as someone who played hockey for over 25 years of their life, i wish it was that comparable. here's the issue with trying to translate slapshot to dg backhand
1. bigger windup does not mean harder shot. newbies normally get called out for not fully extending in the reach back, however a real bomb of a slapshot doesnt require a windup further than maybe waist height
2. Wrong hand is generating the power. For a hockey slapshot from a lefty (same body orientation as RHBH), the mass majority of your power in the slapshot is coming from the left hand on the stick, not the right
3. power is generated differently. mass majority of the power from the slapshot comes from getting your weight into it and into that lower hand. this flexes the shaft of the stick which acts like a spring and greatly increases power on the slapshot. see the replay of chara from the beginning of this and note how the shaft flexes. then realize he played with the stiffest stick in the composite era so that thing takes a good 150 lb+ of force to get bending like that. the whip effect on release is what really accelerates the puck more than anything
4. Weight distribution. When your stick makes contact with the puck, you want the entirety of your weight distributed over your front foot and driving into the lower hand on the stick, but mostly into the stick to create that flex in the shaft we talked about in point 3. Without that second point of bracing that youre going to drive the force into, the mechanics dont really match
so while the form looks the same on camera, the mechanics between a hockey slapshot and a disc golf backhand are actually wildly different. This is coming from a guy who in his late 30s and not even playing anymore can still clap a slapper at close to 80mph, but struggles to break 240 feet on a golf line tee shot

1. I agree, and also in disc golf it's not about how far you reachback. It's how fast you accelerate.
2. Absolutely. The same applies to baseball analogies, and all throwing sports.
3. Yes. And I also would say, that the bent stick acts the same way as the bending arm to create the whip. We need that.
4. The stick part I didn't know, but like in all throwing sports, including Disc Golf, the weight should be on the front leg.
5. Nice slapper! Also it's probable that you use the other side to throw, right? I mean I'm a righty slapper, but also throw righty. Not much help there!
Very true. I can shoot a slapper real hard but cant drive past 350. Right arm is relatively passive in a slapshot

I love disc golf though. The form is so similar to other sports but still unique that it feels familiar yet challenging, difficult but attainable. I think that's what really drives my addiction to it

Great video. I think Pyry Joutsen is a very great example of slapshot like disc golf throw. If I have understood right, he is in fact, a hockey player.
It's one of the best sports to transition from to Disc Golf. One of my favorite forms belongs to Alex Geisinger, also an ex-hockey player, and one of the biggest arms ever.
@@dgspindoctor Agree. Now that you say that, Geisingers form is very similar to a slapshot and I can see the similarities in Pyry and Alex. Love Geisingers form, doesn't look like much but goes a mile.
Great vid as usual! One of the things that can help get weight into the brace is pointing the back heel towards the target on the x-step. You can see Simon and the other guy doing this in the two clips at the end of this vid. This heel towards target thing automatically helps force the front foot out and forward while getting the weight off the back foot. I find this technique also helps lock in timing.
Interesting. Since I find it the total opposite. I mean, if the knee points backwards it's literally impossible for it to turn down and let the body weight fall, because the leg won't bend.
@@dgspindoctor I can see that. The back heel thing is more of "leading with the heel" because it doesn't stay that way for long, as in, I don't plant it, I just point it. Check out Eagle's footwork, that's really what I'm talking about.

What ever gets you onto the front leg to throw. This is only one in a dozen about the same concept, but I keep trying to hammer the message home!
I really like this train of thought vs the pushing from your back leg...Whilst watching the back leg videos being compared to the pros I always felt the pros were just letting the weight off of the back, and not pushing into the front leg.
As a backfoot player since I began playing, I'm reaaaaaaally trying to exaggerate lifting that back leg to make sure I'm getting onto the front leg. It is ugly right now, but I think eventually I get there. You really have to trust that front leg knee. Unfortunately, I have hurt my back leg knee by spinning on it and instead of getting my front leg down first.
Tensing the leg muscles should protect the knee joint. That is why squish the bug is such a horrible advice, because it implies not to tense the leg and instead twist the knee. The back leg doesn't have to lift high off the ground, but you really have to brace and stop the momentum.

Hay yeah.
I can shoot a puck 135 kmh but cant drive a disc past 110 meters. Hockey slapper you stand tall, push everything down against the ground and go back up. Easy to keep balance. Feels like a very vertical movement. I just cant seem to translate that feeling into the more horizontal one handed backhand drive.

This is definitely one of my biggest problems, when i brace i pish really hard and my body instinctively stands up i need to figure out how to stop that!

Unrelated to this video, I’m curious what your thoughts are on falling forward off the tee pad after a throw vs staying controlled and more or less “planted” in the follow through? I recently saw someone claiming you should “not stop yourself” and that it’s a good thing to be falling forward off the pad after a distance throw. And I haven’t been playing long enough to know whether that’s good advice or not.
Good question. Depends. You must stop yourself, that is a fact, but after how long would you ideally follow through? Doesn't really matter. But you must stop to launch the disc from the braced front leg.
Great video Jaani! How do you protect you front leg from all that pressure? I feel it is very difficult to time the release of tension by rotation, if i'm late by only a split second my knee feels like it is going to snap. It feels super dangerous.Thanks!

Yes, that's what've been saying the past few years. The off arm goes down because the body goes down, if you just let it.
Any tips for transferring weight onto the heel of the front foot? I noticed most pros privot on their heel after they release. I find I end up pivoting on my toes instead.
Put your ass out more, maybe? In other words, keep your mass more behind the brace.

Excellent breakdown. When you talk about getting your weight onto the front foot, what part of the foot do you feel is bearing most of that weight?
All of the foot, for balance. Because the center of mass, or...ass... is still behind the leg, most likely, the weight will shift towards the heel, which then pivots naturally.

@@dgspindoctor I would like to share an anecdotal thought, I've found that pushing into the outside of the plant foot helps me feel the brace best and when I use that as a swing thought I tend to brace better and throw harder. I imagine it in my head the way that Calvin Heimburg plants his foot where I'm really pushing onto the outside of my foot to stop my hip from moving past my knee before the pivot. This helps me brace against more momentum than I've been able to in the past.

No, if you don't want it to. There are many ways to dip down, you don't have to lean over with the upper body that much, and you can control the disc angle with the arm, too.
How would you tie in the thigh master move to this?
The thigh master should happen quite automatically when you tense the muscles of the front leg. At this point I see the thigh master merely as an activation drill, but who knows...
