Thanks so much for sharing this! Wouldn't have had a clue how to alter a jacket without it x
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
This is great, best tutorial I’ve found on shortening jacket sleeves. Very clear and thorough instructions for a proper job!
Thank you! Guess what I’m off to do now...!😀
Oh good!!
Bravo!! I've found your tutorial to be very informative, and with personally! You are definitely one of my favorites!! ❤️
Aww! Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the video and are enjoying the channel!
Great tutorial. I really like how you show the finished product. That’s what sewing is all about to me-what that garment looks like when finished.
I’m so glad you liked it!
This was a great tutorial, Whitney! You are a natural at teaching techniques and this one is certainly going to make a difference when I try thrifting for blazers! I hope you are able to manage the added Sunday tutorial episodes....I have a feeling they are going to be very successful! Again, thanks for this one!
I hope they are! I do enjoy doing them. I’m glad you’re enjoying watching them!
Thank you so much Whitney. You have given me the confidence to tackle this alteration myself next time it is needed. Great instruction, thank you.
I’m so glad!
Thank you for the tutorial. The jackets look fabulous!
It’s my pleasure!
That was a great and very useful tutorial. Thank you. Keep them coming, please.
Will do! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome tutorial! I have several blazers that need this-thank you so much for sharing your technique!
My pleasure!
Nice job! I’ve shortened sleeves on dad’s suit coat & for hubby too. Similar to this, like adjusting puzzle pieces but it makes such a difference in how the jacket looks! Thanks Whitney!
Alterations are so similar to a jigsaw puzzle!
Thank you! I think I can shorten a sleeve now! Love the Sunday tutorial, so glad you decided to try it!
I’m so glad you liked the tutorial!
Thanks Whitney! This was really helpful. I have a couple of sleeve shortening tailoring jobs coming up and you saved me a lot of thinking.
Oh good!
Very nice job. I was an alteration person for 7 1/2 years. The shortening of male and female sleeves on jackets was common practice and I altered them just like yourself. I had to reapply the buttons on the sleeves per customers requests.
Thank you for sharing your video.
My pleasure!
Thant you SO much for this! Lined jacket sleeve alterations were always a mystery to me and then last year my husband bought a charity shop tweed jacket for £5 so I could have a go at this - I found ONE tutorial on UA-cam and it was great. Yours is the same principle but a lot easier to follow and I will be using it for reference from now on. I also do away with the vents on the jackets I've altered for my husband as he's not bothered with them - luckily! 👍
Omitting the vents does make things a ton easier!
Thanks Whitney for this informational tutorial!
My pleasure!
Wow, what a difference that makes in the appearance! Thanks for a great tutorial!
Doesn’t it?!! I’m always shocked what a difference proper sleeve length can make!
Really nice tips on shortening sleevs
This was a great video and I learned from it. You explained everything in a way I can understand it. Thank you sooooo much!
That’s great! I’m so glad you enjoyed it!
This is still a good video! Just what I needed. Altering a RTW jacket. I've done it before & this is a nice/quick refresher! Simple tip of pinning the lining to the sleeve to prevent "the twist" is brilliant! Can't tell you how many times I've screwed that up. Thanks.
I'm so glad this was helpful!
So amazing what a difference proper sleeve length makes. Didn't think that would turn those blazers into something stylish. Live and learn. 😉
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great video lesson! I've done this before but long ago. I have long arms so unless I'm altering menswear I dont need.
You make it look so easy!
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Great tutorial! I need to shorten a thrifted blazer sleeves. Not looking forward doing it, but it has to be done.
😂 I get it. Alterations aren’t always the most fun.
Hi Whitney, great choice for a tutorial to show how to shorten sleeves. I am sure it will be very helpful to those who haven't tried this before. Take care and God Bless.
Thanks for watching (per usual 😉). I look forward to your comments!
@@TomKatStitchery I am so glad. I am thankful for your channel/Teaching & valuable info! (Visual learning is the best & videos allow for watching over & over). Take care.
Hi from England. Great tutorial. I look forward to them in the future.
I’m so glad!
Really nice tips on shortening sleeves
I’m glad you enjoyed this one!
Tutorial begins at 2:20. Thank you very kindly for sharing your knowledge!
My pleasure!
Thanks. Always learn something from your videos.
I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Cute jackets!!! My mom taught me to smooth/pin the layers together & sew the new seam line without seam ripping the lining and body apart. You just push the lining fullness up until it’s at a 1 to 1 ratio with the body fabric below the new seam line & trim excess after sewing new seam line.
Super fast to shorten the body hem on a lined jacket this way and I can I update 90’s length jackets with just one seam and very little effort.
Oh my goodness!! This is very interesting! Thank you for sharing this!
TomKat Stitchery it’s always been sort of a magical process to me bc once you reestablish a hem fold, the original jump pleat proportions are exactly the same. I can’t think too hard about why it works or I mess it up. Lol.
CSmith 4029 😂 I love sewing techniques that feel like magic!
Interesting please tell more. I'm a visual learner!
Excellent teaching. Thank you so much. New to ur videos. They are great. 🙏👋👋👋
I’m so glad you’re enjoying them!
Great how to video! Thanks
My pleasure!
Thanks for this tutorial. A couple of things from a very new sewer. This video was clear and easy to follow. I think if we could see your measurement for the hem it would be helpful. I think if I watch a few more time I'll get it. It was the part around the 8:30 ish to 9:00ish part of the video. The seam guage/ruler was turned toward you so we could see how you were getting the hem measurement. I wouldn't worry about the filming setup and your head being cut off because the actual work on the sleeve could be seen beautifully from your camera angle. No criticism in the above comments just some appreciation of your skills and some observations from a new sewer. I learned a lot and look forward to the next tutorial! (Sorry for the long post)
This is great! Thank you for the feedback. I love any feedback from a filming point of view because it’s where I and not nearly as confident. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks Whitney,,you made something that looked complicated easy to understand.
I’m so glad!
Learned something today and I had a book on tailoring that I used to tailor a jacket. I'll remember this if I decide to make another jacket.
Oh good!
Thank you for this tutorial. It really is easy to shorten sleeves. Do you ever use a clapper when you are steaming seams?
I do! This will didn’t really need it, but often the suiting weight wools need some convincing😉.
Really helpful Whitney. I have a RTW jacket needing 2 inch shorter sleeves (2piece sleeve).I was wondering whether to taper the seam from the elbow down to the cuff at the same time so the cuff isn’t too wide at the hem. Have you done this at the same time as re-hemming?
You could definitely do this if you’d like a slimmer sleeve. Yes, I would do this at the same time you were going to shorten!
Great Tutorial... thanks so much! Have you ever narrowed the shoulders on any of the thrifted blazers you have bought?
I have not. Narrowing the shoulder on a ready made blazer requires taking the sleeve off around the top of the sleeve and gets very involved. I have done it on a clients blazer before and I didn’t enjoy it 😂. It can be done, it’s just involved.
I've got a pinstriped jacket to shorten the sleeves of now :) Good to see someone not super tall refashioning stuff.
I’m so glad! Super tall, I DEFINITELY am not 😂.
@@TomKatStitchery Me neither :) 160 cm/(5 ft 1⁄3 ")
Great instructions. Thankyou
My pleasure!
Enjoyed this! What kind of iron do you use? Would love to see a video about equipment and tools that you use. Just started watching so maybe you have already done something like that. 💕
I do have a sewing room tour video that has links to all my equipment. My iron is a gravity fed one from Wawak.com.
It's an elaborate method but so much better than my original thought of "just cut.it off'! I would have butchered it! Thank you for this great tutorial, I've often passed by jackets at op shops because of sleeve length and I might think again next time. Is this pretty much how you'd shorten a jacket too (assuming you were happy to sacrifice pockets or were prepared to relocate a welt pocket)? Because I saw a jacket at an op shop last week that was boyfriend length but I wanted something much shorter.
Yes. This is the same idea as shortening the hem, but you are correct that you have to take into consideration the pockets when shortening it drastically!
This is so timely..my daughter picked up a thrifted wool coat and needs the sleeves shortened. Thank you!
I am not familiar with the term “bag a lining”. Is that a technique different from adding a normal lining?
It’s just a way of adding a lining where, theoretically, there is no hand sewing (or very little).
Yes! You did the shorting of the sleeve. How long did the one sleeve take? I've done many a jacket sleeve shorting and follow the steps you did. The Internet facing is a must. Do you find a need to take the sleeve width to take in at the under sleeve width for narrowing back to original width as the sleeve were made? Do I think this shorting sleeve is easy? No it is done in the exact way you showed and by no, means is this job easy!
😂 it does take a bit of time. I did not retaper the cuff as I wanted to be able to easily roll my sleeves for the “boyfriend” look, but you could definitely do that!
You did a pretty good job at showing us what u r doing, that’s what we want to see in a tutorial.
I’m so glad! I never know with these things so thank you for the feedback!
Thanks and very helpful - does it matter that the sleeve bottom will change in circumference? Do you notice the other lavada below my comment?
It’s up to you. I left mine as is so I could easily roll the sleeves, but you could definitely taper it a bit if you’d like . I did see both comments, if that’s what your asking 😉.
Thank you! Great tutorial!! :D
My pleasure!
A great illustration of shortening jacket sleeves. Now I have a question about sleeves that do have mitered and buttonhole cuffs. Should I shorten the sleeve at the shoulder since the cuffs are very intricate? I need to shorten the sleeve by an inch and a half, so I thought perhaps the best solution could be to shorten at the shoulder,. Any suggestions?
If the button holes have been cut then you need to do it at the shoulder. That is much trickier as you have to keep the same shape of the top of the sleeve. If you don’t have cut button holes then you can shorten with the miter and functioning vent, it’s just a bit more complicated than this demonstration. Angela Wolfe has a great alterations class on Bluprint if you’re interested in more!
Great tut! I like the faces you made when they were too long!! LOL!
TY! Have a great week!! :+)
😂 glad you enjoyed it!
@@TomKatStitchery :+)
Since sleeves in suits and or jackets are cone shaped the more you cut off its wider so you might have to take it in a tick?
Yes, if you're having to take the sleeve up considerably, you might want to taper it in towards the wrist.
That's fantastic, I never would've thought this is so easy. Now excuse me, I'm gonna go and thrift some jackets, no matter the sleeve lengths! One alteration I often do is narrowing my jeans at the waist, so there's no gaping at the back... I make it work but it looks horrible on the inside. Now I wonder if there's a 'professional' way to do it?
There’s a few ways to do the waist alteration, but plopping darts into the waistband was always the quick and easy way to fix that.
Thanks, I'll be doing this later in the week. Out of interest, how does a men's jacket differ?
A mans jacket has the sleeve lining sewn in at the arm hole so you can’t get inside from one sleeve to the other, you have to go into each sleeve individually.
@@TomKatStitchery thank you. That means more work for men's jacket then. I'd better make a start as soon as I get it then. 😀
Thank you, I have a question, when you take that much off the sleeve, you don’t need to taper in the cuff, or is it because they are boyfriend style blazers?
You could definitely do that, however, because I wanted the ease of rolling the sleeves for the slouchy boyfriend look, I kept them as is.
Thanks, that makes sense. I like to roll by sleeves too, one less step, I like it!
At 16:05, what are you placing on top of the sleeve before pressing?
That was just my seam gauge. I was making sure I was pressing it up evenly.
How long have you been sewing? Any tricks to add length? I have very long arms.
I have been sewing about 13 years, but I studied as an apprentice under a mentor for a few of those years. Adding length is a bit tricky. However, you can definitely just make a much smaller hem allowance. You can also add bias tape to the hem to get the most out of your fabric (this basically has you taking as little as 1/4” from the sleeve. This, of course, all depends on if the hem is cut for a miter or not. It’s definitely worth a look, though!
hello I just watched your sewing room tour video just now I see you have hard wood floors how do you keep your sewing machine electric foot pedals to stay in place so day don't slip or slide around on the hard wood floors while sewing?
They do slip around! However, I have seen quite a few people that put the gripping material that you line cabinets and shelves with both on my bottom of the pedal and the floor and that seems to work. I actually need to try that! My industrial machine has a built in pedal to the table, but I do spend quite a bit of time chasing my serger pedal around under the desk 😂.
@@TomKatStitchery ok when you get to that and figure out what works film it and share a short video so we and others can see how you solve that problem please ok ? Thank you very much and have a great day
@@TomKatStitchery I use those & they work very well
Whitney..sorry ,but I love the color of your lipstick..can you share product name and color....Also, you are such a clever person taking all of that apart...You make it look so easy...good teacher. Thank you for your time doing this for us.
I’m so glad you liked it! The lipstick is Hourglass brand in the color Warrior. I bought it at Sephora!
Fabulous thank you
My pleasure!
Do you really need the interfacing?
It really makes a crisp hem that doesn't fall in on itself.
Loved watching this tutorial wonderful I hope its the same with a mans jacket
Yep! This alteration should be the same with a man's jacket.
Thanks so much, I have some thrifted blazers that need this, now I know how!
Fantastic!
I would save my cut off pieces and use it to darn the holes.
That’s a fantastic idea!
Got to do some thrifting for a boyfriend blazer, thx
Yes! Do it for the thrill of the hunt if for nothing else 😉!
Great job and simple way to shorten jacket sleeve without that useless side button flap that has no use just make more difficult to shorten sleeve.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
If you could show how you mend the holes, that’d be awesome.
I could definitely do that. However, I just do a few whip stitches over the hole to close it. It’s not perfect, but if the thread is a good color match then it’s not too noticeable.
I have heard that it is possible to harvest thread from the cutoff bits and use that.. perfect color match, can replicate the plaid. Tk for the inspiration
That is a great Ohio State jacket! TFS
Oh no! I live in Hoosier country 😂.
oh if you have it would be nice to see it being used in a sewing video please ok? Thank you very much
I use it in my Huxley Bag Sew Along series that’s on the channel!
Line a jacket please. Ondrea
Sure!
Is she doing Morse code with her I blinks?
Sorry. I have chronic dry eye and the lights I use for filming exacerbate the issue.
@@TomKatStitchery oh gawd! you know what ?I had eyelid surgery and now I have dry eyes!??? I sometimes have to use drops
@@tanyasewbiz5734 me too! The drops do help, but mine is thyroid related so sometimes isn’t enough. Darn lights!
I forgot to mention: did I miss your daughters finished dress?
Nope! It will be on the channel on Tuesday!
4' 11" here. Need I say more? 😉😃 Thanks Whitney.
Yes! You need ALL the shortening tips!
hello very nice lady if you still have the portable home sewing machine seen behind you please kindly film how to thread and operate it please ok? Please kindly reply back ok? Thank you very much
The Janome?
@@TomKatStitchery no it's the brother sc100 it the very first sewing machine you got .
frank janvari ooh! That one is currently broken and is not usable at the moment.
yes it most be that one its right behind you in this video please ok? Thank you very much

You call this easy?
😂 once you get in there it really isn’t bad.
