So much respect for being genuine and showing us moments of you learning. So good dude ✊🏼
I think this is what anyone in the industry should learn on day one! I learn that as an intern with Bob Katz, his book is incredible. I will highly say the miniDSP and the REW are essential to get the room analyze, then EQ your speakers for your room.
A pro engineer came to my studio to help me with my setup my gear and help me better my speaker placement. After finding the best speaker placement using various acoustic measurements with programs like REW , We did speaker calibration with Sonarworks and my subwoofer. The best thing I ever did. My mixes translate seamlessly everywhere else outside of my studio. my monitors are CLA (NS-10’s) and my second pair of monitors are the old Legendary Mackie HR824 with a Mackie Subwoofer.
the new Mackies are fantastic value proposition. I learned to mix on HR824, those mixes still sound great today.
I love these types of videos! Makes me want to re-tune my room!
I never ceases to amaze me , Studio guys rarely consider this when setting upa studio. Commercial studios yes, but rarely in high end home studios . In the Live sound world , in most cases using SMART, We do this EVERY SETUP on EVERY Venue every new day.
Great stuff, Andrew. Definitely a great video for learning and re-evaluating my room and helping me be aware of some things. Thanks.
thanks so much for the great insight! can't wait until I'll be at the point of calibrating my setup. this will certainly help...
Insanely valuable and entertaining content. The generosity is off the chart. Thank you.
I can't wait for part 2. I know my room sound crazy, I'd be so interested to run the same test myself.
Love this video! My guess is that your space could benefit from some bass trapping. If I remember correctly the insulation in your fabric wall system is only 2-3 inches deep, which is fantastic for high frequencies but wouldn’t do a whole below 80hz. While you may be able to EQ out some peaks and nulls below 100, that will only fix your room’s bottom end problem in the frequency response, not the time domain. If you pull up a waterfall plot on your room sweeps after you insert your corrective EQ, you will likely see that your frequency response may be relatively flat, but notes below 100hz are ringing much longer than the high frequencies. This causes bass guitars and kicks to lack definition and separation, and sound flabby. Only way to fix your room in the time domain is with deeper bass trapping. Or if you know exactly what your problem frequencies are, you can target those frequencies with membrane bass traps. @MusicCityAcoustics sells tuned membrane traps and has a great UA-cam channel, they’re located in Nashville and I bet would love to do a video with you about it.
I’ve been using Yamaha HS8’s and their 8 in. Sub. Maybe this is a simplistic take, but there’s a ‘center setting’ on each Vol. knob, the sub, too. I’ve used a dB counter and everything sounds good and even, to me.
I had the pleasure of seeing monitors be tuned using the Genelec 1 series SAM technology. It made a world of difference. The frequency sweep most def will reveal an issue with the desk and sound bouncing off of it.
Dude with a sub ofcourse you do a crossover, thats basics but its all good your learning with a massive advantage of awesome gear to start. cheers , I still have alot to learn myself . I wish i had this guy to help me with my setup
Andrew, I like your optimism on the flat room. Ha!!!! Look forward to part 2. Keep up the good work.
Oh dude, this is amazing. I've been REWing my current room. It's not as bad as I expected, but the ringing in the low end is pretty substantial, and there's a null exactly where the kick drum sits. I knew this, and can work around it, but wow is it a pain. Good news is I'll be out of this room and into a much more manageable one in (hopefully) less than a month.
Honestly, there's such a huge amount to learn about acoustics, there's no shame in just plugging things in and going for it. If you get good results, then you get good results. Everyone loves to voice their opinion, and some people seem to seek validation through criticizing. If you're enjoying what you're doing and getting good results, then you're doing nothing wrong. Thanks for being so open!
I would almost bet you have some sort of dip around 150-200Hz or so. And that it's due to the distance between the floor and the speaker (which is more or less the same in most studios...). The first reflection that goes to the floor and then to your ear will create this massive (or less massive) cancelling together with the direct sound around (if I remember correct from setting up my studio?!) that 200Hz mark. I also had i rather large dip around 700Hz in my last setup but that went away when I rebuilt my place =) Looking forward to the continuing of this setup video. Great!
Love Brian!!! A frequency wizard.
this is so interesting i love this stuff! thanks !!!
Cool and informative. My speaker set up til a month ago were Rokit 5s. But I blew both the tweeters. Mixing too loud. I think I'm gonna jump up a size to 7s or 8s probably Adam Audio
As a home theater enthusiast and former FOH, getting a cheap miniDSP Umik-1 and learning REW has been amazing. Now you can have data to help you improve the freq response of the system. Sometimes you need to use EQ other time it can be solved by changing placement.
Can’t wait for the next video and the method for correcting the room eq, I’ve been using SoundID for correcting my room but the problem comes when I want to do analog summing mixer, I have to come back to Logic in order to use SoundID to correct the sound, which is a pain in the neck. Any idea solution?
Here in my home studio I use Ableton to split the frequencies between my Kali LP6 and my Sub. Everything concentrates in the loopback input inside ableton and it sends the chanels for each type of speaker. It's a little crazy, but it works just fine (and, more importantly, it's easy to use). I got a max of 6dB peak and dip in the lower mids and mids in the overall frequency response of my room, but my sub, bass and highs are pretty consistent (nothing more than 3dB). I'll make a video about it anytime.
Cmon always say yes this guy knows take all the help he will lend u
My home studio is in my dinning room next to the kitchen, I use Event monitors. I trust my ears around them because i have been using them close to 15 years now. I do my mixes from this room together with my Slate VSX Headphones and Tonal balance 2 my clients are always happy.
Great video! Composer here, but also mixing engineer as I produce my own tracks. About my own monitor experience, I have a really small room but I'm such a nerd about sound that I spend days to get my speakers sounding flat. I started using a calibrated microphone and REW. I'm not into software correction so I bought a mastering DAC for my stereo speakers (RME ADI-2 DAC FS). To be fair, it does sound better than my Apollo x6. After some knob tweaking at the back of my 2.5 way, I just had to finish to flatten the curve with a 7 bands integrated EQ. I have a $3500 speaker setup, and I feel like at home when I listen to some $40K monitoring. Next step would be a bigger room, but that would mean to do everything again from scratch too :p
Your studio is amazing 😍
im using yamaha hs5's with the hs8 sub and sonarworks is a must on all my master chain
Having worked in system design for home audio- specializing in 2ch analog- it blows my mind about the huge gaps in knowledge that aren’t being shared
Brian is the man. Super pumped to know that dude.
Legends!
This I could watch all day. This is what distinguishes an engineer to a music-maker. Great to hear Andrew admit he just plugged the thing in and ran..
There is always the balance of setting up gear ergonomically, to where it should be acoustically. I know I do it wrong, but I bounce between headphones [ using the Oceanway waves plugin] and my Tannoy Reveals. I have another speaker set with 15 woofers , vintage Marsland home speakers from the 60's fed from an Ashly MOS FET big amp [channel 7/8 from my interface]. So I can get both pairs rocking if need be. I use those [Marsland] as my sub to check, but only for a moment, as I don't want my ears to get used to them, they have a horrible mid. I then have another [third] stereo feed into 2 electronic drum wedge amps through a Mackie mixer. That is essentially for live rehearsing. I don't really now what I am doing, but I have reference points I know and loosely trust. I do have another system to check, and that is in my airstream mobile studio, where I can check mixes through the on board NS10's. The trailer has a crazy bass response in the rear, where there are small Mackie monitors. If I put my head in the right place the trailer, it will reveal the sweet spot. This is such a dark art!. Thanks Andrew.
Find Jesco from Acoustics Insider. I’m sure he’d love to do a collab with your studio series. He’s humble and approachable and FULL of all of the vital info someone with Trio’s on sound anchors should know!! :)
He’s got a channel and would be such a wonderful segue from home studios to everything vital when it comes to optimal set up! At the very least, his info will help you and anyone else.
Inches matter. Placement to the mix position is everything. How it looks or what is right on paper (rules) means nothing. 50hz is 23ft. Requires 6-16 inches of absorption. Subs can cause more problems than they solve because of phase, time, placement and crossover. SBIR is real - You may get a better response as close to the front wall as possible without the sub even though it’s nice to be able to get behind the speaker.
So much to grasp, but tending to it with good intel will really get the best out of a room. Cheers!
This is a great video! I'm going to be moving my little hobby bedroom studio to a hobby basement studio. The catch is, the ceiling is only 6 feet up. I'm 5'10" so I kinda fit. The room will be larger in footprint. I do know that the acoustics will be drastically changed and I also think that having a sub will be detrimental. I don't have one now. My monitors are Kali LP6's and also a pair of Edirol MA-15Ds. And Sennhieser HD280 PRO headphones. I'ts gonna be a challenge but I'm up to it!
BRIAN IS A LEGEND!!!
Very interesting and fun video!
Thanks Laney!
yooo omg this is so cool!!!
mostly could be phase shift between the 2 speakers on high frequency, they make fight between the speakers :), it's suits to use %50 linear phase eq
Really interesting video!! But can you spring for as tripod for filming. It was like being on a boat for parts of this!!
Andrew. Bjg fan. I have focals set up in my studio and they’re great. Just when i ran pink noise few weeks ago i noticed too that my right monitor is 0.5db louder than the left one. I don’t have a trim on the back of the monitors but are there any inexpensive monitor controllers that have a trim? Always if possible passive ones. Unfortunately can’t afford a grace tho.
"Is that a *20* dB dip??" 😂😂♥... Looking forward to part 2 😉
Can you share a little more on the sub and how it is wired? And configured? Is the sub just on the Focals? Or both the NS-10ms and Focals? I have a similar setup, but I also include small bookshelf speakers, and curious if the crossover point of the sub would change with each setup? Last question, how did he change the crossover point of the sub. Thanks!!!
I’ve been struuuuugling with the new studio space I moved into. Running the Focal Shape 65s out of an Apollo 8x and all the bass develops at the back of the room (around 4 meters from the desk). It’s a wide room as well So mixing has its challenges and have had to go back to using headphones just to get some sort of comparable mixes to my old room. Problem is the landlord won’t allow any treatment to the walls haha.
cant you hang panels? if not just build a ceiling to wall panel and leave it standing on the floor. or buy those cylinders that are bass traps, they stay usually in the corners
@@tiagogomes4114 yea I’ll probably have to build something. It’s in a building that has many rooms for musicians but they won’t let us do much. Moving out early next year so that may fix it haha. Just tough to mix clients work when you don’t trust the room
Brian!!!!! Come fix my room!!! Please!
Brian is the best!!! Brilliant and a great friend. So glad you guys did this! He flew in the week after we shot the “why did you buy a console” video and my room has never sounded this good. He did Zane and Judah’s room as well! Incredible…
Hi Andrew. What calibration software has been used in the video?
Thanks for the video! Good info about crossover points with subs. I just picked up a Trinnov ST2, mic and remote. I haven’t hooked it up yet, but I bet something like that would help alot with all of this as it also corrects for phase and time aligning. All the reviews I have seen says that it really speeds up the process, thats why I got it. Get to where I want, faster.
I have a Canon R6 and I think you shoot with that and/or R5. One thought from my perspective is on an ultrawide lens, the IBIS makes the sides of the frames look all wonky. I wonder if when ultrawide and handheld, shut off the IBIS, just a thought.
Same. Waiting on mjne to get delivered. Would like to know how it works out for you
@@Ifelovv cool. The la remote just showed up yesterday. It was on backorder for months. It seems super well built. I hated spending that kind of money, but at the same time I know it will help so much.
@@charlienelson2395 wow nice. Would really love to connect. I opted out of the la remote because I have a grace m905 already. The la remote wouldve been only beneficial to change presets but research shows most people stick to one preset. I figure if I need to change, I'll just do it on the desktop app. Cost me an extra few seconds maybe
@@Ifelovv I know what you mean. I was on the fence for a long time. I currently have a lynx hilo going into an spl monitor controller. I like that the spl can switch l to r as I have hearing loss in one ear and I can easily swap stereo to check frequencies I boost too much with the other ear.
The la remote will allow me to set up a preset to do that as well as set up a preset to check mid-side. I also like that it will remove clutter and analog cable runs and be sleeker, plus I can recoup a little when I sell the spl.
Aside from the money, The only downside for me is switching to second monitors as I run a sub and the st2 only has four outputs. So I am running aes to it and switching to the mixcubes via the hilo.
Looking at the grace m905, I think you dont need the la remote either.
Reach out to Grace and see if the web app is something offered with the m905. The m908 I use has it and it is a beautiful thing to use via web to dial in things. Again not sure if they offer it for the m905 yet. - sent you a PM on Facebook on some things as well.
Seeing videos like this just makes me wish i had money to get nicer speakers and a simple setup to have better control of my sound in my room. My setup is a gamer streaming setup that has nothing spectacular in it and probably a mess. So would love to expand it further.
I have a Studiolive 64s Console and as default it is set at 48,000 . Should I change it to 44,100 since almost everything I work on is set at that ?
I mainly use it in my home studio for Studio One 6 DAW and recording my drums , Mixing etc.
Great Video !
Yay🎉
Lol that 20 db dip that was my same reaction when I measured my room
I got a trinnov to address all that stuff. Bass management, room eq, phase and time alignment. I think it'll transform your room
- what’s the thing that you know back and forth?
- John Mayer
(plays Vultures)
god bless u, my friend
Low playback volumes also help very good
How my work translates at all is nothing less than a miracle. I'm afraid to know the truth. Lol. Can not wait for part 2.
Hey dows anybody have any idea what software/plugins were used as a spl meter on the computer when measuring the pink noise?
What freq response test system did you use ?
Hi, i had a doubt. How come your right speaker was louder than the left because even i have felt that. Also how do you tackle that? @Andrew masters
his laugh at you around 2:50 is priceless lmao
I wish I can get a hook up like that.
Nice.
"is that a 20db dip" im crying lmao
I just mix with headphones. Do you do this full time?
🙏🏼
Listening to their conversation I'm realizing how f@cked my room is. Lol! Thanks for sharing Andrew, super informative.
I would like to create a studio from scratch right.. I want to run FL Studio and Pro Tools at the same time but I want to feed Pro Tools Live Information from FL Studio. So basically, while the artist is recording I would like to work on the beat or have my producers work on it.. what equipment is needed or how can I achieve this?.. any help would be appreciated.
“Is that a 20db dip?…” 😂
Does anyone know what mic they used for the measurements? thx!
wow
excruciating
👌
Nice content again. Love the videos. Just a feedback… Your camera man needs more steady hands, or a good gimbal. Image is always shaking too much. Thank you for producing those videos.
very informative! thanks!! p.s. your console chair noise is "special" ! lol You might want to take it out in the garage and get at it with some silicon spray ;P
Gosh darn it.. a part 2 wth
What gear was he using at the beginning
this is why i buy genelec with GLM pack
“John Mayer fanboy has his studio tuned.”
What software is he using for measurements?
🏆🏆🏆
Bm15a, that's what I've been using for years now.
Did it sound the same after you removed all the camera lights? lol- I wonder if those huge light make a difference in the sound.
Hey man, curious: Why the tape over the Yamaha NS-10 logo?
They are the avantone cla10s. And the logo looks really dumb. So I put some gaffers tape on it, and it looks better haha . Really great speakers though!
I am soooo glad I just went with a Genelec SAM/GLM setup lmaooo
Do you still have/use all the warm audio 1073 cones
Use 12 channels of them everyday! They're awesome.
@@AndrewMasters ok cool And thank you 🙏 for the dope content
My process for reducing the room’s impact on my mix, I first get the balance right on my studio monitors (volume and pan). I then go to my open back mixing/mastering headphones (Shure SRH1840) to get the rest of the mix done. My studio is in an extra bedroom in my basement and I don’t want to change too much of the room structure; I did put up some treatment but nothing drastic. My mix and mastering seems to translate well in the car with the EQ set flat.
Well I just moved into a new rented space and whenever I hit the note C, everything goes BOOM like the walls are gonna fall off..so there's that......
What's the software y'all used?
Trinnov ST2 Pro. Lots of money, but worth every penny.
Another Brian fanboy here 🙋🏼♂️
Super FLAT!!! 20dB dip !!!! LOL
what song do you know well ?. Plays Vultures .. immediately i pressed the like button
What about just using Sonarworks man? 1/2 db, I could not hear the difference ever, specially if I listen loud all the time
che el logo de este canal no es identico a el de mueva records?
Awesome, but what is going on with the camera?
20db dip, sounds about right 😂
bump in the low mids
I need someone like him to come by an tune up my rack and pro tools
I thought Focal used the skin of Unicorns to make their cones... 🤣
Great video, please buy a gimbal though
Can I have a Brian too? Please? 😅
If you ever want to screw with a musician or sound guy here's how... Years ago I was invited by Rick Neilson (Cheap Trick) to take a look at his home studio in Rockford, IL. It was a small room filled with gear and barely enough room for two people to stand up in. I'd learned long before to never touch the controls on a mixing board when my father's girlfriend worked at Warner Records in Tuluca Lake, CA so I sat down in his chair behind the mixing board and moved my hands real quick towards the sliders and knobs and said "This so cool! I've always wanted to play with one of these!" and he about shit his pants! I couldn't help but to bust up laughing at him but he didn't find it near as funny as I did.
8 guitars is ideal? Dang, my control room has 13 right now (but no cymbals) with 8 more outside it. Maybe I should mix outside.
@Official_AndrewMasters__. haha this is the laziest scam post I've ever seen. Hit me on the "name above"
