  • People want it before they are it … more of you need to create content under the context of being an enthusiast not an expert.. so many struggle with imposter syndrome because they know they aren’t “it” I think too many are enthralled with being an Expert .. I think when you change that to enthusiast it allows you to make content and gets you on your way, your fear 😨 goes away and your creativity goes up! Have a feeling someone’s life just adjusted in a positive way ♥️💜

YES 50-year olds DO want to know how to do that!! Working on it myself with this platform while working a full-time job.
While at university, many years ago, I had an idea to travel the world and make videos about it. I studied photography and video art and even went as far as to set up a brain storm session with my friends to figure out a way to do it. Money was a huge challenge and we thought about trying to get sponsorships to help us pay for cresting the content. I lacked the confidence and courage back then to even try but damn-people are doing this now!
So after university I moved to NYC for work and it seemed more “practical” at the time-the travel vlogger dream tucked away somewhere (the name didn’t exist then lol).
Years later and I’m married with a mortgage ;) it’s not a bad life at all but my husband and I are both explorers at heart. I want to channel that energy into something better for us.
I’ve dreamed of creating this on-line business to get us out into the world more and enjoy a new chapter in our lives. We both have been working so damn hard all our lives, since a very young age-I’d like us to be able to see the world together beyond the three weeks of allocated vacation time from our jobs.
I’ve attempted a few online businesses and spent a lot of money doing so. Didn’t go anywhere and I invested 10+ years in the side hustle. I realized I wasn’t passionate about what I was doing-I was trying to escape and that wasn’t motivation enough-there are too many comforts that make it easy to settle. It wasn’t a total loss; I learned a lot about so many things (so many things to learn about the business, marketing, design, etc and it keeps building. Getting on UA-cam has been something I’ve wanted for at least a decade but I was inconsistent in my efforts. Imposter syndrome-fear of not being seen as an expert-Gary nailed it-totally kept me from giving it a real shot. Fuck that. Life is too short to hold back and I’m living that realization right now!!
This is a long comment! Bottom line I am motivated to do what I actually wanted to do finally-I think I had to try and fail so many time to wipe out those other “maybe this business will work?” until I had nothing left but my original idea!!!
So I’m creating videos, recording everything. I forgot how much I love this process! I plan to release them in October. While they may not be AMAZING to start, I am committed to making it work and to keep trying.
It feels right, coming full circle back to my original idea so long ago. My advice to anyone reading this is that it’s never too late unless you decide it is 😘

Keep going and very happy to have read this. Keep going and you shall make it happen, because you learned what works and doesn't for you + to take care of your passion and dream, since you tried the "safe" and "stable" way already. Purpose and fulfillment is around the corner!

Thank you for the encouragement to go for our dreams and for letting go of the shackles of "I need to appear like an expert".

"Fake it until you make it" is such bad advice and sadly many follow it. Iove that in your talks you bring it up, guaranteed many of your own audience still believes this. I appreciate the part where you talk about being an enthusiast is more a genuine approach which I've done the last couple years and I don't have issues with imposter syndrome.

In response to the question regarding wanting to look like a pro to others and being scared of judgement….Gary is right that it is earned……but I understand where the question is coming from. You start where you are, and be your most authentic self, and put out content that is quality content, and change how you view yourself. You are passionate, love traveling, and want to share your life with people. After some time with your travels, the things you learn, the mistakes you make, will be the content you end up coming up with that nobody else can compete with because it was your own personal experience. That is what you earn. Initially it won’t be perfect but you’ll find the ideas for optimization on your journey. You become a master after knowing yourself and how you do your own work.

Thanks Gary. I am by no means an expert in the classic car field. I know what I know but when I listen to the likes of Jason Cammisa and Matt Farah, I know I can firmly call myself simply an enthusiast. And that’s what I’ve got to make my viewers understand in order that I can bring them along on my journey. I don’t need to know the brake horsepower or braking distance of all the cars I come across, I just need to inject more of my enthusiasm for all the different cars I come across an appreciation of the experts in the field that I’m talking to. You’ve been a great source of encouragement since I found you so thank you know one day I’ll be forwarding you an email thanking you even more for your wisdom and words.

Garry, I've started following you just recently, and all that you are teaching resonates with me greatly. The stuff from this video, to be the enthusiast and not caring about the judgment of people and start creating what is boiling inside of me-that is what I did about 4 years ago and these days I am considered to be a half an expert on that field (super cool). It is still a hobby for me, but the process is wonderful. Plus, I got a lot of video creating experience so, in a week or two I am starting to document another of my passions, which is a lot bigger than the first one. It would be crazy and unreachable idea to me 5 years ago.
Although I already know the core principles you are speaking about, I haven't defined them all, and I am not fully aware of them, so it is a LOT more stronger when you bring it up and define it perfectly. I am ready to use them and deliver on those. It's like you put a stamp on my new plan and say "you got this, go ahead and crush it!".
Thank you for reading this all the way (I know you are). I appreciate you, man! God bless you and your family!

Being in the information security field I have spoken at many conferences, and many young professionals have asked me how do they become an expert in order for they can talk at a conference like me. I simply tell them they become an expert when they speak at a conference because basically you are telling your story of what you have done, and by communicating and sharing this you are an expert. The secret to speak at most smaller conferences is to submit to the call for papers/presentations. I think the term enthusiast is way better than expert and I will start using this going forward. Great stuff! Hearing him project the desire to be "the expert" the first response that kept coming up to me was why? Wonder if most people ever truly explore why they think they need to be an expert before being able to share their thoughts and experiences on a topic. It's unnecessary. What has taught me that the most is the fact that I've learned so much from children about life. People that are no where near being an expert on life generally give the biggest lessons because they're just moving in the truth of their existence with minimal social engineering.

People choose to be negative cause it’s easier to get angry and blame things or people about something. Being more on teh positive side is a choice and must be practice specially if you didn’t grow up in a very positive environment…

I have never wanted something bad that I did not trust in💯 i may have randomly wasted $ but that will never fuel a brand... I want people to genuinely trust whatever it is I'm doing

How fast I can become an expert and start making money. That cut deep. That literally sums up my growth strategy strategy. I had the mentality of I wasn’t an expert in languages, nobody will listen to me.

I think there's a faint line between negativity and honest feedback, especially from the outside looking in. When dealing with others I've come to realize that people associate things like negativity with their emotions. If what you said didn't agree with them or your advice just isn't what they wanted then they result to shaming. A lot of the time people want you to take their advice or be on their side with your feedback and if you aren't then you're negative. Which isn't true at all! I honestly believe the majority of all people want to control any or everything and if they don't get their way then it's a problem

Wow, Gary this improved my imposter syndrome being 19 hiring 2 ppl for my marketing agency one of whom has a master's degree in computer sciences just being the leader and guiding also I recently followed your strategy on linkdeln I started approaching prospective clients and told them I will be offering free services for a month to fix their broken digital branding strategy and document the whole process kind of like kitchen nightmares from Gordon Ramsay this is was yesterday I got a text back from startup owner who is building a content app targeting black creatives in us and now I am starting feeling like damn. It's moving too fast and doesn't feel real I feel kinda out of place I never expected to get so big this was my first day where I actually felt how it is to be an entrepreneur and it's very weird I like I love it don't get me wrong and I am so lucky to make it this far but sometime I feel like I am not the expert and not the epitome of a boss its weird
