World War I battlefield Gallipoli, Turkey 2 May 2024 I ANZAC and Ottoman memorials!
Gallipoli has become a defining moment in the history of both Australia and New Zealand, revealing characteristics that both countries have used to define their soldiers: endurance, determination, initiative and 'mateship'. For the Ottomans, it was a brief respite in the decline of their empire. But through the emergence of Mustafa Kemal (later known as Atatürk) as one of the campaign's leading figures, it also led to the foundation of modern Turkey.
Watch my other Turkey videos: ua-cam.com/play/PLjply4VDAlSI5z1W_UJXeOY-N6UXuoHa7.html&si=ezV0mijVQOqPoNoL
The Gallipoli Campaign was an Allied military operation against the Ottoman Empireduring World War I. The initial goal was to capture the Dardanelles, a strait that connects the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Marmara, and the Gallipoli Peninsula, on the strait’s western shore. Then the Allies planned to occupy Constantinople (now Istanbul), the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The operation, which was also known as the Dardanelles Campaign, took place between February 1915 and January 1916.
In the winter of 1914-15 Russian troops were fighting Ottoman forces in the Caucasus region, on the border between the Ottoman Empire and what was then the Russian Empire. In January 1915 the British government agreed to help their Russians allies by attacking the the Ottomans elsewhere, thereby relieving pressure on the Caucasus front. The British chose the Dardanelles as the place for the attack. An attack on the strait had already been proposed by Winston Churchill, who was then the first lord of the Admiralty, before Russia appealed for help.
After much disagreement among themselves, the British decided on an attempt to attack the Dardanelles with the navy alone. In mid-February, however, they agreed that army troops would be needed to hold the shores of the strait if the navy broke through. For that purpose the Allies assembled a large military force in Egypt under General Sir Ian Hamilton. Called the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, it included British, ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps), French, and Indian troops.
British warships began bombarding Ottoman ports on the Gallipoli Peninsula on February 19. The bombardment faltered, however, partly because of bad weather. The navy ended the attack in March after three battleships had been sunk and three others damaged. Hamilton’s troops began to land on the peninsula at two places early on April 25, 1915. The 29th British and Royal Naval divisions landed at Cape Helles, and the ANZACs landed at what is now called Anzac Cove. By that time, however, the Ottoman forces were six times larger than when the campaign began. The Allies took the beaches with great difficulty, the ANZACs being held up by Ottoman troops under Mustafa Kemal, who later became famous as Atatürk. Even after sending in large reinforcements, the Allies made little progress. On August 6 the British landed more troops, this time at Suvla Bay. After some initial progress, the new assault was halted.
By September 1915 it was clear to the Allies that without further large reinforcements there was no hope of decisive results. The British authorities at home decided to replace Hamilton with Lieutenant General Sir Charles Monro. Monro recommended the withdrawal of the military forces and abandonment of the campaign. The British secretary of state for war, Herbert Kitchener, affirmed this advice when he visited the peninsula in November. The Allied withdrawal was carried out in stages and was successfully completed early on January 9, 1916.
The Gallipoli Campaign ended with about casualties were 213,980
out of a force of nearly 500,000. The Ottoman Empire's victory came with an estimated 250,000 Turkish and Arab casualties defending Gallipoli. The campaign did manage to attract large Turkish forces away from the Russians, but overall it was a disaster. The plan failed because of poor military leadership in some cases, faulty tactics including complete lack of surprise, the inexperience of the troops, inadequate equipment, and a shortage of shells. Gallipoli gave the impression throughout the world that the Allies were militarily inept.

Hello! Both the Singing Dunes and the Aktau Mountains have a parking lot next to them. From there you may wander off as you please really, no one will tell you where to go etc as these are quite desolate places. The Aktau Mountains have signs telling you not no walk on the slopes up to the top, as they consist of hard packed clay and might crumble under feet. However, that's exactly what I did and all worked out fine, watch the first part off the Aktau Mountains (at 5:08 - 5:47). You will see paths formed by other visitors, just follow them if you want.

Hello! The sand dunes are just next to the parking lot and most people go directly to the top from there in some 15-20 minutes. In this video however, we turned it into a hike, starting from the opposite side in order to have the dunes for ourselves and without any tracks from other people. There are also gazelles in the area, so could be wortwhile to do some desert hiking! The Aktau Mountains on the other hand, could be more demanding, depending on your form, and one may well spend some 3 hours walking as we did in the video. In September, when this video was shot, its warm but not hot. In the winter it will be freezing cold. A small backpack with water, perhaps a wind/rain layer and camera will do the trick on both places. Some snack is optional. Its practical and quite easy to combine these two and/or other locations in the Almaty region. I had some 5 days with a guide called Max and 4x4 taking in videos 2-6 in my Kazakhstan playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLjply4VDAlSJxvMO4oEU6Qh-mEOIeC0al.html&si=XVLiYhmpdSirPh3S. Tja och tack Alber! Kazakstan är ganska okänt för de flesta som resmål, men det kan komma att ändras framöver. Jag kommer göra nio videos till från Kazakstan, so stay tuned and join the ride! 😎

I actually went looking for houses in Cazorla and La Iruela after my trip. I could also recommend Zahara de la Sierra and Carmona, small Andalusian towns with a million tales to tell and not many tourists. ✨✨✨

This locations looks amazing, and worth the effort to travel to The questions I have are Is place safe for tourist? Especially someone in there late 60’s What is the best time of year to go there? What would be the best way to get to this location? What are tourist accommodation like? And as a non Spanish speaking person (yes I’m useless and only speak English) would the language barrier be to much? That’s it any info is greatly appreciated

Hello! Cazorla & La Iruela are two towns situated next to each other in the province of Jaén, Andalusia. Going there you will feel the centuries pass by and be amazed! Its a small place but packs a big punch when it comes to sceneries, landscapes, history etc. Hiking is possible in the mountains, where waterfalls are found in the spring but tend to dry up in the hot summers, hitting 40°C and beyond. Keep in mind that most of these two towns are built on more or less steep terrain. Its a very safe and calm place for tourists, and if you're 60+ and got a few days to spare, this could be a perfect vacation spot for you. Cazorla & La Iruela are most conveniently visited by car, and there is a tourist kiosk next to Hotel Restaurante Limas, where I stayed.I believe you should be able to manage well with English, as there should be at least someone speaking it at hotels etc. Hotel Restaurante Limas was simple, clean, with friendly staff. Other hotels/accomodations would be further uphill and closer to lthe ruins of La Iglesia de Santa María. Check Booking.com for other options. If coming by car, read info about parking/garage etc when making hotel reservations. During late June, July and August its hot hitting 40°C and beyond, and in May and September warm but not those temperatures. Google for accurate temps and amount of rain. If you have seen my Spain playlist here: ua-cam.com/play/PLjply4VDAlSI7gCyRHuBc0KAzFPMLnVod.html You might see that 25 of these videos are actually filmed in 30 days, and you can easily use them as an itinerary. Start by flying to Malaga, rent a car there and take in all the places in this playlist between Malaga and Cazorla, and more if you like.. However, you will probably like to spend more time in each place than I did. Two or three days would be more normal I guess. Preferably you might stay in Spain and Andalusia for a few weeks, rent a car or find buses going to the places you fancy.

Great video, showing the beauty of Al Hoota Cave. That's great for you to have the chance to record inside views, as it is generally not allowed. ♥♥

The cave is really large and may be closed due to flooding inside it periodically. Another must see in Oman!
