    Really enjoyed the footage of putting out the spreader pole and other "mundane" sail changes but very interesting for a non sailor like me. I am amazed how far you two have come, from mudding the water in rougher conditions, to just a spicy sail. Good to see your confidence in the boat and yourselves. Tailwinds...

      It’s crazy to think we only left the U.K a year ago, we’ve definitely learned a lot since we left 😅 I think we can almost call ourselves sailors now…

    You two are seriously becoming legends !! Good on you. I have to admit in the early days I wasn't too sure about you two on the open ocean but you sure have proven yourself to be worthy blue water sailors.

    Hi Becca and Zack. Oldschool advice on lighting. What I do is connecting pieces of chain to the stays long enough to reach the water at all times. Especially the forestay as, I was told, it is prone to lighting seeking this thing first to find "ground".

      If there is electical continuity from the top of the mast to the water, electrically speaking the top of the mast 'appears' to be below sea aurface. Therefore less likely to be struck by lightening. Most masts of boats are struck when on land.

    Another awesome video! I couldn't help but notice, however, that the way you finish your knots on the cleats could use some tweaking. As you finish the knot, I saw that you go in a straight line instead of making a parallel loop. This could result in the knot locking itself when under a lot of stress. When you make the last loop the other way around, you'll see the line running parallel, which will never get too tight and ensures that you will always be able to untie it with ease.
    Just a little tip from the Netherlands. Once again, I love the footage and envy the both of you!

    Bonaire is one of my favorite places to visit. In addition to its scuba and snorkeling, I feel the Cadushy Distillery is worth a visit. Becca might consider taking a guided horseback ride through the mangroves, and Zack might want to dive the Hilma Hooker (a wreck at a depth of about 30 meters). Back in the day the most requested items to bring back from my trips where the "Eat, Sleep, Dive, Buddy Dive" shirts, and either Captain Don’s Whisky or Orange of Orange Liqueur. (The Orange of Orange Liqueur is a particularly good way to celebrate any special occasion.) Depending on one's sense of humor, the "I penetrated the hooker" merchandise can be found as well. Enjoy the island!

    The finest sailing video ever.
    I follow a number of SV vids, they seem to have become overwhelmed with advertising of late, I do understand how this happens, it does not make for good viewing, although I still subscribe, as they are good people and at times respond to my comments.
    It is so great that fellow country folk can make good and thrive at sea.

    I heard you mention about not wanting to exceed the hull speed....
    I brought my first yacht 2 years ago (complete novice) and made 7.5 knots on a 6 knot hull when i sailed her 30nm home. Asked the harbour master if that was good or not and he explained the ratings is what speed the hull can take an impact without splitting.
    He said let her eat, im assuming he ment go as fast as your comfortable lol
    Do check my information please but i believe if your in open water with no chace of hitting anything you can get what like like speed wise.
    Fair weather and happy voyaging 🙏

    When sailing with motor off, can you engage reverse on the gearbox to stop the driveshaft whirring noise? People with feathering props grab reverse which makes the blades feather, but i figure it should stop the prop spinning regardless?

    • @mareepretorius
      @mareepretorius Рік тому

      Yes I wanted to comment on that but then saw your comment. Its not only an irritating noise but letting it spin puts lots of unnecessary wear on the transmission. I had a folding prop and even that needed to be in reverse to make it fold and stop spinning. The small increase in sailing speed due to reduced drag is not worth the increased wear

    I would think a microwave might be a good electronic storage spot. They're built to keep electricity in so they're probably pretty good at keeping it out as well.

    a Farad cage protects against electrostatics by approximately 220 dB, but lightning is an electromagnetic pulse that is poorly shielded, for example, a 5-layer shield of copper-permal steel hardens by only 42 dB, if your plate is magnetized, it doubles the electromagnetic pulse by approximately 38 dB. Lightning is dangerous because it leads at every meter wire of approximately 1 kV voltage, approximately 10 M of wire of 10 kV voltage, if the device has weak protection on the side of the wire, then it fails, for example, antenna, charger, etc. In terms of power supply, devices are protected by approximately 600 volts, electric motors by 1.5 kV, and so on...

  • @kengerace

    Hey Guys. Not heard of a lightening strike having an EMP like effect but maybe it does. Get a faraday bag. They are rated for nuclear blasts. You could have your gear at the ready in the cockpit but protected. I’d suggest get your amateur radio license and an HF radio. Your VHF marine radio is line of sight and might get as far a 50 miles, not the hand held. That might get you 5-10. HF you can talk to the world off a just a bit if wire as your antenna. You can do voice, data (email and other modes) slow scan tv and get satellite images and weather info. Also on the 20m band on freq 14.300 is the Maritime Mobile Services Network on air from Noon-22:00 ET daily. The love to talk to anyone but especially vessels even if you’re just checking in to say good morning. Have fun, good luck, I have been enjoying your videos.

    In all my years of sailing and living aboard I've only seen three boats that were hit by lightning. It fried all their electricals. Lightning is unpredictable. I don't l know of any sure fire way to prevent a lightning strike. The Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico are plagued by lightning storms, especially in the summer months. Haul down the sails and crank the motor. Luckily they don't last that long...generally. Good Luck....

    An idea for lightning protection.. it’s bit of an investment. An EMP shield. Can range between $500-$1500 USD (maybe cheaper if you shop around, but a quick google search for cost gave me that range). Hope that’s at least somewhat helpful. Happy sailing :)

    I would imagine in an emergency like abandoning ship after a lightning strike, you might not have time to get the electronics out of the oven.
    Why don't you convert a bag into a Faraday cage. You just need to have a container of all metal. Tin foil should work OK.
    The concept of a Faraday cage is a bit difficult to explain, you have to think of electrical fields like the lines on a map that show height except an electrical field is not a line it's a surface. If the metal container conducts electricity then it is a constant value all around the edge of the Faraday cage and so the electrical charge can't move perpendicular to the constant field surfaces. It's been 27 years since I studied this stuff.
    Just line a bag with metal tin foil and don't walk into a shop with the bag, because that's how shop lifters get past security systems, so you might get arrested if someone thinks you are a shop lifter.

    When I had my boat back in the late 70s, lightning (sorry, not lightening. It's the journalist in me...) was always a bit of an obsession with me. I had basically no electronics on board, but lightning striking your mast can theoretically blow your hull apart or at least leave you with a big hole where you really don't want it! I read up on it, of course, and one thing widely recommended in those days was to trail a chain in the water. Which I did religiously whenever lightning was about. I was never hit and cannot vouch for the actual value of that chain hanging off the mast and overboard into the water. Strangely enough, I once saw a guy in Arizona doing the same thing, though, but with a car! Dragging a chain hanging off the back of his pick-up truck, or "ute" as we call them in Australia. You have to wonder how that would have looked in heavy traffic on an American freeway...

    Of course, rubber insulation inside a true Faraday cage (which an oven in all fairness is unlikely to be) offers no additional protection against charge - but it might stop your stuff slipping about in unsettled conditions. 😊 On the other hand given an oven is indeed an imperfect Faraday cage, it probably does help. Interesting experiment to try - put your mobile in the oven close the door and try to all it. Chances are, it will ring.

    Thanks for another lovely video! Always nice to follow your journey! Well done for evading the lightning and the pirates! Just remember not to turn the oven on :-)! The main thing I think is to make sure there's a route for the lightning to get to ground easily - some boats have this buit in with a grounding plate for the mast the traditional alternaitve was to wrap some chain around the mast and throw the other end in the water. If the current from the lightning needs to find its own way out then it's likely to jump across things and blow holes in the boat etc (if you want to hear an account of being struck by lightning have a look at Sailing into Freedom) In terms of stopping lightning striking I'm not sure there's much you can do - there are some hairy things you can put on the mast which try to equalise the static with the air around the mast but I'm not sure whether it works or not. £800 seems pretty excessive!

    As for a faraday cage, you can easily turn any storage are into one with aluminum foil. If you have metallic tape it will make things better, just don’t bring a power cable from outside in. Where the foil edges meet, fold over a couple times and tape flat.

    I've learnt a lot about lightning from the podcast "On the Wind Sailing" who did an interview with Jeff Thayer who designed lightning defense systems for NASA. It's podcast #290 from 28 apr 2020. He says that the oven is not enough. The oven door is a rather big hole in the Faraday cage and separate from the oven body because of the rubber sealing. He suggests to wrap mobile devices into a couple of layers of aluminium foil. I think closing the Faraday cage by putting some layers of aluminium foil between oven door and body should also do the trick. Hope this helps. And btw I love your honest videos :)

      Also, when you're in a situation where you might need the engine soon, start it and leave it on idle. If you get struck by lightning and all electrics are fryed, there is no way to turn on the engine. But if it's already running it continues to do so without electrics ;)

    Can hear the whining of your gearbox. Please when you are not using your motor when sailing put it in reverse. This will lock the propeller shaft so it does not spin. When it is spinning it is wearing your stern tube, wearing your prop shaft, wear out your gearbox and create more drag than a locked shaft. The reduced wear of all these parts will save you a fortune in maintenance expenses. But best of all the silence of a locked shaft will make you more relaxed and able to sleep better.

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  Рік тому +1

      Our gearbox is hydraulic so putting it in reverse doesn’t stop it. Also the manual recommends for us to leave it free spinning so that’s what we do. However, we are fitting a folding prop soon to prevent wear

      It’s a shame about how much it now costs cruisers to go there, for us it would have been over $500 for a few weeks just for visas. We absolutely loved Bonaire!

      Hey Monique, thanks for subscribing. It’s not your fault, no need to say sorry. It’s just a shame, it looks like it would have been a beautiful place to cruise. Hopefully one day we will get the chance to come back! Thank you ☺️

    They say no mater what systems or preparations the effect of lightning strike is unpredictable. I was hit once, was on boat I did not have much hooked up , but took out battery charger, fridge, and removed mast head VHF antenna with out a trace. No delay between lightning and thunder just Blam.

    Interesting video, nice little voyage, enjoyed it. I take issue with calling ‘Watches’ ‘shifts’ , calling them Watches reminds people what they are actually doing!. Mind you, re lightning I did nearly all of my long distance sailing before all of the Gismo’s you were putting in the Oven were invented! 😅

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  Рік тому

      Sometimes we call them watches, I guess it depends how enjoyable the nights have been for us. On slightly more challenging nights I think they get called shifts....

    Would it be possible to rig your boom preventer from the end of the boom forard through the 'eye' in the appropriate bow cleat and back to the cockpit winch so that it would be easier to adjust? (mitherings of an armchair sailor!)

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  Рік тому

      The cleat is a bit far forwards for that to work properly. However, we will be improving this system before next season with some frictionless rings 😁

    For us, we were taught to wrap your anchor chain around the base of your mast and put it into the water. Having said that we have been hit twice now and initially most things worked fine, but over the next 6 months they all broke, so the second time we got everything checked and the insurance replaced it all.

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  Рік тому

      That sounds like it should work, I'll have a look into it! But yeah it is probably worth it to just replace everything as you wouldn't want stuff playing up off shore....

    For what it's worth I was taught when there's lighting about rap section of anchor chain around the mast and feed it through to the sea, insulating the chain against any metal bits on route to the sea. In the event of a lighting strike, the power is earthed to the sea. You may like to google that idea and see what the response is
