Ha! I remember standing in Joe Louis Arena on a hot July night in 1981--I was exhausted, everybody around me was exhausted, the band was exhausted, and Bruce just kept laughing and playing and playing. And I thought, Damn! I wish I wasn't born so late and missed the Born to Run and Darkness shows. And I was born in 1962.
Oh boy...I was there. NO ONE put on a show like that. Electric. He played for forever, say good night, then come back out, turn up the lights and play covers for another hour. Unbelievable.
If someone ever asks about the "Born to Run" album, just show them this video and say, " 'She's the One" is probably considered to be only the 4th or 5th best song." Then walk away and let them think about that for a little while.
that is very well said...but in my opinion, She's the One may only be the 4th or 5th best song on the studio album, but live?? well that's a different story, probably the best on the record when played live.
I'm with you on that, I think that Hammersmith version is fantastic because it is so raw, it's the genesis of what that song eventually became in live performances. Hammersmith gives me goosebumps because you just know that Bruce went over to England with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove given the fact that some people were labeling him as a hyped up star. I think it's safe to say that concert put that notion to rest.
+Bman Here's one to also consider. You could very reasonably argue that "Born to Run" is the greatest song ever written. However, it could also be argued (somewhat reasonably) that it's the third or fourth best song on the album.
+Bob Gwartney +spacepyjamas + Anthony Salvati +steve J All great points. @spacepyjamas & Anthony Salvati: She's the One is incredible live and yes the Hammersmith version is out of this world. Love the harmonica intro. And how he comes back to it right near the very end. @Steve J: That's the great thing about the Born to Run album, Thunder Road, Born to Run, and Jungleland, for example, are all great and all for different reasons. @Bob Gwartney: Love Backstreets, as a kid I didn't think much of it when I first got the album. Then I went to my first show (of any performer) and it was the first song Bruce played that night. Needless to say I grew up that night and realized what a stupid kid I had been.
I never knew just how great Bruce Springsteen was - I had heard but never seen him play live. I grew up in San Francisco during the sixties and saw a lot of great music. Then one night in the seventies I went to a concert at Winterland - blew my socks off. Really incredible.
OMG! Ive been a Springsteen fan forever and the first time I saw them was this tour. THAT'S the tour where Bruce & the Band laid waste to the world. They had hype so freaking much and man, Oh man, did they blow expectations out of the water. It was glorious to behold. GLORIOUS. Never saw these before either - can you just imagine how great these videos would have been at the time? The was no footage of these guys -just No Nukes I believe and that was a year later.
We saw Bruce so many times in Largo. Always got in trouble for coming home so late. My mom never believed us when we said he just wouldn't stop playing. Just saw him in Raleigh…still the best show around.
It just gives me shivers at the end to see them going to the mikes to wrap up the song with their gutteral shouts and yells and heys. Some of the most passionate and energetic concerts, much like when I saw them in 1980 and 1981. Wow!
I swear if I was on a baseball team Eagles baseball team batting a thousand listening to you all night!!🙂🧛♀️❤💃👍✌👋 PS you absolutely melt me like a ice cream on a hot sunny day.
for mr. mike schafer of mason michigan......r.i.p my good friend......this man gave me recordings long before youtube....bootleg springsteen from this very tour and show....priceless to me in many ways over the years.....i miss ur insight and conversations......still think u were wrong about U2.....but we will discuss that next time my friend
sounds like a rerun for me...saw the tunnel of love tour in Pittsburg...first w/end WITHOUT toot..but with great herb...dont remember a whole lot...They tell me it was great
I was at Northwestern for his '78 tour, at McGall hall. I ended up bringing my little sis. Couldn't talk any friends into going. Needless to say, they're still in psychotherapy 2x a week on account of not going!!! Also saw him in '80 at the Uptown theatre in Chicago. If those two concerts were the only ones I could see in my lifetime, I'd be MORE than content
August 9, 1978, the Cleveland Agora coffeebreak concert. The greatest band ever assembled at its absolute zenith played the best 20 minutes of rock music ever recorded--Springsteen's She's The One medley. Mighty Max was a fuckin locomotive and The Boss totally relentless. The crazy part was that only about 1,500 people were actually there. Cleveland might not have been Bruce's city of origin, but ignited by Kid Leo and fueled by WMMS, it served as his launching pad into the midwest and then the left coast.
i was at landover in 90 or 91, tunnel of love tour, did way too much toot and have been kicking my own ass ever since..a bruce shows all the buzz ya need
George, I was lucky enough to be there this night in Landover, my first E Street Band show. You're right, the "Darkness" tour was the best. They melted the stage every night.
@@jamespanagoulias7306 I was there. Both shows at the Capital Center were amazing. But in my opinion, having seen him over 100 times, other great periods were early '74 and early '75. The '74 band had Davey Sancious and Boom Carter and was a LOT funkier and lively. The early '75 band was more polished and had the violin of Suki Lahav integrated into a powerfully romantic presence. But we all like different things.
@ the 10:58 mark as he closed the 4 count I could see her... naked with the light of a thousand angels flowing behind her.. and apparently @ the 11:35- mark Clarence had the same damn vision!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW this shreds my soul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
At 7:45 into the video Bruce does his best Rudolph Valentino eyebrow move ( ! ! ). Remember, he was only 28 then, and sometimes he'd even lock up female acquantinces in the broom closet backstage to make sure they'd still be there when he finished his set. Youthful insecurity can help delve up great lyrics, but its not so great for interpersonal relationships. I prefer the 58+ who could do both.
this when he was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw him everywhere on the east coast! Once Born to Run hit,,we lost him!! But he's still the Boss!!!!!!!!!!!! He never forgot where he came from!!!!!!!!!
@@AudreyLayneAudlayne714 I agree with you completely. Those of us who were fortunate enough to see him before Born to Run had a vision of heaven. There really are no words.
omg omg you are so silly . . . he's a frigging rock star with millions and he used to be married to a super model. Any "anger" he still holds on to is faux outrage yo . . . moral outrage about what is "right" is not part of his world
Born to run is basic fundamentals musically speaking. Stuff you learn in 10th grade band, chromatic scales etc. you want to tell me Bruce is one of the most charismatic stage performers of all time, I won't argue, but musically speaking he's mediocre (at best)
Bruce in 1978 can’t be beat by anyone ever, that’s just facts
I agree , l have the bootleg: live in winterland":Still none went close to that live performance!
Sometimes I'm so sorry that I was born only in 1993... this is simply amazing!

I used to think that about the 60's music. I was born in '73.
I'm older than dirt.
I was born in 1967 and couldn't see this. Wish I did.
Some dirt don't die...
My favorite Bruce song. And Clarence blowing that sax like nobody else could. The best!

I understand. I was and am a fanatic Deadhead. But also fortunate enough to have seen Springsteen in 1973 and onward.
I had a copy of that show you went to. It was a Bootleg Record, that I had a Truck Driver friend find for me. He Loved his Cummings. RIP Matthew.
These pre 1985 concerts were his best.

Keep it angry Bruce!
Obvious that Buddy Holly was present.
