For anyone having troubles understanding symbolic interactionism. It was a term coined by George Herbert Mead, who stated that basically there are different facets to the way we communicate in society. The way we communicate is based on premises. We take an object in society and we give them meaning (therefore, we symbolize an object), and based on this meaning, we then interact within society based on these meanings. A good example that I use are dogs. Some people love dogs, others may be afraid of dogs, but it's almost entirely based on their interaction with dogs. This example is more incorporated in Herbert Blumer's definition of Symbolic Interactionism, where he states " symbolic interactionism rests on three premises: that human beings act toward things on the basis of the meanings of things have for them; that the meaning of such things derives from the social interaction one has with one's fellows; and that these meanings are handled in, and modified through, an interpretive process" (Blumer 1986). Therefore, symbolic interactionism is NOT just about the meaning we give something but rather, the meaning that we continue to give it, as most things in society are subjective and can change. I.e., the meaning we give something may change based on the experience we have, therefore, the way we interact with others may change along with it (this could be incorporated in psychology as well; exposure therapy for example).

Social theories should answer questions like (1) What is Society? (2) Why society? (3) What is the goal of human existance as individuals and Society?

Nice video... Useful for sociology students... I was wondering if I could borrow it in order to upload it with Spanish subtitles... (not for economic, but academic reasons).
    :)

Could you recommend me some literature about the relation of cultural studies (which is a critical theory) and constructivism? could you say something about cultural constructivism and its relation to communication theory?
