Curaçao Sea Aquarium was founded in 1984, giving visitors of all ages access and education
about Curaçao’s amazing underwater world. The facility includes the main aquarium hall,
the Dolphin Academy, animal encounters, Ocean Lens and a Substation. You can swim or
dive with a dolphin in their natural lagoon or the open sea with the Dolphin Academy.
Common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are well known as the intelligent and charismatic
stars of many aquarium shows. Their curved mouths give the appearance of a friendly, permanent
smile, and they can be trained to perform complex tricks. Average weight and length of an adult
ranges between 220-270 kg and 2-2.7 m, but will vary widely according to geographic region.
Curaçao Sea Aquarium is unique with its Open Water system, that gives all aquariums a direct
connection to the open sea. With almost all aquariums placed in such a way that they are in
direct sunlight, the combination of natural sunlight and the constant flow of fresh seawater,
provides a 100% natural living environment for all the marine animals and plants.
Curaçao was formerly part of the Curaçao and Dependencies colony from 1815 to 1954 and later the Netherlands Antilles from 1954 to 2010, as Island Territory of Curaçao and is now formally called the Country of Curaçao. It includes the main island of Curaçao and the much smaller, uninhabited island of Klein Curaçao.
