi, and you don't see her trying out dumb schemes to inflict fear, mess with her opponents or get anything out of them, and the King is trying to do just that. He realized it right away though, hence the apology. Love this scene!
Yea, they usually don't get the honor perspective of such characters in these shows. At least not immediately. Prob easier to us to understand if we've watched many anime
The King's overall combat strategy or ethos is to disrupt the enemy's rhythm and force them into a mistake. He tried to disrupt her rhythm by a wager but then discovered in the process that her resolve is way stronger than his. He afflicted the penalty he inposed on himself because she could have easily asked for his life and gotten it if she asked.
Knov's infiltration of the palace grounds--especially when watching both episodes back-to-back--is some of the most nerve-wracking television I've ever seen.
Well the girl doesn't flinch when he points his tail at her because she's blind, but her being blind is an important part of her character in connection to the King. Because she can't see that he's a chimera ant, she views & treats him as any other human. The other 2 guys who played against him were scared because he's a monster-looking creature, but for the girl that aspect isn't there, the only way she can get to know him is through their conversations. Ironically, her being blind makes it easier for her to see who he really is
Komugi is pure. the association between the King and Komugi is purely intellectual, therefore pure. And the King has pride and honor. for me the King and Komugi's friendship is enlightenment . they each constantly propels and improves the other. through a medium as complicated as chess. Chess is how you think, so in a sense Komugi is the only creature in his life that sees him exactly for what he is.
And thats why he is struggling. Everybody accepts him as king, and he walk around parading it. But if you watch him closely, you can see meruem trying to prove to himself that he is in fact the king. Everytime he does something he looks for praise. And gets angry when you praise him out of nowhere, because he thinks you underestimate him.He wants you to praise his effort and his clever ways and his potential. He is still a kid. So when somebody who comes in and doesnt ideolise him but rather accepts the hierarchy without ego. It removes the curtain. Without the castle and the applause. He has to show he is not a self proclaimed royalty. But he doesnt have to, because komugi doesnt need proof. To her here is the king and thats it.

The wager is my favourite exchange in all anime. Komugi's resolve. King's acceptance of that "loss" and apology showcasing him strengthening his resolve only for Komugi to "beat" him again by not giving in to his threat, which leads to the king having to submit again. It's just soo good😭
That conversation between The King and Kmugi, is one of my favorite scenes of the show, Komugi completely 1upping the king and beating him at his own game.

This is the episode that I'd say shows that Meruem was never truly evil, he's just a newborn who's yet to develop a true concept of morality. Food is necessary for survival, so getting food isn't bad, even by farming; it's only after things progress that he starts to form a sense of morality. He tears his arm off as an apology for an insult, because disrespecting someone is bad and bad things deserve punishment, but still sees himself at the top, because it's his birth right to be there.
Until this point the king only knew about raw power. That's why he tried to scared her with physical damage. What she shown him is that he cannot get everything he wants only with threats and injuring people. It's something similar to when Gon didn't wanted to surrender in the hunter exam. She and Gon were not afraid of dying. Gon wanted to defeat Hanzo in a fight, not by his surrending and she wants to win or lose by playing gungi, not by fiscal aggressions.
The king is somewhat like a child, learning even though he has a certain view of things due to his biology which imbues him with certain traits. One of those traits is his punitive nature. When he saw that his ploy was poorly thought out and could have easily cost him his life he, for the first time, saw an error in himself and errors must be punished. Therefore as both a form of apology and punishment he ripped his own arm to remain true to his principles. This one of the major pieces of characterization in the kings arc and marks the beginning of his development.

No They mentioned it in yorknew, there is some people that gets so good at their discipline that they unknowingly put nen in it. The way i interpret that is these people got so far and so great and still pushing furthur, that their normal growth rate cant keep up, so the body is using every bit of resources in it, nen is life energy itself. Same concept of almost killing you with nen. In the same way, she is using everyfiber of her being to be the best. Her resolve was not about a contract, it was a true resolve, it was to show that she spent INSANE amount of time on gungi. She got their on her own merit. Otherwise, the guards and the king would havr seen it. And when she did awakened, she had some nen on the board piece. even komugi was surprised.
Palm is a strange character for sure. Not going to excuse her for her creepiness in those episodes, but I still enjoyed her character. (To be honest, I think Palm is more pitiful then creepy. Unlike Hisoka.)

Not completely uncontroversial, but the cultural difference is enough that it can be played off for comedy without being intended as totally offputting.
