I watched this on Amazon Prime and I almost cried as the documentary opens with my favourite record of all time, Love is Blind by Nick Holder (which I bought at PDR). My record collection is my prized posession and 90% was purchased at Play De Record. Thank you for the music, for the memories and for shaping my good taste in music!
Yoooo......I feel like I'm part of this history.....raised in St. Jamestown in the 80's-2000's......I was at Eugene's store like twice a week every damn week man!!! This is going to be epic!!! I live in middle of nowhere BC now......but I need to see this.....maybe fly back to TDOT just to catch it at Hot Docs!!! 😀
I loved going every week to buy the records from the stacks of all rejected records from the so called big name Dj's in toronto. That was my method to the madness. Donna was my favorite there.
amazing! I am connected with a venue in the Niagara that does film programming and I can connect you if you are interested in showing the film there - we had a whole crew regularly coming to Toronto from Niagara to go to Play De back in the day. Much love to Eugene and Donna and Grandma and Dave Cooper and Frankie Gunns and, and, and the whole Play De Record Family!
I remember going to the store when it was BRAND NEW wayyy back in the early 90's heyday of the store. I used to love and hate going to the store, cause it was always PACKED and tiny with no room to move about. Legendary store. There was even a dj who would 'play de record' for you before you bought it. Used to get some nice white label promos there.
Such a dope documentary. The soundtrack needs to be pressed on wax!
I just watched it on Prime and what a great story, learned so much. I should visit the store one of these days.
Just watched this on Prime. Incredible.
Finally some proper history of Toronto. This was my era
Spent many many hours digging for beats. Miss that place

It’s in many festival theatres, and selling out every time! An incredible film . A perfect documentary! Deserves a Netflix release!
This is the era of Toronto Hiphop that RAISED ME! Can't wait to see the full thing (GO NEIL ACHARYA!)
Thanks Masia, hope you get to see it.
Eugene is a legend. The Jungle and Hip Hop were always on point.
Long live Play De Record!
