Holy shit, how did you manage with 65% SpO²? When we were offroading in South America, one of us dropped to 80% when we were in the Andes and he was seriously ill because of it. We almost broke up the trip. In a hotel it hit me too when I woke up and felt like I was suffocating, but no matter how much I breathed the feeling wouldn't go away. One of the worst experiences in my life. I take my hat off to you for powering through this.
@DirectorHMAN *Actually it's not.* *"Micro-evolution" is a misnomer and generally accepted among scientists as an incorrect term.* *The correct term is **_Adaptation_** - which is not the same thing as the concept of Evolution (what some people term as "Macro-Evolution.)*
@@DirectorHMAN *To give you an example: People watching this video probably think that the people born in that town "evolved" to produce twice the amount of blood cells to live there, right?* *It actually doesn't work that way - every organism on this planet has a limited ability to naturally adjust to new surroundings (within given circumstances).* *The people born there did not "evolve" some new aspect to their physiology that became permanent.* *Their bodies naturally acclimated to produce twice the amount of blood cells to live there - but as soon as they leave that town and go live at the lower elevations with the rest of the Human race - their bodies will then revert back to producing the normal amount of blood cells.* *The same as you, a person who was not born there, will also acclimate naturally and produce twice as many blood cells as normal, just like them.* *And it will not become a permanent part of your physiology.* *Once you leave to the normal lower elevations, your body will produce the normal amount of blood cells - no "Evolution" involved.* *Evolution and Adaptation are two different things and are not mutually-exclusive.* *This is why there is no such thing as "Micro-Evolution" and "Macro-Evolution" - those are misnomers.* *There is only either Adaptation or "Evolution".* *And this story demonstrably doesn't involve any Evolution.*
That sort of thing is why biology is cool. Athletes will improve their stamina by limiting their oxygen intake, usually by wearing masks. This makes their lungs more efficient and probably does some other neat things as well. If La Rinconada was better maintained, athletes would probably travel there to train. Though there’s probably all sorts of problems with that idea too, so maybe not
altitude sickness is the worst feeling in the world. imagine having zero energy to do anything but writhe in agony, a severe headache that wont go away, nausea that wont go away, shortness of breath, no appetite, high blood pressure, being tired but unable to sleep due to these symptoms persisting for 12-24 hours until you acclimatize and get a good meal in you. you truly feel like you are dying because you are.
@@youmightknowmelater1212interesting, i didnt know that. my experience with altitude sickness was from backpacking to the summit of Mt. Whitney in the Sierra Nevadas... at about 11,000ft/3300m it starts for most people, and hiking slowly up to that elevation doesnt help, it's basically unavoidable if you normally live at sea level.. but everyone seems to be affected by it differently (different lengths of time, same horrible symptoms)
I've been there. I was able to see into the informal gold mines there. The first night up there it felt like my skull was being crushed. I cried and begged my boyfriend to take me back down to Puno. I stuck it out and chewed coca leaves and drank Maca to help with the symptoms. The conditions are rough there. Trash is stscked on the side of the mountain and scattered across walking paths. There is also human trafficking of young girls and women there. There is no water or sewage lines. We only used sealed bottled water and a bucket for the bathroom. You can pay for a hotel but we stayed in a sheet metal shack there because we were there to get the stories of the miners that lived there. The people we were meeting there were so welcoming and nice. They also love to drink and at that altitude the alcohol hits! Thanks for sharing! This was a great video and brought back memories. 😊
I'm not exactly 4450 meters high, but when I play soccer at sea level I lack oxygen, it's like the amount of oxygen doesn't supply what my lungs need. well I can explain it like this
I wonder if it would affect them differently too though. For example, astronauts who been out in space for a while need time too, to adjust to the gravity. I know it wouldn’t be as extreme as astronauts but I wonder if it would be the same for those who were born and raised in such high elevations.
afaik altitude training works if you do it periodically not constantly. Staying at altitude constantly will make your body adapt to that altitude. When you go back to sea level your body is not adapted to that level anymore. This is why even professional athletes do high altitude camps for a short period of time.
As a registered nurse, I almost had a heart attack when I saw your oxygen level. I freak out if I see anything below 90%. Even when I get really bad asthma attacks, I've never dropped to anything below 85% - I can't imagine having the percentage in the 60s. Props to you for making this journey.
@@Turnpost2552 I am aware. I'm just putting into put into perspective that my asthma attacks, aka a condition where breathing becomes difficult, results in an O2 that is still higher than what he experienced.
This place is insane. I had no idea places like this existed. I wouldn't have survived that altitude, even for a short visit. Just amazing. Thanks for this interesting video!
Oh really and what your geography teacher taught you in elementary school I'm sick of some people uninterested to know about other countries example what do you know about Albania ?
I've lived my whole life in a sea level area in the US, except for a trip to Asia years ago where I toured several countries, and I can say without any doubt, altitude sickness for a healthy full grown 26 year old man is the most miserable and willpower breaking experience I have ever had in my life. Two of our group were part of a team who planned to climb Everest so we got to visit Dingboche near Everest to drop them off and I was miserable for the whole 24 hours we stayed. Nauseous, head splitting headaches, constant coughing and drainage, muscle cramps just walking around town, and lightheadedness like I was in a fog. It didn't clear till we dropped back down to about 10k feet and took me a good day to get back to feeling some what normal. I have mad respect for folks who can actually live at those altitudes. I will stick to my little piece of the world at 12 feet above sea level here in America.
I'm a Cardiologist and I freak out when I have patients with an O2 sat of 65%. It's crazy to see that you voluntarily put your body through that, yet I applaud your dedication to share your experience! Stay safe!
lol u need a doctor to tell you your having trouble breathing or you eat like a pig so your clogging your arteries? that's about as dumb as people needing a therapist to share their feelings... But hey if you have want to spend thousands of dollars go for it I guess :)@@kevinpresently

I've been here and it is another level of pain. You feel all the bad symptoms of being drunk, with none of the good ones. Incredibly nauseous, very hungover, can't sleep, can't think, oh and it is cold. I spent 5 days there, and I was physically and mentally done with this barren wasteland. People were really nice though.
I got Pneumonia a few years ago and after weeks of getting sick, coughing, and bordering on what felt like passing out for days I went to the ER and got my Oxygen checked, and I was sitting around 67%. They didnt let me leave and immediately put me on oxygen, ended up stuck with forced oxygen for a couple days. Its crazy being around 65%, moving and trying to do anything is so exhausting and difficult. Props for going to this place and putting yourselves through this to document and show people this part of world.
I know man!! I was in Juliaca area and Amantani Island and i nearly died of pneunomia. I was taken to Puno hospital with 54% blood oxyden. After 3 days there i was ok but man that was scary.

I am from Lima, and few people know about this place. I have a friend from Puno, and when I asked her about La Rinconada, she was completely unaware of it. Now I see that it is heavily polluted, and the Peruvian government doesn't care; it only focuses on foreign investment. In the long run, that glacier supplies water to cities much further downstream.
I made a friend from a small town in peru and she told me about the failures of the government and the growing corruption. This documentary felt like a refresher on all the things she told me. For her the most distressing things she experienced were only talked about for a short period in this video. The underage "companion" girls that the government doesnt care about protecting.

Huge respect for you and your crew, also the tour guide that seemed received higher education and willing to devoted himself to this place. As a Chinese who lived in the mainland of China 30 years ago, I witnessed a bit of what a underdeveloped country is like, and this documentary reminds me a lot of the pre-developed China, and the memory seemed a lifetime ago. I can never imagine there are still people living in such uninhabitable condition nowadays. It's really disheartening seeing people stuck in such environment.

I love learning about different places in the world and have traveled quite a bit. This blew my mind! I had never heard of this place. I am a respiratory therapist and seeing what you went through, I imagine it was your most difficult trip as of yet. The levels of O2 and your symptoms were dangerously low and the misery in your face showed it so. I hope you take care of yourself on your other adventures.
It was hard to watch for me because he was so miserable the whole time. When I was travelling in Peru, I was mostly fine, but my mother got really sick, even though we first went up to 2000 m and then continued to 4000. It took her almost 10 days to adapt to the altitude... After the 2000 m town, we crossed a mountain pass that was close to 5000 and the bus stopped there for a loo break - strangest place ever for a public toilet. I had never been higher up than 2500 m. When the bus started hooting the horn, I ran over there and climbed up the 3 steps of this old school bus, and suddenly I was so out of breath and grasping for air as if I'd run a marathon, and the locals were laughing. I found it very hard to sleep in the 4000 m places, the only way was with many pillows under my head, on my back, and with lots of clothes on instead of heavy blankets. I'd still always find a way to bury my head in the pillow and wake up gulping and grasping for air
@@PunchBuggyDreams It was an amazing experience. Cusco, Macchu Pichu, Lake Titicaca are all at 3500-4000m altitude and millions of tourists visit these places every year.

Literally this is no way to live, to earn a few hundred dollars only to die early. I mean life is tough in third world countries but what's the point of suffering for a few bucks. I've noticed that man's hands are clubbed, a symptom of disease due to a lack of oxygen. All sorts of blood clots, arterial blockage result in a lack of oxygen due to a thickened blood resulting in early heart attacks and strokes, no thanks.
Wow, this place is insane. Last month I assended Mount Teide on Tenerife. It was about 3600 m and was shocked how much more difficult to breathe and exercise. As someone born and raised in a city at 3,000 meters altitude, you DO get used to it. Even if you're not from a high altitude place, in a matter of days you'll be feeling fine. But it does hit hard at first. Even us natives need a few days to get back to normal after traveling to low altitude places.
@@ahalpert I don't know at 5,000 meters. That's pretty high and it's pretty rough. At 3,000 meters though? For sure. My city has over 8 million inhabitants. You can bet people are giving birth here. According to statistics, the infant mortality and childbirth mortality rates are on par with the rest of the country, so it doesn't seem like height has a particularly negative impact on that. However, I have known plenty of elderly people as well as people with respiratory diseases who need to move elsewhere because the lack of oxygen starts to affect them. But some of my classmates had asthma growing up and it didn't seem to affect them particularly worse than people in lower altitudes.

Siendo de Perú tengo sentimientos encontrados, feliz porque visitaste mi país pero triste por la realidad con la que te encontraste. Gracias Ruhi por enseñarle al mundo lo que las autoridades en mi país no quieren mostrar
This was so intense. I’ve never heard of such conditions. What a sacrifice to live a life like that. It was a gamble just to document. Amazing work on this video.
I was born in a small town at the bottom of El Pico de Orizaba, (Citlaltépetl Volcano) in Mexico. I didn’t know about the difference in oxygen levels between places until I grew up and travelled to other countries. When I took my boyfriend to my hometown to meet my grandmother, he couldn’t breathe and felt dizzy. This place is very similar to El Pico de Orizaba. You should visit it as well. It’s cold so be prepared.
It is not at all similar! This Peruvian village has no infrastructure whatsoever, just look at these housing and sanitation conditions! It is extreme poverty. And that village in Veracruz is beautiful.
Hola, cómo se llama el lugar de dónde eres? Yo soy del estado de veracruz, relativamente cerca de orizaba, alguna vez fui a las faldas del pico (citlaltepetl) y me sentí super mal por la altura.. Me gustaría regresar algún día. ❤
Its also crazy, because it seems most of them choose to be there. He said almost nobody in the town is from the town, they all come to mine for gold. I also hope they all find they way home❤
In 2018 I spent 5 weeks in Cusco, which is at an elevation of about 3400 meters. I would wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air and when walking around the city would have to walk several hundred meters and then sit down and rest for 5 or so minutes. I can't even imagine living at over 5000 meters. It is so sad that the Peruvian government has done nothing for this place. Your videos are amazing! Thanks for this effort.
The people know that place is not for made a house or live, they assume the danger.

I bet a lot of these people are grateful to not be dead, I mean they are the eyes of the world, my friend Casey Jones once spent some time there and he brought his necklace of saint Stephen with him after truckin up the mountain, I think he also chewed a few of those leaves because he said he was high on cocaine, an that's when he met his now wife while walking down shakedown street met his soon to be wife althea, he got the us blues after awhile and brought her back. All jokes aside. This is an awesome video to show people like us, that we truly have it easy. We really do. Such a shame that the government won’t intervene and help them out. Although, people are there for selfish reasons. Such as finding gold but man I still think the locals that grew up there, deserve way more. Especially those kids. I’m praying for them.

RT here, the partial pressure of oxygen in the air is lower, which can result in a lower arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2). While the pulse oximeter can still measure oxygen saturation, it will reflect the decreased oxygen availability at altitude, potentially showing a lower reading than what you'd expect at sea level

I lived there for a year when I was 5 years old. I still remember that the place was relatively safe and my father took me and his partner there. I could play in the snow and so far it is the only time I have touched that material in my life. It is a pity that today that place is synonymous with DANGER. The only good thing I got out of there, is not the gold, it was the ability to breathe at high altitudes without the need to take pills like everyone else.
wild to find someone thats lived there in the comments.(granted it is the internet). its probably one of the most extreme environments ive seen people just, living in. without complicated shelters and infrastructure and all that.
Man, it's amazing to me that almost no matter how miserable and unsafe of a place there is, people always manage to settle and raise families there. To clarify...I mean unsafe and miserable because they are breathing in dangerous chemicals. Therefore, their average lifespan is short.
@@braddavis3821 Yes I was thinking the same for those poor kids. It seems no one actually gets rich doing this. The gold they find is so small, they can't even enjoy life. And then they suffer from their environment and die young. 😞

When we were offroading in South America, one of us dropped to 80% when we were in the Andes and he was seriously ill because of it. We almost broke up the trip. The fact the people in that town actually micro evolved to handle that oxygen quantity is amazing
Yup, that's evolution
@DirectorHMAN *Actually it's not.*
*"Micro-evolution" is a misnomer and generally accepted among scientists as an incorrect term.*
*The correct term is **_Adaptation_** - which is not the same thing as the concept of Evolution (what some people term as "Macro-Evolution.)*
@@DirectorHMAN *To give you an example: People watching this video probably think that the people born in that town "evolved" to produce twice the amount of blood cells to live there, right?*
*It actually doesn't work that way - every organism on this planet has a limited ability to naturally adjust to new surroundings (within given circumstances).*
*The people born there did not "evolve" some new aspect to their physiology that became permanent.*
*Their bodies naturally acclimated to produce twice the amount of blood cells to live there - but as soon as they leave that town and go live at the lower elevations with the rest of the Human race - their bodies will then revert back to producing the normal amount of blood cells.*
*The same as you, a person who was not born there, will also acclimate naturally and produce twice as many blood cells as normal, just like them.*
*And it will not become a permanent part of your physiology.*
*Once you leave to the normal lower elevations, your body will produce the normal amount of blood cells - no "Evolution" involved.*
*Evolution and Adaptation are two different things and are not mutually-exclusive.*
*This is why there is no such thing as "Micro-Evolution" and "Macro-Evolution" - those are misnomers.*
*There is only either Adaptation or "Evolution".*
*And this story demonstrably doesn't involve any Evolution.*
@@Percival-kl9yyinteresting!
Agreed, can't describe it any better.
Having a flight back to a lower descended altitude can be painful too which I didn’t know about until a few days ago
So why go to such an altitude? XD
Reminds me of my POTs lol
Did you post your stories about the miners anywhere? Would be curious to read about it.

Runners who grew up in this area would be absolute monsters at sea level
I'm not exactly 4450 meters high, but when I play soccer at sea level I lack oxygen, it's like the amount of oxygen doesn't supply what my lungs need. well I can explain it like this
What do you mean?
I wonder if it would affect them differently too though. For example, astronauts who been out in space for a while need time too, to adjust to the gravity. I know it wouldn’t be as extreme as astronauts but I wonder if it would be the same for those who were born and raised in such high elevations.
afaik altitude training works if you do it periodically not constantly. Staying at altitude constantly will make your body adapt to that altitude. When you go back to sea level your body is not adapted to that level anymore. This is why even professional athletes do high altitude camps for a short period of time.
@@jaaybee3926no such thing

Two of our group were part of a team who planned to climb Everest so we got to visit Dingboche near Everest to drop them off and I was miserable for the whole 24 hours we stayed. Nauseous, head splitting headaches, constant coughing and drainage, muscle cramps just walking around town, and lightheadedness like I was in a fog. It didn't clear till we dropped back down to about 10k feet and took me a good day to get back to feeling some what normal. I have mad respect for folks who can actually live at those altitudes. I will stick to my little piece of the world at 12 feet above sea level here in America.

Now I see that it is heavily polluted, and the Peruvian government doesn't care; it only focuses on foreign investment. In the long run, that glacier supplies water to cities much further downstream.

Go visit but not alone.
@@PunchBuggyDreams It was an amazing experience. Cusco, Macchu Pichu, Lake Titicaca are all at 3500-4000m altitude and millions of tourists visit these places every year.

As someone born and raised in a city at 3,000 meters altitude, you DO get used to it. Even if you're not from a high altitude place, in a matter of days you'll be feeling fine. But it does hit hard at first. Even us natives need a few days to get back to normal after traveling to low altitude places.
@@Corredor1230But does anyone give birth there? Might it not be dangerous for pregnant women and babies? I dunno

@@braddavis3821 Yes I was thinking the same for those poor kids. It seems no one actually gets rich doing this. The gold they find is so small, they can't even enjoy life. And then they suffer from their environment and die young. 😞
@@braddavis3821 como ir marte :)
@@braddavis3821you look at it as the desire for wealth, but maybe it’s the desire to get out of poverty?
Keep it up this was amazing
I had wicked altitude sickness when I visited Colorado and honestly felt like I was dying. I can't even fathom your experience in La Rinconada. WOW 😳

@@BlockchainMoney87 Denver isn't even high altitude lol... It's at 5,200 ft.
I never thought that there is actually existing place like this.. how the people can survive in an environment like that.
This video is very informative and Eye awakening that sometimes you keep complaining about little things forgetting how bless you are compared to others… keep safe
& God bless
Really! When I saw the video about Whittier in Alaska, I couldn't believe the crazy life those people lead.
