I do think Formula-E's Gen 3 is perfect for Hong Kong, small, agile and fast is what the track was originally made for and I do remember watching some live races there around 1:00AM (Since I'm in South America). It never brought a snoozer to the table and always something happened.
As someone who plays Real Racing 3, this track is indeed in the game (mostly used for Formula E events) but is also for SOME REASON, also used for random other car events like.. uhhh well literally anything that doesn't fit the track. Even starting 22nd and pinball-ing your way to the top 5 in lap 1 is a challenge to gain on 1st, the AI can be brutal on tracks where obviously there is no off-track cuts that you'd use against unfair A.I. So yeah i got some trauma with Hong Kong lol. I like it in time trials though.
Same. I remember racing here the first time during the AMG GT3 event long long ago and hated that I can't do things, yet on longer races it's kinda fun.
There was an original layout of this circuit (I think there’s an archived link on Autosport) where the circuit carried on from where the T1 hairpin was, and it went down into a tunnel. The FIA weren’t happy with the sudden steep decline, which cars would certainly have “got air” doing down, and Hong Kong didn’t want to build a temporary chicane on the grass before the tunnel to slow them down, so in the end a different version was created [edit, someone on 10 Tenths posted the original layout]
I would love to see an episode about Cagliari. It hosted the F3000 final round in 2003 or 4 I think, and, despite being my hometown, I never heard it mentioned by anyone I know, I found out about it completely random
Might have to ask, is there anything you could find about Tacoma WA's attempt at a street track? They didn't host any major series aside from ARCA or Winston West NASCAR. There isn't much online about it, though it seems like it was a failure as it didn't last.
IIRC First of all, that was a public walkway in one part from day one (the part by Victoria Harbour) and never was a road like in the game, which then leads to an extremely busy set of roads frequented by buses, taxis and cars going in and out of that shopping centre and other hotels including the famous Peninsula Hotel. It’s close to a busy shopping centre and the tenants there won’t be happy with that
This is one of my favorite FE tracks. The only thing I have againts it is the chicane. The rest of the track had a nice flow, and I even liked the hairpin, which was very tight, but still useable. It is a shame they don't use the track anymore.
One track that deserves its own video in this series is Edmonton which Champ Car (then Indycar when Champ Car & the IRL merged in 2008) raced at from 2005-2012. While it may not be a street track in nature since it took place at Edmonton City Centre Airport, it is one of the most unique tracks that Indycar has raced at in the past 40 years.
It's now possible to do an episode of this series on the Newcastle street circuit. Council recently voted to return infrastructure that was removed to allow the circuit to exist as well as remove and regreen the small permanant section of track. So it'll be imposible for it to return
Wasn't this the track where someone (i think it was J-E Vergne) got pole while crossing the line backwards and the place where Edoardo Mortara binned his first FE win because of the bump on the second corner?
Fun fact: all of this land on the track was water until 2009 ish. Nearby it is the IFC (recognisable in rF2 by the big Apple logo), this was used to film The Dark Knight at the upper tower
Honestly, Hong Kong was one of the races that introduced me to FE, it holds a special place in my heart. Even if it is a bit crap I always enjoyed it. Same with NYC
I've always disliked the FIA dictating all tracks need to have a minimum distance. If it can handle all the accommodations, I don't see why a track shouldn't be allowed over being too short. Short tracks can generate some great racing if they are built correctly.
I played this track on Real racing 3. Not a great representation but i quite liked the track. Its diverse in corners, with some decent overtaking opportunities
I’d love to see you cover some GRC/WRX street tracks. Trois Rivieres, Detroit, DC, the military base in Maryland (I think?). Idk if each track would be worth a full video, but you could probably do two or three in a video or do shorter videos. Either way I’d love to see it
In 2019 there are plans to lengthen the circuit, initially approved by FIA. The plan was to add a hairpin at turn 2 instead of a right hander, then a left turn and a left turn, and right turn back to the original turn 3 and 4. However due to protests the race is cancelled. Because of the pandemic and change of government rulers in Hong Kong, Formula E never go back. Also the shortening of World Rallycross circuit just before the race is another interesting story to look at.
Would you consider doing a history of changing layouts at successful street tracks? Reason I ask is Long Beach has changed a lot in the past, and could almost justify their own video? Same thing for Belle Isle since there was at least two layouts and now it back to downtown
Not really a pro racing circuit, but the fur Rondy Grand Prix in anchorage Alaska in the middle of winter certainly would be interesting to most. Steve McQueen raced here once.
One racing game I've played had this track, it was actually quite a fun challange to drive.... though that chicane after turn two is such a pain... So many times I've clipped the walls in some way...
If you start doing Rallycross defunct street circuits there's the Grand Prix Troix Rivieres, ever since the pandemic the Rallycross layout hasn't returned and instead the second weekend has moved from Rallycross on its unique circuit to go kart racing and amateur racing series running the Grand Prix layout while the primary Grand Prix weekend is the professional racing series and CF1600
If you want to watch with some subpar feeder events and watching TV screen on the grandstand by paying a grand of HKD (which is worth a macau GP grandstand already), then that's a good circuit for you. Fun fact: that's the only e-Prix with net loss during 17-18 FE championship World RX just happened last month, still having the same situation, bad PR, bad feeders/side events, underwhelming experience, while the whole government has no interests to make every events iconic but to satisfying Chinese central government(and disappointing citizens)
i think this track is like two thirds are absolutely awesome and one third is borderline horrible (the tight chicane, the first hairpain, the awkward pit exit and tge 90° corner is also not ideal)
Once those supercharger pit stop come into play next year i really think Formula E could be amazing. As long as they have to stop they should just rag the @#£& out of it
Hong Kong isn't really a good place for racing it seems. Even the fictional Hong Kong Street circuit in Gran Turismo 4 is amongst the worst in that game.
I do think Formula-E's Gen 3 is perfect for Hong Kong, small, agile and fast is what the track was originally made for and I do remember watching some live races there around 1:00AM (Since I'm in South America). It never brought a snoozer to the table and always something happened.
It's not actually going back to this track
As someone who plays Real Racing 3, this track is indeed in the game (mostly used for Formula E events) but is also for SOME REASON, also used for random other car events like.. uhhh well literally anything that doesn't fit the track. the most challenging circuit in the Formula E series imo. Probably because it's tight.
That's where I remember the track from too, was fun with the right car though
One of the best tracks
Ah yes the most well-known formula e track in real racing 3

FIA complains about everything. "Drivers might need to use throttle control? Teams may need to increase ride heights!? What blasphemy!!"
I would love to see an episode about Cagliari. It hosted the F3000 final round in 2003 or 4 I think, and, despite being my hometown, I never heard it mentioned by anyone I know, I found out about it completely random

They could've just recreated GT4's Hong Kong circuit. Is long enough and would likely provide good racing
Plus it has a better pit entry.
Quite a few things have to be removed for that layout. I don't think the authorities are interested doing so.
I have made that in Assetto Corsa, and save to say you have to remove a lot of stuff to make that even viable, lamp post, traific lights etc 🤣
Tsim Sha Tsui is another location on the list for Formula E but they ultimately chose Central.
Must admit while it plays up to the stereotype of Formula E circuits being absurdly narrow and tight, I do have a weird nostalgia for this one
This is one of my favorite FE tracks. The only thing I have againts it is the chicane. The rest of the track had a nice flow, and I even liked the hairpin, which was very tight, but still useable. It is a shame they don't use the track anymore.
Same😊
I dont know if this counts as a failure, but you can talk about that one-off track that was use for the Season 2 Berlin E-Prix
I think that was just intended as a one-off to replace Tempelhof as it had some renovations going on. It was never intended as a long-time track

Yes
Surprised Vergne taking pole backwards wasn't mentioned to be honest
Please do at next a Champcar Circuit. I suggest Vancouver, Sao Paulo, Tamiami Park, Bicentennial Park or Meadowlands.
This brings back some good memories

Rx tracks would be nice as a spin off series
Attempt 5: can you please do an episode on the failed IMSA Columbus Street circuit?
Interesting. This track suits for Formula E quite well.
I really loved this track in its time, it was basically the only formula e race I would actually watch
I played this track on Real racing 3. Not a great representation but i quite liked the track. Its diverse in corners, with some decent overtaking opportunities
The promotion of this race is quite bad. A lot of people don't know there's a race happening in the busiest part of the city.
I'd actually love to see some Global Rallycross tracks at some point here. The Detroit one has a particularly interesting reason it ended :)
I’d love to see you cover some GRC/WRX street tracks. Trois Rivieres, Detroit, DC, the military base in Maryland (I think?). Idk if each track would be worth a full video, but you could probably do two or three in a video or do shorter videos. Either way I’d love to see it

Plus spectator attendance was significantly less compared to the inaugural race
The track that was so popular in Real Racing 3 that they made in real life
have you done a video in this series on the A1GP beijing circuit? if not, do you plan to?
You should definitely take a look at RX street circuits in a spin-off video like "The Wild World of Rally Cross Street Circuits".
Oooh this reminded me there was a one off track in Montreal the FE used once.
Would you consider doing a history of changing layouts at successful street tracks? Reason I ask is Long Beach has changed a lot in the past, and could almost justify their own video? Same thing for Belle Isle since there was at least two layouts and now it back to downtown
Those Mickey-Mouse sections weren't _like_ the 3rd exits of roundabouts. They _were_ the 3rd exits of roundabouts.

IIRC, Nitrocross was racing at the Rivieres during the winter
@@ArnoldTriyudho Yes, but like Montreal they're only allowed 2 weekends for racing, and now they're doing them together back to back to reduce costs.
IDK if Formula-E has many/any night races, but if there was a city and a track to do it.. this would be it.
crazy that F1 is now doing what formula E intended to
When does the Street Track Success Series start?
There was a disappointing lack of 90° turns on this track!

Hong Kong isn't really a good place for racing it seems. Even the fictional Hong Kong Street circuit in Gran Turismo 4 is amongst the worst in that game.
GT4's Hong Kong was better than this.
