This is very impressive but I'm a little confused and could really do with some help. I've got a Macbook Air M1 with three 1080p monitors and one 3440x1440p ultrawide (All monitors are HDMI). Is this suggesting that in order to run them all I'd need to buy the following: 1 x Docking Station = ~£290 2 x USB 3.0 to DisplayPort adapters = ~£160 each (£360) 4 x Active DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter = ~£14 each (£56) For a total of ~£700 All to run 4 monitors :/ Not blaming this video on the cost, of course, I think you've done an excellent job on the content!
Is the "CalDigit TS3 Plus 15-Port Thunderbolt 3 Dock" considered overboard if I only need three monitors? Could I use a plug and play USB-C to 2 HDMI ports? I guess I'm not techie enough to understand lol I am looking to upgrade my computer to the new M1 MacBook air or pro. Also want to get 2 new monitors to go with it. I'm just hoping for a simple setup. What do you suggest I get to connect the MacBook to 2 monitors? There were so many adapters mentioned in the video so I'm not sure which one to get. Thanks a bunch!
Correct me if I'm wrong. This has always been available for tb3, but you lose all GPU acceleration on the extra displays. You can even do this with just a usba port on an old mac or pc with the appropiate driver and adapters. But you lose GPU acceleration.

Thanks for the super helpful video! One question, the USB 3.0 adapter has to be connected through Thunderbolt to work or can I connect it directly to the back of the mac mini? As I understand, those are 3.0 as well!
I’m so confused. How did you get your MacBook Air to hook up to all the monitors? Through the caldigit? Is the output on the caldigit thunderbolt 3? Is there an alternative for the caldigit? Also, the same method for the air will work for the pro right?
He uses DisplayLink software to enable sending video output over USB 3. Then he uses USB 3.0 to Dual DisplayPort adapters to connect the monitors. The dock is for convenience (and since the M1 Macs have only two ports). I guess you could run up to 4 displays like this without the dock.
For the MacBook Air I used port 1 for the one main display that is supported then I used the CalDigit to add USB 3.0 ports. You could also use a USB C Hub to add full-speed USB 3.0 ports if you need less! All of the DisplayLink adapters then went into USB 3.0. The CalDigit also charges, so the USB C hub would need to support PD (power delivery) so you can plug the charger in
Now that you have the Macbook Air can you try see if there is a performance difference if you put a thermal pad between the heat spreader and the base of the Macbook? Thanks so much for this helpful video!

Great Video and great M1. However the real question to me: Why does Apple not officially support more external displays (like it was the case with intel processors) if this M1 is already a beast?! Why they are not supporting and forcing us to go for third party solution, why not make things easy? I hope they will fix this with the new Macbooks end of 2021!

I've got a Macbook Air M1 with three 1080p monitors and one 3440x1440p ultrawide (All monitors are HDMI).
Is this suggesting that in order to run them all I'd need to buy the following:
1 x Docking Station = ~£290
2 x USB 3.0 to DisplayPort adapters = ~£160 each (£360)
4 x Active DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter = ~£14 each (£56)
For a total of ~£700
All to run 4 monitors :/
Not blaming this video on the cost, of course, I think you've done an excellent job on the content!
Is the "CalDigit TS3 Plus 15-Port Thunderbolt 3 Dock" considered overboard if I only need three monitors? Could I use a plug and play USB-C to 2 HDMI ports? I am assuming that the software is the key? Appreciate video as I was ready to return my new Mac Mini with the M1 chip. I teach at a local university and for my online classes, I need 3 monitors. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks, Raven
Great work. Think you could report back on rotating 1or 2 screens 90°? These docks often cause painful lagging even on moving the cursor when you rotate the screen. Hope the dock drivers improve on this issue in the future
Question I have MacBook Pro w/ M1 and so disappointed to find out it only allows 1 external display. But great video and really hoping I can get this to work...but after installing the software I do not see it in Security & Privacy...am I missing something?
Thanks for the effort, the result and tips.
You’re welcome good sir.
Thank you for the kind words :’]
Thanks! Extremely helpful:)
You’re welcome 😁 thank you!
Oh wow?!
You Sir are a wizard!
I just got an M1 Mac mini and I'm just trying to connect two monitors (LG Ultrafine 4K and my BenQ 4K with DisplayPort) through my CalDigit TS3 Plus...no dice.
I must be doing something wrong.
Stupid question but can you daisy chain monitors if they are all connected through thunderbolt 3?
well done! i appreciate much your effort!
great test. you earned a new sub
Thank you and welcome! 😁
Thank you for your awesome video!
Thanks for the comment and kind words 🙏😁
Correct me if I'm wrong.
This has always been available for tb3, but you lose all GPU acceleration on the extra displays.
You can even do this with just a usba port on an old mac or pc with the appropiate driver and adapters. But you lose GPU acceleration.
Yo your channel is popping lol. Keep it up
😁👋 awesome to hear from you man! Will do!
@@RuslanTulupov Is it possible on new macbook air/pro M1 to switch off the screen of the macbook and connect the macbook to TWO external screens ? thank you for your answer ;) ;) ;) ;)
Awesome Video! Sir can I ask you? Can that setup match my needs, I need 1 port for LED Screen, 1 for Stage monitor, 1 for Atem Blackmagic TV Studio, 1 for TV monitor??
Thank you so much.
I run Propresenter 7 to all monitors
Yessir! 🙂
Thanks for your input!
so if I just wanted to connect 3 monitors to the M1, would I technically just need to get the usb 3.0 to Hdmi adapter and utilize 1 usb c port and the hdmi port on the Mac mini? do you have a diagram? I suck at computers...
Yep exactly... #1: HDMI #2: USB C > HDMI #3: USB 3.0 > HDMI
The CalDigit also charges, so the USB C hub would need to support PD (power delivery) so you can plug the charger in
This works great. Thanks so much Ruslan,
You're welcome, thank you for the comment and kind words!
The caldigit Thunderbolt 3 is not available. Would the Caldigit TS4 work? I only need to have 3 monitors using the Apple mini.
Yes! Let me update the description links as well Thanks for the heads up!
Now that you have the Macbook Air can you try see if there is a performance difference if you put a thermal pad between the heat spreader and the base of the Macbook? Thanks so much for this helpful video!
Awesome video. Much respect for this. I'm going pair up with a mac mini m1 and propresenter 7
Awesome man
CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt 3 Dock is no longer avsilable. What to use?
The following is an alternative that is Thunderbolt 4 and has USB 3.0 ports and USB C ports for additional screens: amzn.to/37hQXHi
Thank you for letting me know.
What a great test.
Great video man
Thank you :’]
Excellent test!
Didn't like the noises the those 2 people were making, but 10/10 for the tech content.
This is absolutely awesome... do you know if the same approach is possible with 5k Retina 27 Imac inleu of m1 mac? everywhere online tells me its only capable of two monitors. Was wondering if with a few starlink connectors that would be possible as well. Thanks for the video and hopefully you respond.
Absolutely possible.
@@RuslanTulupov would appreciate any help you can offer. I have purchase thunderbolt3 to dual displayport connector and currently running two monitors from that, when I connect an additional monitor direct to Imac, no signal. Do I need a USB to HDMI connector or something else? appreciate insights on how to work around it
Awesome video. Im running windows through bootcamp on my Mac mini. Will this setup still work?
