In this tutorial, Dubspot Sound Design instructor and course designer Evan Sutton (aka Astrolith) shows how to layer drum sounds using Native Instruments' Battery 4.
Layering is the spice of life. There are many reasons to layer drum sounds. We can add rhythmic complexity to a sound, which can lend to the groove and improve its overall musicality. Another advantage of layering certain types of drum sounds is that it can help the sound to cut through a mix, such as in the case of an 808 kick drum. These techniques can greatly improve the sound of your drum tracks way before you get to the mixing stage. - Evan Sutton

This is one of the most legit tutorials ever. Thank you!
ok, you're Evan Sutton, I'm Kurt Otto, AKA popeye-x. I like your tutorial style and you're focusing on Battery and Kontakt (this is 4 years old, no problem) I've been making "thick beats" lately, I tend to like old school acoustic drum beats but are surrealistically fattened with careful doubling, kind of a Public Enemy + John Bonham THUD. sometimes I use 2 Battery's and 2 Kontakt's on one beat. I'm interested in learning how to bring diverse samples under one roof., or maybe two. glad I found your videos, Evan.
I just went ahead and watched this video which dubspot thought they'd go ahead and post. Now I'm going to go ahead and put my phone down and finish my dinner. Then when I get home I'm going to go ahead and try some of these techniques then I might go ahead and like this video.
Thank you for your reply. I do find that a mix sounds different on headphones then on speakers. Looks like i'll be investing in some speakers.
Thanks Evan...you convince me to try Battery again!!
yeah, thx! this is a realy good stuff to make new sounds or pimping great old sounds
I have a question, How do I get the drums in battery to run to different mixer tracks? I don't understand how people make a beat inside battery , it all goes to the same mixer channel? Don't tell me people are running several instances of battery just to get a drum and a kick and hats on separate mixer channels?
I struggle with mixing, drums in particular. Should I be using speakers instead of headphones? They pick up bass down to 20Hz but I still tend to F**k up the mix anyways. :/ Nice video though.
Really cool tips, I have to kearn my battery now.)))
Is the note retrigger in Battery 4? It was in Battery 3 but so far I cant find out how to retrigger notes in battery 4.
Thanks. A lot of people seem to be saying the same thing.
Thank you for this. Where can I find the '909 multiple kit' that you use in this tutorial? Or is your kick already processed? All my 909 samples don't sound like yours.
Is the note retrigger feature in Battery 4? I know how to do it in Battery 3 but cant figure it out in Battery 4.
@9:39 So the track is titled "Calling All Girls"?
All you need is a sequencer/VST host like Studio One / Cubase / FL Studio. Then you can just set up the sequence in the piano roll. It won't work with Reason without some serious (perhaps impossible) workarounds.
Nice Tut Evan, Thanks!
Evan, how you mapping/route your Battery 4? I've already follow all Native steps and been seen many video, but it really don't work.
Good tut, thanks!
Total newbie question... how do I edit a sound without the editor flicking between the samples used as the track plays? The only way I can edit is to stop the track. Presumably there's a button somewhere so the editor stays on one sample, right?

On the Battery4 toolbar there's a little square button -- the tooltip says "Selection follows MIDI input". DESELECT that.
Mixing on Headphones is difficult because you get the sound directly into your ear, without any room reflection and, most of the times, a heavy amount of bass. It's just an unnatural way of hearing, because normally you would have some objects and walls around the room reflecting sound and actually differing it quite a bit, but that's ok and it's ways easier mixing on speakers than on headphones.
damn I'm losing my head with this.
Why can't I select a different sound on my maschine pads in battery 4? I choose a kit, go into step mode, place the kicks in their position. Then I want to select say high hats or whatever and to place them in whatever place in step mode, BUT, I'm unable to select any other sound in the kit other than the kick. So basically I have to finger drum all the sounds into place which is what I don't want to do.
Please, if anyone understands what the hell I'm on about can you please tell me what I need to do?
Cheers.
Whats up, I've only had battery the last couple of days and I'm struggling to find a lpf/hpf (so I can blend some samples together) anyone know if there's one built in?
Yeah gotta invest in that i guess. I feel like headphones give me a headache as well.
yo man why does battery have annoying reverb even when reverb is off?
i want to hear dry percussion but everything has wet reverb
I can't get my GUI to show the "Factory or User" tabs. I can't load the factory kits! HELP!!!
Hi. Just wondered how you get drum sound to continually play a rhythm . I just seem to get one sound at a time which I have to input into my sequencer. Many thanks Warren
Hey Warren - You'll need to use midi to trigger any virtual instrument. AKA : Draw in your sequence on the channel that the instrument is assigned to (or a separate midi channel that controls the instrument) If you are launching Battery as a standalone application you would need to control it with an external device.
thanks
Sampling in battery A MUST
i use machine vst for drums even tho i dnt have the hardwear. and i love my results.. suppose i dnt need battery do i :S or doeas anyone know any advantages
Did anyone see the Midget kit???
I'm excited
thumbs up
greeting Frank
great info, thx!
Thanks for tuning in!
Ever since I got Kick 2, I stopped using kick samples and just make a perfectly tuned kick. I do like Polyplex but loading samples is kind of a pain in the ass and the results are just too random.
Thanks dude!
the track in the beginning, WHERE CAN I HEAR THE FULL TRACK
look up astrolith in soundcloud. track called mayham. cheers.
dat intro is so badass :O
I have a question. When it comes down to mixing, how are you supposed to mix your drums well into a track if the battery 4 plugin is only on one track?? I feel like i kind of wasted money on battery, cause when it comes down to it doesn't each instrument need its own track to be mixed in properly?? i mean it seems kind of dumb to use battery for one instrument on every track, right?
ever heard bout the multi output feature it has ?
no??
+Davon Corbett Do you know if there's a lpf/hpf built in?

@@93tillinfinity6 Pages 36 and 37 of the manual.
Thanks for that.
KRK Rokit5 are $150. KRK also makes good subwoofers
Is that Jason Sudeikis?
كيف لي تحميل هذ البلاجينز dwanlod
Yeah to all those beginners don’t get this I know it looks dope and easy but its more complicated then it should be
These tutorials are always about the same kind of lame dance drums... *sigh*, how about more advanced, experimental beat making and sound design
If they put up more advanced tutorials it would make signing up for their classes obsolete.
They give you enough to get by at an amateur level and leave the advanced stuff for their courses.
***** Dude, don't compare random dudes on the net to a school that issues degrees. It's far from a moot point.
4:59 is some messed up kinky talk and 6:23 he sounds like mr garrison but damn this is some good video
Mr Mackey?
You Need some good neutral speakers to hear what's in the mix for real.
Trap music has completely destroyed hip hop, just leave it alone. 808 kits have been around since 1980. That's right 33 years. Let's try and come up with something a little more original and innovative.
I was just talking about this. all this technology and ways to make new sounds but people keep doing the same thing
This video had 808 likes. Seems fitting XD
Still like Geist so much more.......
Aime
Uao
man could you please send those kits to my mail .
Michael Nehemiah no idiot smh
Michael Nehemiah stfu you really think this instructor is going to take time out of his day to send a random nobody on youtube with a superman pic his drums? no thank you
ok man sorry for that! hey which country you are from?
Why always this simple stuff from dubspot? It's always like they don't want to share stuff that is not mediocre
Because then they wouldn't make money off their courses now would they? If you want mediocre and advanced techniques go join their school otherwise be happy with the FREE tutorials that aren't meant to make you any better than an amateur, it's basically to show people who are interested but have no musical knowledge just how easy it is to start learning.
+YouNolf I agree, I was expecting a whole lot more.
low pass that clap layer
Christ, dont buy KRK. get some yamahas. hs50's.
Haha!! What the actual fuck.. I'd say the total opposite!! Who cares about the individual sound if it fits perfect in the mix!! NO INDIVIDUAL SOUND SHOULD BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE ENTIRE MIX/SONG!! Did you just seriously say "we shouldn't be making things totally fit together, in the mix" WTF?? HAHAHA
This is not very interesting to say the least.
sounds like shit
rather use Kick
Can anyone tell how to export or put the sample on edit window?????
AUX EDM .. you deff need studio monitors to do any decent mixing.. headphones are good for certain situations but always finish your mix with studio.monitors
Do I need a keybord or a maschine for making an drumline wiht Battery or could I use it just with an PC ?
Great sound!. is there a midi of this song available?
Why are your samples not starting at the start point in the wav? They are triggering part way through.
How can I get Battery not to import sounds into the cell when i'm auditioning. Also, If I accidentally import a sound into a cell is there a undo?
Never mind. I got it.
Cori Jacobs Did you work out how to undo? I could do with knowing. Battery doesn't understand things like Ctrl+Z, lol
Guitarded270 Unfortunetely there is no undo in battery. I just save my project before making any changes to Battery.
That would be the samples not Battery
You totally sound like Jason Sudeikis!
Thanks that was useful, interesting and well presented.
koo...
Getting it today, looks very nice.
Great tutorial! Never thought to use a snare for the tick.
