The motto for the show has been fight the dead fear the living since season three so I don’t know what you’re complaining about The Walking Dead has always been about enemy groups not completely about walkers the walkers are some thing they have to deal with, but people are the real threats.
I think Daryl tried to be like Rick was but it’s hard for him because he’s not as trusting as Rick was. Rick was a lot more open and easily trusted people more as a leader. Daryl’s trying but his instincts are always coming into play.
Rick didn't trust anyone except his family. Daryl (and carl and michonne) was always talking him into trusting people. Even after the savior war when Rick was trying with the remaining saviors for Carl's memory, he didn't trust them. He didn't let them have guns and put Daryl in charge to keep them in line.
Rick turned away Tyrese and Sasha, plus Allen and his son at the prison. Not to mention he tried to send Oscar and Axel away even after he had killed Thomas and though Andrew had died. He was only really trusting before he killed Shane, like when he tried to save Randall and brought him back to the farm. Even then he didn't trust the two guys in the bar and wouldn't tell them where they was staying, even though later he made that choice redundant by bringing Randall back. He changes to be even more untrusting after Shane though. Even the people of Woodbury only got to come because the governor had open fire and killed all the ones who attacked the prison (aside from Karen). He didn't even trust Andrea when she came to the prison after she had been separated from the group, just because he had heard she was with the governor. Rick was never that trusting.
