Robert McFerrin, baritone
Robert McFerrin Sr. (March 19, 1921 -- 24 November 2006) was an American opera singer who was the first African American male to sing at the New York Metropolitan Opera. He is also the father of the Grammy Award-winning conductor-vocalist Bobby McFerrin.
One of the first great male standard-bearers!
I never knew that the father of jazz singer *Bobby McFerrin* was a great opera singer.
He provided the singing voice for Sidney Poitier in the movie version of "Porgy and Bess" back in the 1950's.
It explains the origin of Bobby's immense talent.
Mr. McFerrin and my piano teacher at Chicago Musical College were classmates which is how I found out about him as the first black male at the Metropolitan. So impressive was his singing that both Robert Merrill and Leonard Warren came backstage to congratulate him at his debut.
Robert McFerrin was an exceptional talent in an era that also had Leonard Warren, Robert Merrill, Robert Weede and a young Cornell MacNeil. I am so pleased to see this video to help keep the memory of real singing alive! And to think today that Placido Domingo is singing Rigoletto.....vergonia
Incredible! This is as good as it gets. A performer rightfully deserving to be mentioned alongside Bastianini, Warren, Protti, Gobbi and all the other great Rigolettos
Great Baritone Robert Mcferrin. He was in Rio’ s famous Municipal Theater. Unforgettable!
I wish there were more recordings of this amazing man and his amazing voice!
Robert McFerrin made four LPs, none of which is currently available, also one 78. Parnassus Records is about to publish a CD set, "Black Swans at Mid-Century" which will have McFerrin in a live performance of "Aida." Next year we are hoping to put out a full CD of his singing; Bobby is cooperating with us.
Holy, Jesus! I am speechless..... WOWWW!... I .....WOWWW! I.....WOWWWW! Never mind! This is fantabulous!
I had the pleasure of hearing him live in a recital. Just a huge sound and a true Verdi baritone.
I love "Rigoletto" and that is one of the best parts of the opera. So full of emotions... Robert McFerrin sings it beutifully. I only wish there was a longer fragment available on youtube.
I was just looking at his entry in wiki and it is mentioned that he was considered "underrecorded." He didn't make many recordings, his career at the Met was relatively short. According to Wiki, he didn't believe he had much job security.
He was also the voice of Porgy in the movie. Sidney Poitier was the face on the screen.
Such a beautiful baritone voice
I wish there were more recordings of him - period.
holy crap! what a voice o_o
i wish there were more recordings of him on youtube
Big beautiful voice !!!
He's phenomenal!
Wow what a voice
Brilliant.
Quelle belle surprise ! On en redemande, merci...
I bought an old hymnal at a used book store recently. When I opened it up, I saw that it had belonged to a black congregation in Washington DC, and I found a little flyer or ticket stub or something advertising a benefit concert with him singing
This great man trained me!
Impressive, to say the least! Would love to hear more from this artist!
Rest In Peace!
Outstanding.
I never knew that Bobby's dad was this man, either KalimbaKid! How exciting!
Yes, and he even sang a tenor part in Trouble Island
his voice is so warm
You got that right.. amazing!
Thank you for posting this. Even an excerpt of the first black male to sing at The Met is better than nothing. Do you know of any whole discs, or pirates of his performances, that are available?
You're older than I am so perhaps you have a personal contemporary remembrance. I heard all of these guys only later on records. Winters sang the first complete Porgy on records. I had that set at one time. Tibbett only recorded excerpts as did Robert Merrill. I believe the Gershwins wouldn't allow full stage performances with white singers.
This is so wonderful. Great to finally hear him!
You shouldn't be surprised. Listen to this clip. He's very, very good. He's better than Todd Duncan or Lawrence Winters - the first Porgy on stage and the first Porgy on records. He had a helluva voice.
He wa the first black mle singer at the met
This great singer trained me in St Louis! His training enhance my ability and skills to write greeting cards! He even autographed one of my cards! He helped me over come my sturring problem! I met Bobby Mcferrin in concert in St Louis! I carry a rare picture of him in my wallet! Funny, I can still hear his voice when I sing those vocal scales! He told me how President Kennedy jumped hearing him hit a high note at a concert!
Please remove the Ninon Vallin video I accidentally posted as a video response.
1,,
So that's what my voice called...
he kind of looks like ludacris(rapper) but he looks way better and has way more talent RIP
So the piece just magically wrote itself? You MUST give credit to the Verdi! Nowhere did you indicate this.
Perhaps he or she made the assumption that most of us already knew it was Verdi. An honest mistake which can be addressed with civility. Thank you for posting, dphmichigan.
