To me Tschaikowski is the greatest classical composer who ever lived !
Mr Karabanoff and his wonderful St. Petersburg Philharmonic musicians have come up with some of the greatest performances of these Russian masterpieces ever. Tschaikowsky would be so proud!
I've listened to this on cassette countless nights when going to sleep until I was 7 or 8 years old. 30 years later I remember every note. I MUST see this in person someday.

Russia had best novelists and composers in the 19th century.Russian school represented national pride and culture of Ortodox church on the best way.This conductor is gold.And ofc,there`s not a better place to perform this masterpiece than Hermitage in Paris of the East-Saint Petersburg.

@@ivanmilonov Bach was important for religious side of music and dedication to the God, Wagner on the other hand is essential for cultivating the German spirit and national pride. Bach`s Christianity and Wagner`s themes from the period before Christ are 2 faces of spiritual Germany that should be admired.

Марш был написан Чайковским в сентябре 1876 года по просьбе дирекции Русского музыкального общества. Сочинение было посвящено борьбе славянских народов Балкан против Османского ига и написано в связи с событиями Русско-турецкой войны. Во время написания музыки, Чайковский называет его «Сербо-русским маршем».
Первое исполнение марша состоялось 5 (17) ноября 1876 года в Москве в симфоническом собрании Русского музыкального общества оркестром под управлением Н. Г. Рубинштейна на концерте в пользу Славянского благотворительного общества.
В произведении использованы музыкальные темы, характерные для народной музыки сербов, а также тема гимна Российской Империи - «Боже, Царя храни!».

"Slave" is a French word, not English. Means "Slavic/Savonic" and it doesn't resemble the French word for "slave" at all. The origin of the word "Slavic" is in the word "slava/слава" which means "glory" in many Slavic languages. In any case, the only original name this piece has is in Russian and it's Сербско-русский марш (Serbo-Russian march) and it honors the friendship between two countries and Russians helping Serbs during the war with Turks and afterwards. Exotic-sounding motives are from Serbian folk music. Russian Imperial hymn "God, Save the Tsar" hints on Russian Empire. Reading discussions about slaves under this video makes one's eyes bleed and one's heart despair.
In Serbia we don't use word 'Slavyani' (slava/glory) for Slavic people, but 'Sloveni'. Because 'sloviti' means 'to speak' (the same language). So Sloveni are the group of people who speak the same language(or similar). I think that is a more precise explanation

Wonderful performance and unique interpretation! By unique I mean this march started much slower (ans softer, as if from a distance) than many other interpretations I am familiar with, but then it built up momentum and quickened the tempo. Yet the faster tempo now also shifted from time to time, seeming to reflect the marchers actual shifts of steps and movements. By the way, someone already mentioned the Imperial Russian Anthem that Tchaikovsky excerpted here. He also used it in other pieces, such as the one commemorating the Imperial Coronation and, of course the "1812" overture. Notice also how he imitated the heavy roles that clarinets and trumpets play in most military bands. Bravo!
Simply magnificient. This is one of my favorite Tchaikovsky's works.

The original name was Serbian-Russian march,but because of political reasons the name was changed.The march is deticaded to serbian and russian soldiers who fought in Serbo- Turkish war in 1800-is.The original composition is stored in some museum in Moscow,i cant rember which.

Indeed, the composition was chosen by the melody of the Russian anthem "God, Guard the Tzar" and three Serbian folk songs: "Sunce jarko, ne sijas jednako", "Prag je ovo milog Srba" and "Jer puscani prah" (the second part of the song "Rado Srbin ide u vojnike" from 3:42 you can also hear melody from Serbian Drina march :)

Excellent work, Maestro Karabanov! This work brings me back to my high school years, since I played it in the junior symphony orchestra. Our version was in G minor and lasted only seven minutes (such is life when you rehearse and play an abridgment).

In the opinion of A. Budjakovski, Tchaikovsky's best march, bravura-pompous character, is the march dedicated to the liberation of the Serbs from the Turkish yoke.

So fatalistic. This captures perfectly the Slavic mind-set of being consigned to one's fate and embracing it. And as a result, it creates a kind of peacefulness in the soul that Anglo-Saxons can't fully embrace or understand. We are all bound for heaven or nothingness, depending on your beliefs. This character trait in many ways makes the Russian, et al., superior in dealing with the finality of existence; although it places them at a disadvantage in other ways.
so that's why this piece always stirs me inside.. i like this piece for the total opposite reason of why it was created for.
Interesting; I've never thought of it this way. I've always seen this piece as overcoming adversity and ultimately triumphing against all odds. There is victory, but it's a bitter victory.

Их аранжировка гитариста Хоффмана несколько резче оригинала, но благодаря ей " Славянский марш" звучит ещё ярче и интереснее и в молодежной среде где эта группа очень популярна..

I was a university student in Leningrad in the Soviet Union in the 70s. I often visited the Finnish railway station in Leningrad, where the express train called the Red Arrow arrived every evening from Moscow. In the 1-2 minutes before arrival, Leningrad greeted those arriving by train with a very beautiful solemn melody over the loudspeakers of the railway station. I haven't been able to find what that tune was since. Almost 50 years have passed since then, but I still often think about him, dream about him. I haven't been there since. Is the tradition still alive? Does anyone know anything about this? Could it have been a fragment of a similarly sublime work by Tchaikovsky?

Tchaikovsky wrote a piece of music that incorporated some theme from the song of the volga boatmen , or at least a very similar melodic passage , does any one familiar with his works know the name of that peice of music ?? let me know please.
