- It's weird that someone in Japan made a game about the all-American pastime of monster trucks and didn't bring it to the U.S., right? Well, mystery solved: The game is a terrible Excitebike clone with inscrutable mechanics, and it would have bombed terribly here in America. It certainly didn't win many fans in its own home territory…

Yeah, I had the same hope. The one time I NEEDED them, the condescending pedants were nowhere to be found! Typical.

Don't feel too bad for Another; it wasn't so much a studio, but presumably just one programmer (Naoki Morishima) taking contract work. This was the company's last game because he got hired by Toshiba as a producer not long after this released.

I’m pretty sure that Mean Machines had the same ratings as most of Europe, with 75% being just about passable, above 80% being good and above 90% being very good. 60-odd percent would mean it was trash. Those percentages were chosen to keep advertisers sweet, they saw the percentage, and didn’t understand it.
Yeah, they should be read school grades - below 50% would be a total failure, so 60% is already pretty bad.

I saw a video of this game last week when I was looking for a Game Boy game to buy. My initial impression of it was "Why does this look so slooooow?"
I didn't watch far enough into the video to find out if they got past the trucks that block your path.

I love monster trucks but I do not understand how they cannot make a good monster truck game that is realistic. Monster trucks race two at a time, like in dragster racing, and in every game, despite the attempt, the creators fall short.

Awww. I feel sorry for these clumsy little monster trucks haplessly bumbling along in their minimal world.
They could have animated the wheels separately from the chassis, created a simple physics simulation for the wheels interacting with the logs of rocks in the road and the relation to the suspension and chassis ... oh well
Yeah, there sure are a lot of things they COULD have done with this game.

Poever It was difficult to do fast paced games on the gameboy and still have things be visible, as any movement made the screen blur. Later games managed to do it really well with good art style, like Metroid 2 was great and faster paced.
What a weak attempt of a game this is :(
i'm looking forward on your take on the next game! It was one of my favorites back in the day and when I turn back to it now, I can tell I've lost my racing skills on that one :)
why did "Bigfoot " get released on NES but not this clear knockoff for game boy?

This is probably the one point I'd disagree on, like you want to keep the momentum of badnaming. The graphics are passable at worst.

Wow this game looks really bad, slow and just bland looking, i honestly cant wait for when you finally get to F1 Race that is a racer done right on the Gameboy.
There is a good as heck GB racer coming as soon as NEXT EPISODE. Wow!
The only other decent racer I know, is Lamborghini American Challenge, but it was a bit too easy.
