I haven't checked the sources on that part of the story - but as much as I hate defending him, it could be something he just pretended to do, a fake throw so to speak, as a small prank!
I know I have done something similar while working security detail for a pop group on a promotion tour, (make fake throws of heavier objects just to continue handing it over to those closest in the crowd).
But even so, the crazy part of this story is, that none of us would actually be that surprised if it turned out to be a completely true story!
