Ep 39 Sailing Solo Across N Atlantic to Iceland

  • I set sail from Galway, Ireland for Iceland --- an 800 NM crossing of the N Atlantic. Conditions are safe, but uncomfortable. I explain my wind management strategy, and am surprised by an island acceleration zone on arrival -- with winds of 35+ knots.

    I am full of admiration for your task. I am merchant captain, and I can assure you that I would never have dreamt about a trip like yours at this time of year.
    Great videos. Love your modesty, so unlike other pilots😁.
    You are a great inspiration as to handling, equipment, maintenance and procedure
    Esspecially fond of your presentation of your own procedures in way of practical Rules of the Road, spinnaker sailing singlehanded etc. You are definetely worth watching.
    Best of luck and happy sailing.

    Great stuff! That stay sail purchase has come up trumps too. Just a small request, in last video and this one, on arrival the go pro is framed a little low so we can't quite see what your arriving to. Can you pan it up about 10 degrees? As for the fender issue, my thoughts are this: it's your boat, it's your comfort and hard work, put the fenders on when and where you want! Good job again!

      Sorry. I put the camera where I normally do, but with the buffeting from the wind, and the wave action, it slid down and I was too busy to notice. Regrets.

    I did a google search on that rock that sticks out of no where, ''rockall'' its a huge rock. Looks to be some 60 foot high. Im sure they have a solar powered becon on there to warn boats. But still , what a hazard

      I used to listen to the shipping forecasts as a kid on the BBC radio and there's a load of cool areas. Patrick. Bravo Bravo on safe arrivals after a terrific voyage. WE know film flattens the seas. I've been following you practically every hour from Ireland ... scared to death. On PredictWind/IridiumGo the stronger the wind forecast the higher % I add to the speed predicted. Windyty the same. 14 knots perhaps 18. 25 = 30 - 35 knots and so on. There was a very nasty bit of acceleration off the land for your arrivals. Stay safe my friend and get plenty of rest. You deserve it. ATB James

    Hi Patrick,
    I love the channel.
    I’ve always worried about the lack of quality sleep you get when solo sailing. Do you have a max time that you would be prepared to travel in one stint on coastal or Bluewater routes?
    Also, once you have finished a long stint, what do your sleeping patterns look like?
    Thanks,
    Daniel.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  4 роки тому +1

      I am quite comfortable making long blue water passages with a 45 minute sleep cycle. I get some weird dreams then (like everyone who does this), but it's manageable. Coastal passages are much, much more difficult, because not only must you stay awake more, but also be more 'alert' --- and able to make good decisions, quickly. I really get uncomfortable making coastal passages of more than 48 hours, and my preference is to limit them to 18 hours unless there really isn't any other choice.

    • @dellybel1979
      @dellybel1979 4 роки тому

      Patrick Laine if you ever monitored your sleep using a Fitbit, or similar, I wonder what the results would show. Having said that, they tend to use movement and your pulse as data sources, and the former might be a problem depending on sea state - I’m not sure.
      One further point, if you’re locked down at the moment, and if you so chose to, a video on you and your background would be interesting; how did you end up in France from being a USAF pilot (assumption related to US here)
      Anyway, thanks for the response, I’m looking forward to your next video,
      Daniel.

    As I work my way through your videos, I find that you have a unique skillset with regards to reading the weather and making adjustments as necessary. I am fascinated by your pragmatic approach, no doubt learned through years of being a naval aviator. Have you ever thought of producing "off season" content specific to reading and understanding the weather? I think there is a real need for weather specific content such as 1) weather acquisition while at sea (Iridium Go!, Garmin InReach, etc.), 2) reading the weather and clouds/cloud formations, 3) adjusting sail plans according to weather reports, etc. 4) reading pilot charts for current probabilities. Sort of a MASTER CLASS if you will. Anyways...just my two cents. You are a GREAT teacher and I learn so much by watching your videos. Keep up the great content. THANK YOU!

    Patrick, what a great voyage. Mind you, I think I would have turned straight back again when I saw (or didn't see) the totally invisible entrance to the harbour. And you didn't like the entrance to Dover? The one in the video looked about 1,000 worse to me. Really looking forward to the next part. Cheers, Paul.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  5 років тому +2

      That was quite a stressful entrance Paul. I realised that once I was committed, I would be in a very tight spot if the engine were to fail. Ooof. I could not see the entrance until very late (sorry about the camera angle --- I mounted it as I usually do, but with the waves and buffeting it slid down a bit). It looked like I was headed straight at a mountain face with high winds and seas pushing me to no escape. My eyes were glued to the iPad which kept telling me, "Hold your nerve, the open is just ahead a bit more." :-)

    Hi Patrick, I've just enjoyed another of your excellent & extremely inspirational videos, WoW!! You are in complete control of everything it seems, May I ask.. 1) When you sailed any long distance for the very first time, were you apprehensive or Nervous at all? 2) Is it the large seas & challenges that you enjoy or look for? 3) What makes you decide to go to Iceland in April instead of say June? Thoroughly enjoying your videos. Kindest regards and thanks for sharing such wonderful experiences such as yours. Carl from Crete, Greece.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  5 років тому

      Hi Carl. I was quite nervous the first few times I left the marina solo. The thing that worried me was not the wind or seas, but rather, how would I get back in. :-) I had done quite a number of local passages with a professional --- so was confident I could handle the boat safely at sea. The marina arrivals are (and remain) far more stressful than seas/winds. I went to Iceland in April instead of in June to avoid the crush of sailboats that arrive at the latter date. :-)

      I logged right at 800 NM for the passage --- at an aveage speed of 6.4 knots. I was flying despite having only the furled staysail out for 1/2 the time. Thanks for the help in in Galway. Super nice of you.

    Aahhrr! Loved that footage of ragged grey ocean and ragged grey skies and Isabelle with a smother of foam beneath her lee. Well done on a tough passage! I'm interested in hearing about your Garmin InReach as I am thinking of getting one. Not as nice but far less expensive than the Iridium GO, both initial cost and subscription. I've also heard that you can get a full one week marine forecast for $1, for SEVERAL waypoints, not just one. Is that true? Well go have a stout or whatever they roll with in Iceland. Looking forward to this vid series!

      Thanks Kevin. I've shown the InReach in several videos now. I really like it ---- a low cost Iridium GO. You only get summary info --- but it covers what you need to know: wind speed, wind direction, seas, air temp, rain and how that evolves every 6 hours for the next week. As far as I know, you can only do that for one specific lat/lon that you can type in or select from a map. Each time you ask for a marine forecast, it costs €1.49 (from memory). There is a 'basic' weather report that is free, but I've never used it. As you say, MUCH less expensive than an Iridium GO. If I were to do a Translant or Transpac, I'd get a GO to have the full GRIB. For passage of 5-10 days, I think the InReach is great value for money. I'll drink one in your name tonight.

      @@patricklaine6958 OK, will have to investigate about getting a forecast for multiple lat/lons with just one call. Still, you can get monthly pay-as-you-go contracts with InReach--with Iridium GO all I see are annual contracts, and if you want the full GRIB you're looking at about $130USD per month. Since I would only need it for two or three long passages per year, it would be much cheaper just to activate service when I need it than buy an annual contract and only use it for 2 months out of the year. Looks like not too many yachties make it to Iceland--at least at the marina you docked, I didn't see any yachts.

      Your plan is exactly what I do Kevin --- subscription that I 'suspend' as soon as I return from a trip, and then reactivate just before leaving for the next. There is a low fee for suspending -- but not a big deal (compared to Iridium GO subscription). I can't imagine how you can get wx for multiple lat/lons with one call. If someone confirms that to you, please let me know. At any rate --- €1.50 for a wx update ----- I'll take that any day. Fair winds.

    What weather app/satellite combination were you using on the iPad?

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  5 років тому

      It is the weather app that comes with the Garmin InReach. The only role that the iPad plays is a bluetooth interface to allow you to type and receive on a large screen. Each time you call for a marine weather forecast it costs €1.50, but that is still less than 1/2 the cost of an Iridium GO (but you do not get a GRIB with the InReach, just the summary info I showed).
