It seems like HGV drivers are just the first of many roles that are going to face real challenges.
We've spent years denigrating certain professions (HGV drivers, shop workers, farmers, any trade where you use your hands really) in favour of media studied degrees. We're going to be up the shitter in a few years when these sectors grind to a halt.
The pessimist in me thinks lots of the vacuum will be filled by China, and we'll end up even more beholden to them and unable to criticise them.
I'm sure you've thought of it and looked, but I know from family experience that lots of Classic Car resto garages are always looking for decent competent mechanics. Having learned a lot from your Land Rover videos (that's what originally brought me to your channel) I'm sure you'd be great at it. There's quite a few Land Rover resto places round me, but I'm in Warwickshire so not of any direct use to you.

Chris, you've got a natural talent for making this mechanikermankle stuff look easy. I have relied on your Disco 1 and defender videos to get my truck going, so thanks a million. You've saved me a fortune!
Go pro! Your work will be really appreciated!

Hi Chris, you're absolutely bang on with what you have described. I have 30 years experience as a hgv fitter/technician and I left it 6 months ago to go driving. I miss the spanners but glad I'm out of it now. There is no respect shown by most employers and like you say training courses are for the very few but we are expected to now everything about everything. Personally I feel I jumped at the right time, I'm on more now than in the workshop and have no stress or hassle at all. I steer clear of other drivers because I do not want to get involved in company politics, frilly curtains or 700 BHP. It has been mentioned in the news about a shortage of 35000 mechs to maintain electric cars.... there has been a dire shortage for years but it has never been in the press. Good luck in whatever you do 👍

If you have a class 1 just go and drive them. I miss being a mechanic sometimes, but i don't miss spending a chunk of my wages on tools, its madness when we think about it, we are effectively paying out to go to work.

Hi Chris been watching your videos here in Ireland, I just realised what's been happening and .after 17 years away from the trade I recently went back to work as a hgv mechanic for what I can only describe as job satisfaction that's when I discovered your videos your work ethics and craftsmanship is how I try to model myself on you remind me of the man I served my time with. I really hope you get it back on track. I found your videos greatly informative and have watched and re watched some of them picking up the information that has helped me. Thanks and best of luck .

Enjoy your videos mate and you're absolutely on point with this one. Pretty well all the guys I know in engineering in it's many and various forms are struggling - highly skilled workers in all cases who could earn a better living with the supermarkets. Some of them are living in their overdraft all the time and that's just not right. I'm just about to move on myself for some of the reasons you outline - there are always options as you say, but it's always a bit of a leap of faith.
Good luck - you certainly have the experience and personality for teaching and being able to convey practical knowledge and skills in the way that you do is a real skill in it's own right.

Here in Sweden the cheapest registered mechanic charges 70 quid an hr and the BWM/Mini garage charges 83 quid an hr. Recently my wife’s mini needed a new belt tensioner total price 1,250 quid. Luckily still under warrantee. That said the garages pay serious taxes, I have no idea how they make it work… Thanks to your videos I save a fortune on my Landy. So I owe you a decent dinner and a beer, or two. Cheers Michael

Awesome video as usual 👌. Sadly you're right, this is not what we were expecting our lives to turn up. Lost my HGV license cause of diabetes. I wasn't expecting my Dr to inform DVLA. Now Xmas is upon us, I'm lost. I spent time collecting any pallets and wood and worn tyres which I cut to fit in my fire place but I think the neighbours are wondering where this smell is coming from. I was barred from my local lidl for not paying for milk and loaf. Sent few cv's but to no avail. You're definitely speaking my language Chris. I just hope we get through this month and wish 2021 brings us some lights to find away out. Worked 8 years in Canada and 10 in Australia as HGV driver and in uk they told me I didn't contributed enough in taxes. Filled few forms 10 months ago and still haven't heard back anything positive. Sometimes I wish all this Corona comes to me in one go and call it a day. I wish you the very best ✌❤☘🍀

My college tutor was on 40k a year to teach 32 weeks. He used to have to graft all day without breaks cram his lunch down his neck in 5 minutes flat and carry on to earn that working at Ford. It's just shocking that there's people working as a corner shop assistant on more than imo highly skilled professionals.

I don’t usually comment on videos Chris, but what about going on your own? Go mobile HGV mechanic and just do time where people need you?
Either that or put your class 1 to use and drive them. Might not fit round family though.
Could always combine both. Bit of agency driving plus mobile mechanic? There’s a couple of agencies in Norwich. The one on silver road isn’t great but the one on bank plain is good. Penny her name is.

I think the harder you work the more you get shafted in terms of pay, free time etc. I'm a young guy in farming which as an industry looks like its starting to get killed off by the government and I know I work harder and longer hours than 99% of well payed office workers, except its £12/hr for me which seems a good wage which it very telling when you show jobs advertised at £17! I know I'm glad that I have a home to go to where most days there's food ready and not a lot left for me to do. As you said there's overtime work (I had a 280hr + month not including my own personal work and not including my fixing car for mot etc) but often I think if I wasn't in farming life would be a lot easier! I feel for you wearing yourself out for nothing then having house responsibilities when you get home, I don't think I'd manage. All the best and hope things start looking up for you!

Good see another video. Great shame about not being able to do the stuff we're accustom to over recent years. I'm not looking, nor bothered about what writing is on the side of the vehicles you do your work on. I don't see that to say "Lynn star, British sugar or what ever other operators as shown are running defective vehicles". On the contrary- operator(s) should be glad to have a conscious technician dealing with their wagons.

I’m a car technician I have been in the trade for 39 years I’m 55 young now and I’ve just left the garage that I worked in for 32 years . It is a car dealership that have several franchises . I left there to got to a small independent garage and only work tree days a week for more £ hour . And the boss the owner was my apprentice how things come around 😜. Anyway where I worked there is a scania lorry workshop right opposite . and when the rip off van s::p on came around . I got to talk to some of the boys and everyone’s had enough of the trade and what they got to pay out on tools 🧰 to do the job for them

This is a much bigger picture picture than any of us realise.
For decades we have had cheap European labour distorting the market. Some managers have never learned how to manage, all they have learned is how to replace.
Now they can't replace but don't know how to manage good staff or even recognise good staff.
Things will get better for all trades and working people in the UK as companies wake up to the fact that there aren't "Plenty of people out there who will do your job."
If managers don't learn the skill of managing, they are quickly going to find themselves out of work with the gates locked behind them.

Is there really a shortage of labour? I’m only 20 and I hear it a lot at work. If there’s a shortage then surely our wages would slowly increase? My last place was paying £11 to £12 for a welder doing medium/heavy fab and stick welding to withstand constant vibration.
The next problem is managers not knowing what their employees are worth.
My friend has gone into this crypto trading plague and kind of tried to scam me mates into it. I don’t care if he earns more in an hour than what I do a day, I’ll earn the money without tricking my friends into being financially at risk for my own benefit.
