Have you tried running plex on it? Just got mine. I’m sort of getting mixed opinions on how plex runs. Btw in my case, it will mainly be for storing files manually and plex so no other apps will running in the background except for the plex server
if we use Raid 1 , than size of 2 hdd will be usable ? I used first option and now I have Volume 1 of 1Tb but two hdds of 1tb each but I cant use them all.
RAID 1 mirrors the contents of 1 drive to another therefore having data redundancy and therefore if a drive were to fail, you can replace and rebuild the failed drive with no data loss. If you want to have full use of the 2 HDDs you will have to choose RAID 0 which combines the capacity of the 2 HDD into 1 "large" drive. In summary: What is the difference between RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10? The most common types are RAID 0 (striping), RAID 1 (mirroring) and its variants, RAID 5 (distributed parity), and RAID 6 (dual parity). Multiple RAID levels can also be combined or nested, for instance RAID 10 (striping of mirrors) or RAID 01 (mirroring stripe sets). The above is an extract from Wikipedia
Thank you for this detailed video. I have a question. In this NAS, can I do something like this? I would have a pc and I want to sync a local folder named "XYZ" (or multiple folders) on my PC to the NAS in real time. Which means that any work or edit I do in that folder or folders, it will automatically back that up or sync that in the NAS. Is this possible in DS223j? Thank you.
Adding this comment for the future in case anyone else encounters this issue. After creating the storage pool & volume, my Control Panel was frozen. I did some googling and found that I needed to clear my cache. Note that I am a Mac user running OS Ventura and using Safari. I was able to clear my cache and that seemed to fix the issue.
Such a great video for an absolute newby (me) at this techy stuff. When I try to open from the local drive, it opens it in my Web browser. I can't seem to get it to open in my device's file explorer... Does that matter?
Thank you for the overview, that was very helpful. I'm just not clear of what the benefit of setting up Tailscale is. You said that by using that global IP address, you can now access the NAS from anywhere in the world. But can't you do that anyway through the DSM web app? I was able to access my files while not on my home network without doing this. I'm struggling to understand what the benefit of Tailscale is, and how you use it.
I picked up a 223j for $150 with free shipping from B&H Photo plus purchased two 12TB Seagate Ironwolf "renewed" NAS drives for $100 each on Amazon Prime Day. This video was super helpful to get me up and running. Thanks!
Great tutorial, thanks :D
pure information. Great work.
One setup video started by changing the IP address. What!?!? This is a true beginners guide. Thank you!
Are there any limitations with video playback like 4K UHD? Any storage limitations?
Where did you find File Station after closing the window? I don't have such a folder on my desktop!
can we connect it to wifi?i mean without LAN cable?

I don't like plex. I just store files and let Kodi handle the files
what is the max capacity of this device ?
I believe it’s 36TB I think I saw it on internet one time
$150? But that’s diskless right?
yes 😂
Thank you for this video. Right on time, as I will get my Synology DS223j tomorrow.
you are welcome. hope you got the sale price too! some stores have Black Friday prices already
great video. Got me to order one.
