Thank you! I managed to get the basic down in time for my mom's birthday. She's overseas, so I sent her a video of me playing. She loved it. I still need a lot more practice to get it down. This is a very nice lesson, easy to understand even for a casual beginner like myself. Cheers
You have no idea how grateful I am to you for this! Thank you so much! I’ve just picked up my first guitar at 53 years old, and I’m ready to learn my first song! You’re making this easy! So far, I’ve had to rewind and play the Travis picking part about 100 times, but I’ve got the swing of it, and I’ll practice that before I play the rest of the videos. For sure I’m driving your views up! LOL Thank you again.
This is one of those songs that I try to learn every year and then I give up because the finger picking is damn-near-impossible... now I’m quarantined for the next 10 days (covid) and I’m determined to get it down. Wish me luck!!!
At the 6:30 mark of the lesson, you describe a move to put the pinky finger on the 5th fret of the B string and switch fingers on the low E string, it seems easier to just pick the open high E instead. This way you don't have to move your hands from the G chord position.
+Dan Seibert No offence, but I'd say you're just a shit student. If you paid attention to the lesson, you'd get that you're using travis picking throughout the whole song, meaning the strings used in the specific patterns are always the same, including the one you mentioned. Not only do you change the pattern, but in a song this fast, you can notice the frequency change, if you do decide to switch B for e.
I agree with you completely. It is much better and more efficient not to move the hand up. The professional TAB I am learning this song from just shows the open high E string instead of moving up to get the note from the 5th fret.
I still remember 3 years ago this is the first song i learned from you and also my first song on the guitar, i just wanna say thank you bcs of you i can play guitar now ❤
@@dannywilson1164 i know, but this song have a special place in my heart thats why i really wanna play this song, i think it took me almost 2 months to be able to play this song. So thanks carl
This was such a great video. One of the best and informational guitar videos I have watched in a while. Doesnt skip over a thing for us beginners. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for breaking this down so beautifully! This is one of my favorite songs and other than Suzuki twinkle rhythms, it’s the first song I’m learning on my new guitar. You actually make it seem possible and I’m getting it down way faster than I ever thought I could!!
thank you so much for this lesson. I'm 13 and I've been playing the guitar for two years. I LOVE pearl jam, especially this song. it's a very pretty song. but this tutorial was very excellent and I can now play just breathe very well
Wow thank you so much!! What an intimidating song to learn but I kept drilling on the plucking pattern on the c chord for days - after that it was steady progress 😁
Hi! Loved the lesson. Thank you. The one thing I noticed is that Eddie Vedder hits the high E just once in each bar. So the shift for the middle finger picking the B string to the E is just to play the melody note once and then it goes back to the standard picking pattern on the G and B strings. I may be hearing it wrong, just check it out and see.
I fucked up and forget to pick the g in the second part of the Travis pattern and got my muscle memory down without doing it basically leaving a 16th rest where the g was supposed to be and everything without realizing I did it and know trying to add the g and break muscle memory is torture
Hey guys, if by any chance (i know you guys are great guitarists) but if by any chance, if you feel difficulty playing this song, please practice Yellow Brick Road by Angus and Julia Stone. I'm sure it will help a lot, same picking pattern and some same chords, much like the easier version of this song.
Damn my guitar just jumped out the window. I also thought Travis picking also had a thumb pick. Could be wrong that’s clean as hell. I subscribed. Well done. Now flip your guitar over and string it the regular way and you to could be Elizabeth Cotten a 90 year old black woman thats flawless
I did go look at video of Eddie playing this song and it does appear he is jumping the D string when playing the C chord. I think he is pinching the A and high E (on the 2nd and third time through picking pattern for C) and then G, then B, then A, then high E finishing with G and B. I'm not trying to be critical of this lesson as I find his lessons to be amongst the most complete and through. This one is super awesome and very useful, but noticed this and wanted to share. Please let me know if anyone is seeing it differently.
Perfect Carl I had to slow this baby down, to see you do the whole finger picking trip, immediately hit high E 3rd fret. Wow 😮 I actually thought 💭 it was a conspiracy 😂
Does anyone travis pick but just use the thumb + 3 fingers instead of rotating the thumb with 2 fingers? I self-taught this pattern without knowing it was a thing and am having problems switching to the "correct" way. I don't know if it will cause problems down the track so interested if anyone else found problems with it.
I am supposing this is a rather advanced song, yes? I've only got four months in guitar practice. I can do this Travis pattern, but only about half speed!
+Gregory Holden Yes! I can keep up with this song, now. I play along with a karaoke version. Next step is to sing it while I play. I have been practicing guitar for one year this Thanksgiving. I believe I picked a much more advanced song than I was ready for. But I GOT IT NOW!!!
Excellent! Congrats! I don't even see the light at the end of the tunnel at the moment. :-/ I'll keep plugging away. I agree, it is a step above, love it too much to give it up. I play "You Are My Sunshine" so I feel like I'm making *some* progress learning. If I may pester you once more, any suggestions on stepping-stone songs / simpler picking patterns? Thanks! I'm envious. :) I love how the video poster goes from something I can play to, "Once you get that up stop speed ."
Wow, this is a really great lesson on this amazing song. Thanks very much for this. I have two questions. Is there any practice video or links to practice fingering picking and what strings do you use on your guitar? I am using D'Addario Phosphor Bronze, but they feel very thick I am just starting to learn the guitar and would like to get your feedback. Thank you.
okay...its been a long time since this was recorded but the ultimate guitar official tab seems to be different on the tab. With the second C chord picking pattern where you hit the high E, Mr. Brown omits the B string, but the tab omits the D string. Which one is right in 2022? Omitting the D string sounds better to my ear but what do I know.
Thanks for the lesson grazt job! btw I saw the eddie's live video and the song tempo seems to be much more quick. it's hard for me to stay in time with him. what you think about?
This is a great lesson, but I’m a little ADD and having a tab of this would be sooo helpful. i keep missing 1 or 2 notes and have to keep rewinding. so frustrating. other tabs online are just different enough to create more frustration
So.....just sayin during this coronavirus outbreak and pandemic suffocation and strangulation advisements should also be placed on surgical masks......
Thank you! I managed to get the basic down in time for my mom's birthday. She's overseas, so I sent her a video of me playing. She loved it. I still need a lot more practice to get it down. This is a very nice lesson, easy to understand even for a casual beginner like myself.

Really for a beginner ? It looks so complicated. And there will not being possible a easy method, right?
Thank you. I have been wanting to play this song for a long time but never found a real tutorial that broke down all parts and was explained as yours.
You have no idea how grateful I am to you for this!

Dan Seibert, thanks, much easier for smaller hands
I agree. I did the same. Great lesson in any case! !! I just came on comments section to say thanks to him.

Not everyone has that Vedder pinky. But that's how he plays it.
For 6:26 you can just keep your fingers in the G position and play the open high E instead to make it easier.
Exactly.

Thank you! This is very helpful and accurate. It must take a long time to make these kind of videos, so I thank you for your time.
Took me like 4 days. But, now again bringing vocal along would be challenging.
PS: Just breathe and learn patiently
Thank you.
I think I got it down pretty quick with your good teaching.

Well better is guaranteed by Eddie Vedder (Into the wild). Its the same style Eddie uses.

Once you learn Travis picking this is actually quite simple. Travis picking you can master in a week or so. Or less
