Situations like this I wish STW had its own creative/sandbox mode so you could set up controlled experiments. Or maybe the devs could add brightcore/sunbeam max lvl copies of each weapon to Creative. Along with each type of husk and the different elemental variations
I've been running brightcore xenon bow since it was released. Mostly because quartz was rare back in the day in twine. But I found out really quick that brightcore was good enough. I even supercharged my brightcore xenon to 144, love it. I can save my quartz for tar pits.
My understanding was that Sunbeam and Brightcore are nearly identical but certain weapons skew much better with the higher fire rate and others with the higher damage per shot/swing. "Sunbeam everything" became a thing because on paper it's better, but we're not playing the game on paper, we're shooting husks with a certain # of HP.
I just reached Twine a couple of weeks ago. I now have 644 obsidian but only 537 shadowshard. At this rate, I'll be getting way more brightcore later than sunbeam. All my bows are going the obsidian/brightcore path, including the Xenon and Vac. I seem to draw the line at around the fire rate of 2-3. Anything faster, will get the shadowshard/sunbeam treatment. Which means my Husk Buster, Popshot, Ground Pounder are all going the shadowshard/sunbeam path. But anything slower, and that includes the Obliterator, is going obsidian/brightcore. All my melees are going obsidian/brightcore too. Speaking of bows, I find the Compression Burster, the bow that everyone shat on, to be not that bad? To me, it's on par with the Boom Bow, if not slightly better, because you can put crit rating, crit damage, fire rate, *and* reload speed on it, but you couldn't on the Boom. It has a 0.5-tile splash damage, or impact damage, similar to Boom's explosion, so it has a pretty decent AoE damage. It is no Vacuum Tube Bow let's be honest, but it's not terrible either.
@@xMistaBeastxGames Aww that's too bad. The Compression Burster also has a painfully slow draw speed, even with a fire rate perk like the other bows, not sure if it's bugged.
I looked for comparable situations in this video and have to say, that the brightcore version is, as far as I have seen, better, because, as Beast said, the brightcore version is most of the time overkilling the smaller targets anyway and, because you're shooting faster, you can do better crowd clearing with it. Also most of the mist monsters would need the same amount of hits (you can clearly see that around minute 6:40 and around minute 17:00. Beast manages then to land both of the time a headshot on blasters). The only situation, when you would want a sunbeam copy, is when you are fighting fatties, smashers or minibosses. Let me explain: Fatties are a small niche here, because if you land a headshot on an elemental fattie with a brightcore copy. They don't die, while they would have died with a sunbeam copy (I couldn't see one time in the video a fattie being one hit by the brightcore copy). I am also not sure if affliction would have finished the fatties off by landing a headshot on them with a brightcore copy. Smashers and minibosses can't be overkilled with xenonbow anyway, so it doesn't matter at all, because the xenonbow wouldn't be your first pick for killing smashers and minibosses. Please correct me if I got anything wrong. This is just what I noticed in the video.
I´ll share a little story abouy my nocturno. Its been years since I upgraded it to brightcore, and back in the day i didnt know the difference. So, as you can imagine, i was pretty sad when the "brightcore vs sunbeam" reached its peak. I even considered not using the weapon again since i already had a scourge, but after some time, and after trying the 3 crit build, the reload build, and a couple more, i noticed something... Im dealing less dmg per shot, yes, but in exchange im shooting faster, have more bombs which is the whole point, a more durable weapon and overall, the EXACT same result that i had with a sunbeam nocturno (My friend has the exact same build but with sunbeam) I was impressed nonetheless, and decided to do the exact same thing whit a couple of weapons, and i gotta say, they work just fine. Afliction makes up for the lack of dmg when they end up with a pixel of health. ¿What im trying to say with this? Its NOT neccesary to upgrade everything to sunbeam. Brightcore will perfectly do the job and will also help you with the resources management (If you are not an endgame player, sunbeam can fly faster than you might like), so dont be afraid to do it. And if you can afford 2 copies, go ahead. Your inventory will thank you PD: This analisis DOESNT apply to melee weapons. Those should be sunbeam 99% of the time
I made both copys with obliterater. One is decked out in crit the other is set up for speed and mag. And for the sake of using my mats evenly, going with speed on defenders is fun. Even the defenders are perked in speed and mag. Constant fire power! I did the same for my shotguns. But perked them the same with reload speed so it feels like continuous fire. (The shotgun you hate lol)
I've always told people that they should have at least a brightcore copy of weapons they like. Even if they don't like them they can still give them to defenders.
I myself have breakcore obliterators for my defenders cuz they go through them like tissues. It also helps you save resources if you just got to twine and are low on resources
hello! i’ve been thinking about this and i can’t afford to test it myself: i feel that the shield perk on the plasmatic discharger would pair well with extraterrestrial rio, seeing as the truckloads of damage would probably give you alot of shield, keeping rio’s perk active
Do you have to wait for a certain time of the year to unlock the plasmatic discharger? I completely missed earning It around X-mas time, and the few that I got from some random dude are all gone and it's sooo hard to get past Twine Peaks storm bases.
I personally changed my xenon to brightcore after it occured to me that I tend to fire twice against most things anyway, more durability= less farming to make weapons (and it feels better with the fire rate)
I would say it depends on the team that which one is better, like if you have good teamates both sunbeam and bright core 1shot small and fatties, but in something like frostnight, you need those 20% damage, sinse 500power husks need 20% more damage
I really appreciate your scientific approach to these claims. Even though it's just a video game, your default response is to analyze the questions logically and put them to the test. It's a sign of a sophisticated mind to call one's own views into question.

I have my sunbeam set to crit damage, crit rating, fire rate, reload, afflcition and damage to affliction. Since brightcore has more firerate does that mean I could perhaps replace fire rate with either damage or another crit damage when I make a brightcore one? Or is it more fun to enjoy the more fire rate. How did you guys set the perks on a brightcore copy?
I will always use sunbeam, but I may want to level up a brightcore copy to use different resources for easier missions where the extra damage isn't needed
Change the perks to CR, Reload, FR, CD. Cause it triggers on reload and empty mag the thing blasts out so much ammo and reloads in what would be the same time for the sun one to just empty a mag. Essentially turning it into a monsoon with the explosions.
From what I'm aware of Disposable weapons such as RPG's and Grenade Launchers it's better to run Brightcore as those weapons in particular Eat through Durability at an alarming pace. As for Automatics it depends on the Automatic frankly.I always run three Of my favorite weapons and at least one of the three is Brightcore. It's just more cost effective, and there are moments when your in a pinch and those sunbeam weapons break then your fluffed with no hope as your out of sunbeam to craft them then what? You have Brightcore. So in this situation it's better to have at least One Brightcore weapon to fall back on. From what I can tell Automatic Weapons being Brightcore is both good and bad GOOD if the weapon has high base Crit Chance or High Fire Rate, Bad If it doesn't why you ask? Simple it's making up the difference over time Yes it is not burst damage but when your shooting so fast everything dies faster what the heck does it even matter? Your working with Instant Burst dmg to Over Time damage it depends on the weapon's functionality in the end.
Would it be worth sacrificing the FR on brightcore since it fires quicker by default over sunbeam and add damage perk to make up for the 20% less damage? On a vac bow I removed reload on a brightcore and put damage, the DPS was alot higher than my charged sunbeam copy. It was nice but love your original perk settings so changed it back. Love the videos, always great info as usual
