Speaking from the perspective of an imperfect man who has been shown great kindness by my Father in Heaven I am great-full that He has loved me so much, saving me from my sorrows, from my sin. I will die an imperfect man but I do hope to learn from the lessons God has taught me and improve my life daily. I will not forget that when I was alone He was there to lift me. Does it matter if men mock me for speaking for truth because when this life is over I will know the embrace of my Father again.
He's from California and he used to be a Christian. The first time he lived abroad it was in the UK. Though I don't agree with his conclusions, his religion or any other religion, I think he understands the west perfectly well. It's where he comes from. As a Sufist, Hamza Yusuf would, I'm sure, entirely agree with what you say about avoiding the use of violence.
although, i HAVE to disagree on one aspect of this respected sheikh, and that is , for ME, practicing Islam in the West is really really really tough. ... I would go to places like the Gulf/Saudi arabia anyday to protect my imaan. I am sufferring in the west as a muslim.
"If u c a man at a rulers gate, then question his deen." per Imam Al-Azam Abu Hanifa. I didn't know that the great Imam ever said this until i heard Hamza Yusuf quote this teaching of his in one of his speeches. If Hamza Yusuf is the enemy within then he should bear in mind the following verse: "Mighty indeed were the plots which they made, but their plots were (well) within the sight of Allah, even though they were such as to shake the hills! " (14:46)
BBC and other news channels always shows programmes such as this, where peaceful Muslim views are expressed, are always on at late times and never the day time...
@SlowY00 It's the format of the show. It's called 'Hard Talk'. The journalist is meant to be quite harsh and force direct answers out of the guest. The role of the journalist on this show is to be an 'attacker' and not a sympathetic listener. That being said, the only time she really interrupts him is when he gives a cliché portrayal of the West as addicted to drugs, asking him to justify it.
Not at all. If you actually listen he was talking about cultural problems, and he always readily admits the cultural problems in Muslim societies. What he defends are the teachings of Islam and the distortions of Islamic teachings by some Muslims and the cross cultural harm some have done in the name of Islam.
@Viljarism I am the uploader I believe the point he was making was quite profound and she interjected prematurely, perhaps feeling personally aggrieved being a westerner, and restated his observation as a reductio ad absurdum
He is right we in the West can numb our pain and forget about all the problems in the world by going out getting smashed, doing drugs and other "freedoms" that many in the Muslim world do not have. He is spot on!
Recently i come accross some CRITICS made by some muslim that i had never seen doing work for islam such as him . ,here a a withe converted man trying to shear and show the beauty of islam with his fellow white western non muslims. i believe that hamza his a better muslim learned man than those muslims who refute him in public..
Al-Jahiz wrote one of those around 850. It differs from Darwin's theory only in detail, particularly of the operation of natural selection, though he had the outline of it. Ibn Khaldun wrote further on the subject at the end of the 14th century CE. Both were devout Muslims. BTW the British Museum has a copy of al-Jahiz's Kitab al-Hayawan ("Book of Animals") catalogued, but it has been missing for a long time. Last issued to Charles Darwin!
I don't accuse Darwin of nicking this important early medieval manuscript. He must have had the help of one or more academics who could read medieval Arabic. The script is particularly difficult for a modern Arabic speaker. They called them "Arabists" in those days. I think it more likely the culprit was one of them.
@LOOKWITHIN the prophet, saws, also used to say that the arabs, if they followed the religion properly, would be the best believers, so don't generalize..you can't take bits and pieces of the sayings, but you should read widely to get better understandng of the Prophet's way of speaking, what he intended by his speech, etc.
4:09 " ...America on Sept. 11th something very profound happened..." TRANSLATION: We witnessed the first major push towards the accomplishment of a New World Order!
The number of names on a highly classified U.S. central database used to track suspected terrorists has jumped to 875,000 from 540,000 only five years ago, a U.S. official familiar with the matter said. Among those was suspected Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, whose name was added in 2011. The increase in names is due in part to security agencies using the system more in the wake of the failed 2009 attack on a plane by “underpants bomber” Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab in Detroit.
Is it not tragic that men are so divided, many wishing to force their point of view on others. Is this not a sad malady which inflicts the world ,men do not seek understanding but rather joy in shedding the blood of others. Hate is vallued more than the life of an innocent child. I think the very reason why men act so cruelly is because they shut God out of their lives and heed the counsel of men who falsely claim to be serving God but who have no authority to speak for Him.
I think she is being defensive because of his hypocrisy. He begins by attacking the western world for stereotyping Muslims and then turns to do the same against Westerners.
Most of the Muslim world is in Indonesia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. 15% is in sub-Saharan Africa. They strike me as mostly not very concerned about "the west" one way or another, but much more about their own various problems and divisions.
It does nothing of the sort, as you would know if you'd read more than the 2 pages you refer to. You obviously didn't come across the terms ahl al-kitab, usually translated as "people of the book". Please tell us what the Qur'an says about them.
Sounds like you've been reading Harun Yahya's creationist crap. It flies in the face of Islam's long scientific tradition and, in this case, the work of al-Jahiz. I notice that Harun Yahya spends a lot of time slagging off ibn Khaldun, who was a historian relying on the works of scientists, but never seems to mention al-Jahiz, who WAS a scientist. Darwin's first critics accused him of "adopting the Mohammedan idea of evolution". Even they knew about al-Jahiz. Why don't you?
Hamza Yusuf doesn't belong to any "clerical class" (Christian term) "sponsored by Saudi Arabia". HE'S A SUFI, and therefore at the absolute opposite pole from the Wahhabism of the House of Saud's family business, or the only slightly wider range of Salafist-influenced Islam they're willing to fund. Hamza Yusuf comes in for a lot of stick from those quarters. There is yards of their vitriol against him on UA-cam. You need to find out who's who.
@ashburnhouse so does every other abrahamic holy book. The new testament is the most ''peaceful'' one but still... filled with violent imagery, especially when it comes to the trials of Jesus. Life on this earth is violent my friend.
Do you always put words in other peoples mouths? It is a really arrogant and ignorant way of being. Nothing I said alluded to drugs and alcohol being a "good thing". I am referring to the prevalence of drugs and alcohol in western culture and it's use as a form of escapism from the drudgery of everyday living, and work in a highly capitalist environment. Now I hope that clarifies my statement.
"Anger is an opiate for pain." Does anybody else in here thinks Muslims should just start using ANY mind altering substance? I don't think the Yemenis are as pissed at everything.
How can you regurgitate every overused half witted empty rhetoric used by atheists that all of us have heard some 2 million times before, and yet expect that we'll be impressed by your mindless memorizing ability?
That is not an accurate statement. Far from it. A minority of Muslims drink and use drugs. That is a fact throughout the Muslim world and even Muslims in the West. The fact that the Muslims you know drink and use drugs does not mean you're right. I think people tend to twist the truth and manipulate facts to prove themselves right. A little humility would go a long way.
Let's see here. You believe in a man who claimed to have flown through space on a horse who said that the majority of people in hell were women because "they don't appreciate their husbands". You believe that there was another guy and he threw a stick in the water and the sea parted. And you are calling me the child? Between the two of us, who has the childish beliefs here?
It becomes clear she wasn't aware of this mans intelegence.
i have watched this video before the arab revolution and now i am watching it again.... hamza yusuf is an honest man ... thanks for video..
You just make me cry .
May Allah ( SWT ) reward highest Jannah .

Your Video nterview with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf Hanson. Apologies for the quality it's been ripped from VHS Is Very Useful Sharing

if a guy post degrading remarks abt islam n muslims just ignore them.. but if they ask sincere questions, be honest in answers.. be at peace brothers
It was probably recorded off TV to a VHS recorder and then ripped to mpeg. People still use VCRs to record tv shows.

Mashallah. a very clever shaikh. we need ppl lyk him 2 clear up the misconception on islam
well Hamza yusuf started bad but the last question about the west and the drinking problem he nailed the issue well.
May Allah forgive us all

@kaligrs If you judged sheikh Hamza only by that interview then you should really listen to some of his lectures.
Al-Jahiz wrote one of those around 850. It differs from Darwin's theory only in detail, particularly of the operation of natural selection, though he had the outline of it. Ibn Khaldun wrote further on the subject at the end of the 14th century CE. Both were devout Muslims.

No, Mark Hanson did. His name is Hamza Yusuf Hanson.

what happend to the sound ???
And it's only a hadith anyway, not the Qur'an.
its not a coincidence at all.

Did Mathew Perry convert to Islam and change his name to Hamza Yousef?
At least he is using reason, though most of the Muslim world would consider themselves at war with the West (i.e., disagree with him).
lol no you don't call him dump,,,but you would say he is intelligent either.
Most of the Muslim world is in Indonesia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. 15% is in sub-Saharan Africa. They strike me as mostly not very concerned about "the west" one way or another, but much more about their own various problems and divisions.
VHS? 2001? Which 2001?
What your point?
@aladarbaljihad what do you mean kuffar?
Chandler Bing?
@nickhasie
Aamiiin
He isn't.
does it matter?
@ aladar and other negative remarks you should be look in the mirror and think hard about what you say about good men
Why don't you just answer the guy
Only once, are you kidding me?
@miladmeah Please read a book on evolution and learn something about reality. Thank you
It does nothing of the sort, as you would know if you'd read more than the 2 pages you refer to. You obviously didn't come across the terms ahl al-kitab, usually translated as "people of the book". Please tell us what the Qur'an says about them.
Those are not mutually exclusive categories, as I'm sure you know but deny for the purposes of your narrow propaganda.

So both of you are saying Alcohol and Drugs are good then? Interesting, very interesting.
