Very true. As a side note, I use a fifties radio as an amp sometimes, it's valve driven and sounds amazing.

My first amp, as a teenager, was a 50s valve radio bought from a local auction and hacked to be an amp because that's all I could afford.

I almost bought a Zoom G6 but went with the Line 6 Pod Go Wireless instead. I've always been a fan of Zoom products since the early days of the 505. Zoom always brings a lot to the party. I still have my G5n and can't bring myself to get rid of it.
At any rate, being able to simplify things is a nice option to have. The G6 sounded really good.

It is definitely worth upgrading the HX effects, but true, be careful with it, and follow the instructions properly. Most new releases include new (or even fixed effects, like the RAT), and nice new features such as favourites which allow you to save an effect with your own settings, and don't have to stick to the factory settings when you add it to a new preset. So, don't stick with the old version, just because you're afraid of the upgrade process.

Good demo. I own a G6 and a pedalboard. I haven't substituted my board for the G6 yet. The G6 is very good and I was most impressed when I inserted either my Fulltone Fulldrive or Nobels ODR mini in a S/R slot. I reckon I will gig with my G6 and use an insert for drive. Keep up the good work.

Great video and playin´ as always by Dave!...I have been a long time zoom user, still love their products...I use Zoom g5n which I really like and also have some zoom g2 in my " individual pedals boards ", for effects... and the g2 definitely adds "some color" to the sound, so that's one reason why it may seem similar in comparison... I find a lot more difference when you use just individual pedals, and the sound is definitely more..."clear"...-as you say, neither better nor worse-...Anyway I think the best use of units like the g6 are DI for recording or monitoring, using amp modeling ... and if you don´t like that kind of "dark sound" that zoom uses to give, just put the "exciter" effect in the chain, it gives a lot of bright and presence

I initially owned a Zoom GFX 707 II for 20+ years and loved the sounds available however, after said 20+ years of use it finally gave up on me. My wife very kindly purchased the G6 as a Christmas present and i have to say the sounds are amazing. Having listened to your comparison though i'd have to agree with a few others in the comments. For the Dirty clean i prefer your pedalboard (amazing sound by the way) however, for all others id go with the G6. I've spent many hours messing about and generally having fun with mine and it would have to be something extra special to tear me away from it.

Dave layers those looper tracks with timing so well! The blend of it is fantastic. 🎼🤘 The opening jam was beautiful!! 🎸I had a Zoom 505 back in the day and enjoyed it. I have the same Zoom G2.1u on my board as you do and it just works so well. There is so much you can do with it. The pedal board wins to my ears, but it is so close a lot of people would not notice the difference. Zoom makes great pedals for an affordable price. Comes down to personal choice, one pedal to do it all or a board full of fun!! How much money you got??? 🤘🎼😁

I preferred the pedal board for the first two examples. But the last example the Zoom was more articulate the pedal board became muddy as it was driven harder. Maybe try running echo / reverb effects etc through the effects loop? it may not overdrive the front end of the amp as much? That's the problem they mainly had with multi effects units but they are definitely improving year on year, And they even come with effects loop now too.

pedalboard; the zoom is fun and they've come along way since my 505 - which still goes - nothing digital compares to the sound of single analog pedals to my ear and ease of use, don't have to worry about software updates, failed boards, can fix it yourself basically. That and I don't believe in digital univibe lol. The digital stuff just lacks a certain feel you get from individual components and moving air. I plugged in a Pod Go to the Powercab the other day, it's a bit of fun is what I told my boss, but that's about it for me. Same with the Helix. There is an ideal customer for it though so can't knock it too hard.

I actually sold nearly all of my pedals because..well. Cost and inconvenience and got the Zoom G3XN for the front and an MS-70CDR for the loop. Doesn't sound as good as my single pedal setup but it's close enough for me. :P
I did keep my MXR Carbon Copy Delay though. I'm never letting that thing go.

I think I prefered the G6 - which is quite interesting. I had the older G3 and I liked it didnt love it (like most zoom stuff, I found the reverb/delay/chorus outstanding though - and that thing felt like a tank). Now to me this tracks - I often prefer digital emulation as I feel like I can control it better than the analogue original - take fuzz for example, my favourite effect, but I often find myself using digital versions because I feel I can control and anticipate it more (that might sound really weird honestly)
It speaks volumes that a multi-fx can go toe to toe with a board built on the bringing together of different parts for their own specific purpose, vs that mfx that isn't built with any particular combos in mind!
I'll say this - and why I use very limited pedals - while I know I prefer the pedal sounds, I like the multifx for what I think their best feature is - that they are just that multiple effects. Be it the M5/M9 stuff or the DL's (and other line 6 bits), the helixs, zooms (multistomps, gX series) etc - hell even at the sort of £100-ish range - you really can just get access to a bunch of stuff. I personally use the Katana (to get my core "always" on sounds - a bit like how Dave does the amp + golden plexi, I just add some basic room reverb and light delay to that) - then use the line 6 m9 + a m5 (with expression pedals) to do the rest of the work (I do use a NUX boost pedal, that thing is insanely good).

Awesome. I wouldn't have believed them being so close - to me anyway. I preferred the pedal board generally, just had a 'fuller', 'richer', 'ampier' soundrange to it, a bit like the difference between some valve amps and some solid state (note I say 'some'). That said, I'd be happy with either and you do, as a consumer, or gigging, have to factor in the practical aspects - cost, space, ease of use, etc. Mind, like a lot of people, I may be coloured by my age and prejudice! You know, old school valve amp any day, as much for the look and 'spiritual' feel if you like. Similarly with things that look like computers rather than the more mechanical look and feel of the pedal board. Incidentally, I have the Headrush MX5 and I'm becoming a convert! Go figure. Great piece again Dave and nice to see these.

Zoom sounds slightly crisper (less analogue than the pedals... nothing like stating the obvious 😂 ).
I've a Boss ME70 - metal casing - strong as anything - would be interested in a similar comparison of one of those. I think that the main issue with a MFX is in setting up the various patches to bring in a decent effect - though the Boss can be used as a simple set of stomp boxes

Whilst my distortion pedals may sound a bit fuller my 10 year old Zoom MS-50g doesn't sound bad and has the benefit of remembering all my favourite settings.

I like more the cleanish sound of your pedalboard because It's more brilliant and twangy. On the contrary for distortions I prefer the G6 because I think the sound is more tamed, tight and not too noisy. But in a mix probably everything changes, so don't take me too literally.

  • @christopherguzzi1316

The real pedal setup had a bit more clarity and separation of elements, the multi effects just a bit more homogenized almost like a recording of a recording of the real pedal board. Both sounded great. The real question is what other sounds can you get from the multi effects unit that you can't get from your pedal board.☺☺☺

  • @thesullivanstreetproject
    @thesullivanstreetproject 2 роки тому

I REALLY wanted to like the G6 better because, hey, cheaper alternative to lots of pedals. Unfortunately, the pedal board wins in my opinion.
The semi-cleans were super close to me, and I’d happily use either one, but the pedal board had the slight edge.
For the distortion, I MUCH preferred the tightness of the G6. The pedal board to me sounded kind of harsh and a little to uncontrolled if that makes sense. But at the same time, the G6 sounded like it needed som EQing to make it sound as good as the pedal board as far as sonic range goes.
The DS2 just sounded better than the G6 all around, but the G6 wasn’t horribly behind and sounded pretty good to my ears, save for the same boxy EQ issue, which I may not have even noticed without the side-by-side comparison.
I agree with Dave that the G6 would definitely not be a bad choice, and it’s probably what I would buy for budget reasons. I wonder if adding an EQ pedal would help some of the “boxiness” of the G6.

Question : The Zoom does really come close but sounded a bit more airy to me if there was some extra delay/reverb on it (was it?). The pedalboard sounded better (prefable) to my ears, more direct and organic, less boxy. Anyway but for on the road and gigs... I bought myself a Zoom G5n also because of Dave's wonderfull videos and because I always seem to have cable issues with my pedal board lately. So I thought if the Zoom can come this close or as close as 90-95% and is a more reliable compact and flexible solution, let's try out giging with the Zoom. I am still in practice mode at the moment but what are your experiences with giging (in both cases Zoom or Perdalboard), and what are your pro's and con's on this? Ans in the case with a Zoom, would you still use an amp or not? Thanks again Dave, great playing and usefull practical videos, keep goin with the good work, love the JF stuff, it helps me out a lot

Well for me it was the pedals all day, thats not to say that the Zoom isnt good because its a great bit of kit, but the pedals to me had more soul. Hard to explain but the pedals had a more open clarity to them, to my ears anyways. Overal cost and space wise I see why folk go for a multi, but I just prefer the ease of tweaking pedals without trying to step through multi menus. each to his / her own I guess. Great video and playing as always Dave, awesome.

Based on those examples, the zoom sounded leagues ahead of your pedal board. It was crisper, cleaner, more definition and easier to hear. You hit the nail. That's the point of multi effects etc. To sounds as a finished product. People compare them to the raw sound of this and that forgetting that what makes it to the album is ALWAYS an extremely processed sound that's nowhere near what they can actually hear in the room.
The Marshall or Mesa or DS2 that you hear on any album is a Marshall > speaker > microphone and ton of processing. These multi FX should sound like a recording, not like demo.

I've always thought multi effects are better value and they seem to get better all the time, you can pay £70+ just for a looper pedal these days. Are they as robust as a pedal board?, probably not. Dave do you own any classical guitars?. If so how do you stop the high e string from constantly snapping?. Mine just when ping whilst in its case at 12.25PM the other night and I was looking around my room thinking what on earth was that, lol. I hate having anything between my guitar and an amp - that's what not having Dave's talent does for you. For me it's like trying to walk with undone shoelaces - constantly tripping over ! It's why I like Marshalls so much as they give me all I want. I do tolerate my looper out of necessity but that's about it.

Hi, Dave! I have zoom g6 for more than a year and was using your Dave Land preset with my old tube amp. Today I ordered mini silver jubilee with its 2x12 matching cab. Also I wanted to buy DS-2, Pastfx chorus ansamble and other pedals but I'm afraid that if I use those pedals with zoom g6, the zoom will change the sound from pedals. Have you tried using DS-2 or other JF pedals with zoom g6?

Hi Dave, hope you are doing well. I'll add my opinion :) In all fairness, I liked the sound of the cleanish tone of the pedalboard, however I liked the distortion on the G6 for some reason. As you said, nothing matches the DS2, its in a different league.. the G6 or anything else for that matter, cannot sing like the DS2, period. 1 more thing I'd like to add, I completely agree with you on this.. the G6 sounds so much better than the G5n which I own, and sometimes feel, I should have waited for the G6 before buying the G5n. However, the deal that I got on the G5n, does not make me regret even a bit buying it :)

What gets me, so many (guitarists) bands today use silly 10 watt amps and something like a Line 6 effects board and that is it, with a mic feed up to the mixing desk out through the PA and sound absolutely horrible. Advantages you can fit it all into a ruck sack on your back whilst riding your bike but seriously? Oh and it makes change over between bands a 5 minute job not 45 and no lugging around of amps and cabs, its now complete in a unit the size of a Doc Martins boot box. Todays bands are killing themselves in the foot being lazy using the venue PA. They are no longer performing there doing a show, they way as well use a backing track and mime, it would probably sound better !!

I gave up on multi FX boards a few years ago in favor of single pedals for a single job. Multi boards give me too much options that I can never settle on and find myself endlessly tone searching and configuring instead of playing. Arghhhh I HATE THEM.

A used G6 just popped up for a good price in my area...I am thinking about buying it. 2 question's. 1--You already mentioned how easy it is to program. Can I do everything I need without a computer? Apparently you need a computer to delete files from the Looper??? And that requires a minimum Windows 10 or 11, I just found out my old Chrome Laptop is hopelessly inadequate for that....Which leads me to question 2---Do you use an SD card?....(or is it SDHC...SDHX...SDHU???....Micro?...I didn't realise there was so many) ....If 1 card can hold up to 2 hours, I suppose I could buy a few.......What are your experience's with the Looper? Do you store your loops with it? Have you tried deleting any?....Thank you, sorry for so many question's.......Sorry 1 more......haha.....The plastic. If you had to compare the durability to an old Zoom GFX 707 (which I still own) is it about the same, or worse. O.K.Thats It, no more question's Cheers Dave.Thank you.

I like the pedalboard better, but the Zoom gets VERY close. The audience probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Truth be told, you could plug into a potato and it would sound great! Have you ever gotten a DS2 tone from a Katana? Do you think you will review the Line 6 Catalyst amp?
