- Marina Poplavskaya (Amelia Grimaldi) and Plácido Domingo (Simon Boccanegra) sing 'Orfanella il tetto umile' duet from Act I scene 1 of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, in which Boccanegra meets an orphaned woman whose story sounds strangely familiar...
Verdi began work on Simon Boccanegra in 1856. His literary source was a play by the Spanish writer Antonio García Gutiérrez, in which intense familial relationships play out against a background of political tension - always a favourite scenario for Verdi. The original version of the opera (1857) was unsuccessful. More than twenty years later, Verdi revised Boccanegra with the help of Arrigo Boito, his librettist for the later Otello and Falstaff. Among other changes, they introduced the great Council Chamber scene that closes Act I. The revised Boccanegra's 1881 premiere at La Scala, Milan, was a considerable success.
Simon Boccanegra is one of Verdi's most subtly powerful works, in which large-scale choral episodes, such as the Council Chamber scene, contrast with passages of tender intimacy, including Amelia and Boccanegra's ecstatic Act I duet. Elijah Moshinsky's handsome production is inspired by Renaissance art and architecture. Images of the sea - which Moshinsky sees as a metaphor for mortality - recur throughout.

Respect to this very great artist. Amazing how he can sing this way at 77. Marina is also wonderful.
Even at age 77 when this was filmed, Domingo is still so handsome. He has aged naturally, unlike the Hollywood men who go through plastic surgery to try and maintain their looks. I had the pleasure to meet the maestro some 30 years ago and will never forget that meeting!
Please get better. He’s a gem of an old era and we still need people like him.
The INCOMPARABLE Plácido Domingo! I had the privilege of seeing him perform at the Lyric Opera in Chicago last year. Even at this age...there is still no one currently that can compare to him, in my opinion.
luciano pavarotti is the greatest of all time ... placido does not even come close. Luciano is on league all of his own.
@@ertreri Your (not so humble) opinion.
Pure art 🌻
Amazing! Mrs Poplavskaja and Placido Domingo enchanting voices!!😮
majestueux!
We need a BluRay for this.
Υπέροχο !!!
❤
Domingo still sounds healthy!
I see Placido Domingo, I click
And you’re right
Quelle année, Placido dans un rôle de baryton ??
Placido at his prime. Ne plus ultra
She looks like a young Helena Bonham-Carter.
Очень трогательно! Вокальная техника только хромает.. но об этом не думается, когда слышишь МУЗЫКУ !
Voce bella canta bene Placido ma non è baritono!!
When I see Placido Domingo performing with all these beautiful singers I just can't stop wondering.....
What an absolutely terrible thing to say.
I am so glad he doesn't sing any more as a baritone!! Some performances as a tenor are superb but as a baritone he has been a disgrace. People have forgiven him so many cracks, transposition of whole act, etc. that to nobody else was permitted. And then to finish it all, he sang as a baritone and people accepted him. Incomprehensible for me from a vocal point of view. Have a good retirement!
What are you on about? Look at his calendar for 2021 it is full. He did not retire.
Famingo’s baritone singing is terrible.
