Thanks Josh. I pass on your videos to anyone that will listen. I recently bought my 80 year old father a uke… Brain health never too late!

Great summary. I paused and read your paper and then finished your Webcast. I'll buy your book too. I'm a school psychologist and so this kind of stuff really appeals to me. Also, I am learning to play the piano and banjo. I love clawhammer and your instruction, coupled with brain science, really speaks to me. Thank you for your contribution to the public's well being!

Thanks, Just finishing a 8 class banjo "101" Clawhammer course put on by the local traditional arts presenter (Calliope House). As you called it - I stink at banjo but will not give up. A group class always has to cater to the average student. They are the ones that played piano or guitar or sing. I did none of these. I am 71 and have hopes of moderate skill.I don't expect to perform or even jam with skilled players - just want to have fun. This was the 3rd beginner banjo class I gave up on. I hope to sign up on Brainjo and follow a slooow step by step path. My brother long term lent me a Vega long neck (if I die first it goes back to him). Don't worry I will concentrate on the Goodtime standard most of the time. I started reading your book and find it informative. My wife has played violin / fiddle most of her life and she passes off the the info as common knowledge. Thanks again for videos and looking forward to Brainjo.

That’s great, David. It’s not a race, and if you’re having fun, you’re doing it right! :)

This is reassuring. I don't read as much as I used to and I barely use my degree most days, but maybe all this clawhammer makes up for it a tad.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge Josh. I appreciate you sharing not just about banjo playing but why it's beneficial for our brain development and mental health.
I am 64 and began learning to play guitar at 52. Since then I have expanded from guitar to banjo and violin. In the beginning I found interest not only playing but learning how to read sheet music, basic structural theory and how to apply it to any instruments.
I do struggle with being able to remember how to play any piece of music without being focused on a tab or score no matter how many times I try to play it. It seems I have a mental blockage I can't overcome.
Do you have any recommendations to help improve this skill?
    Thanks again for your help!

thanks josh. this is great info, and i will be sending it along to my 91-year-old mother. i tell her all the time, in jest, that NOW is the time to learn the banjo. now i'm going to suggest strongly that she learn any instrument. keep up the great work (and, for the record, i am a banjo player of 40 years who has recently started working on guitar too). cheers -

I'm curious to know if there is any benefit for picking up an instrument or style you may have gotten rusty with. Does re-learning something provide any helpful stimulation to the brain.

Absolutely. Your perceived effort is likely a good gauge of the benefits - so revisiting a skill you’ve gotten rusty on is a great thing to do.

You talk about how learning multiple instruments simultaneously will actually increase your proficiency with those instruments more than just learning one; Is there a diminishing return, is it possible to learn too many instruments?
