Sentimental items ie where to draw the line between sentimental & preserving family history so to speak (I struggle bc I lost both my parents in my early 20s, I've lost all my grandparents already, and husband lost his dad when he was 16 and only has one living grandparent)
Minimalism vs frugality.. wanting to declutter things not often used or extras but know will have to spend the money again at some point down the road etc or bulk buying but not much storage.. handmedowns.. things like that..
      Specific cleaning products & routines
Umm idk but I know you'll have great ideas

I found your channel last week & it has changed my life. when I was newly married & pregnant with my first, I got lost in the world of youtube mommy vloggers- the ones with mcmansions who decorate every inch of their 4000 sq ft homes for each holiday. because of them, I legitimately believed my baby wouldn't have a good life unless we had ALL the toys & home decor & a Pinterest worthy playroom.
after moving into a 3800 sq ft home and having my second baby in February, I have felt the weight of all our useless purchases sitting heavily on me & stealing my time from my children. since finding you, i've spent everyday decluttering, and it's honestly saving me from what was I think was postpartum depression. I feel like I can breathe again! thank you Madisun, you are an actual angel! I can't wait for the podcast!

I am really enjoying your videos. When my children were born back in 1993-1997 I found simple living. At the age of 34, in 2004 I started facilitating Voluntary Simplicity courses at libraries, churches, volunteer centers & yoga studios. I am so glad that I raised my children this way. They are now grown and have a pretty realistic grasp on what it means to live simply. I’m 52 now and still live this way, it’s allowed me so much freedom in my life.
It is always a joy to find other like-minded people. It can feel so counterculture to live this way. We are so fortunate to have the Internet to be able to connect with others when society as a whole doesn’t seem to be living simply.

I can relate so much to feeling discontent with where we live and if only we could live somewhere else… life would be that much better. It’s a struggle that I have to continuously give to the Lord and remember that he has our family exactly where he wants us for this time, and for us not to waste it, but to be rooted and present where we are. I appreciate your honesty!

@@HerCupOfSIMPLE Oh wow. Thanks for sharing. Contentment is hard for humans in general. Add in the culture and all the things that we are told we need for happiness, and it can seem like an impossible feat. I've found in my life that if I die to what I think I must have for happiness, contentment follows and sometimes what I want actually happens. I think the Lord just wants to know if we are able to rest in Him and trust that He has the absolute best in mind for us.

I’m in my 60s and have always been a minimalist. I definitely get anxious with clutter and don’t like dusting. Fortunately my husband was also on board. However, I’m warning those of you with young kids the clutter comes when your kids become teenagers and get their first job and money to spend on stuff… maybe it’s a rebound effect.

Since I have slowed down I can feel my anxiety and stress melting away. I am more patient and calm. I finally have time to get down on the floor and play with my baby or 3 year old. Before they would ask me all day to play and I kept saying later but then bed time would come. I felt like a defeated parent. I love my kids and the whole reason I started homeschooling my 5 and 8 year olds and being a stay at home mom was so we could have more time as a family. I lost my mom at 21 and i remember her working 2 jobs and going to school, I would give anything to go back and just enjoy the moments we did have together. Time is precious ✨️

I moved several times in 2 years and a friend told me "No matter where you go... there YOU are." Now I have lived happily in one place many years on two acres with a well and a small house. I keep planting pine trees and it feels like i live in a forest but I'm on the edge of town.

  • @kaylarowe911
    @kaylarowe911 2 роки тому +5

toootally understand the desire to move all the time, that’s definitely something I’m always working through. we live in a suburban town but I’m always dreaming of the future living somewhere more “unique” or “interesting.” 😅 I’ve found each time I move though that every town is just another place with people, buildings, houses, restaurants, etc., and soon it becomes familiar and you desire somewhere new. for me I think it’s that “newness” feeling I want to last. our environment can totally influence our behavior and mood but the lasting change comes from within for sure. still working on this! just nice to hear someone else acknowledge!!

Just pulled my kids out of public school and one of the things that I worry about the most is how they will survive and thrive with the rest of the world when they become old enough to branch out on their own. So for example - if one of my kids wants to go college but the college they want to go to expects them to know algebra because public high schools require students to take algebra... but I homeschool and I didn't teach them algebra... that will be a big struggle for them, right? And then I would feel like it's my fault that I didn't prepare them. How do you reconcile yourself with those kinds of thoughts? Do you address them? Do you change your routines to try to fix that situation, or do you just go on faith that it will all work out in the end? I don't know what to think or do but I'm really curious how ither homeschooling parents address these kinds of issues.

    • @garlicgalore
      @garlicgalore Рік тому

@@Nicole-vh8xf two of our unschooled daughters went to college graduating suma cum laude and now have jobs that are flexible and interesting. Our third daughter simply segued into being a librarian at our local library- also flexible and interesting! We found that homeschooling grew People who really know that their life is Theirs. It's something you take ahold of and live, that you can make choices for yourself about where you want to be and what you want to do, how you want to contribute, and who you want to build family with. They know that the timetables for being a "success" and the judgements of what it means to thrive are just human made ideas and differ all across the globe.
We found that the expectation of where students are academically when they enter college is pretty basic at most colleges. The freshman year is often a catch-up year for many, so courses will be available for whatever is needed. The best part was that our college-daughters weren't burned out on formal education, it was all interesting and new, and they had enthusiasm to learn in that setting. They weren't jaded and the profs loved helping them because their interest was genuine.
Also, people can attend college at any time, and if they need algebra they can learn algebra at any time. Sometimes the motivation for learning a thing isn't present until there is a goal that requires it. Humans are learners, makers, and doers - it's in our DNA and it's the very reason we sometimes have trouble sleeping (lol) because we ruminate, think, figure, trouble-shoot life! That inbred skill is available when it hasn't been squelched by poor educational settings.
One thing, though - your children will probably go in their own direction at their own pace, which is beautiful, but will also possibly make You uncomfortable because you and I have the indoctrination of our society imbedded in our psychys! And even if we are brave outside-the-box types, we are nothing compared to these people we raised who got to actually Live being really outside the box! Our daughters attended college all on their own, paying their way with grants and loans and scholarships, at the ages of 21&19, and one went for 5 years instead of pushing for 4 because pushing made the experience really awful.
It will all work out fine, but not as some accidental occurrence. It will work out because you'll be doing things all along the way together, introducing them to real life. There is so much time when you homeschool to be actual participants in the real society around you... visiting and volunteering at the library, going to museums, waterfalls, events, delivering meals to seniors, playing in a bell choir, cleaning trash at the park, going to city council meetings..so many things people do in the real world!
Best of all, homeschoolers get to spend huge amounts of time on their own, too - daydreaming, building stuff, cooking, baking, sewing, fishing, coloring, drawing, getting enough sleep, reading algebra (!) Whatever interests them! One of our daughters studied herbalism around age 13, another had a pet-sitting business at age 14 (she works at a vets and a private kennel now - after studying Japanese and living there for a year in college) There is time to learn about themselves, what they like, who they are, and where they want to go. So it does all work out because you and your children are engaged in real life, real living.
Keep getting connected to homeschoolers and borrow the confidence until one day you are sharing your own confidence with the next homeschoolers coming along!💖

We lived in Hawaii for 12 years. I was single and engaged when I moved there. We had our two kids there and left when they were 6 and 9. I am 50 now, so I know I’m of a different generation. But, I noticed that most military families were extremely unsettled or even miserable the first year they were there, but by the time their rotation came up at 2.5 to 3 years, they were so sad to leave. The hardest part for me was being so far from family while raising my kids. Now, my husband and daughter really want to move back, and I think I would love it. Just the cost to live there is crazy. My dream is to by an RV and travel for a year, but I find myself wanting to escape my current life and start fresh. I could be content if I knew I was never going to leave here (Wisconsin), but my husband is tired of the winters, so I never feel settled. I did homeschool for 15 years and would not trade that for anything. Loved the hundreds of hours of reading to them! Now, to deciliter 30 years of stuff, lol.

I definitely feel like it's so easy to compare ourselves and want what might look and sound better. It's a lot harder to be content with what we have or where we live. Last March I was constantly looking at Zillow to see what houses were around because I really wanted to be in a more rural area with a bigger yard for my kids to be able to run around in as they grew up. One day as I was looking at houses I felt convicted to stop looking at what i felt would be "better" and look at all the positives of where I was and actually enjoy being in a more urban neighborhood. We were within walking distance to a library, a park, and a coffee shop. I had a little raised garden that my daughter loved helping me with. I am so thankful I stopped looking at what I felt was better because I was able to actually enjoy what would turn out to be the last year I would live there. At the end of September we found out we would be moving to a new state by December for my husband's job. Now we live in a more rural area and have our bigger yard but there's other challenges. Our library in our new location is closed from weather damage for the foreseeable future and now we live 45 minutes from the closest Amazon return location. 🤦‍♀️ No matter where you live there's going to be things you love and don't like, but it's up to you to decide which you want to focus on. I would rather enjoy where God has me because you don't know when that might change. ❤

I get the whole never feeling right where you live. I moved away from my home state when I was 11 only to spend the next 13 years dreaming of how perfect my life would be when I moved back. We'll, we've lived here for 4 years now and I haven't been happy. It's such a strange thing. But I'm excited for the next move and it gives me a feeling of hope and what will be best for our daughter and us as a family. LOVE your channel!

As a fellow millennial I felt totally heard by the moving thing. We moved from Colorado which I loved so so much, back to my hometown and I can never come up with a good reason why other then it’s expensive to live out there and my family is here. I hope I can look with as much grace as you, to find the purpose. My heart misses the mountains and my friends. I keep telling myself I can go visit someday.

You are so right. I’ve recently decluttered my entire house. Especially so products I use like shampoo and cleaning products. Have gone organic for it all. I gave all my stockpile of other stuff to the local food bank. I had a chat with friends and family and just explained that I’ve gone organic to help my daughter’s skin and health. Have stopped using candles etc. people have been so kind and have asked what would be nice for Christmas. We’re getting organic bath bombs and lovely body oils etc. Everyone’s been so kind. I’ve also explained that we are very blessed and don’t want for anything really. ❤

You are not alone. I have always loved the outdoors and my alone time. When I was young I always felt like a outsider even when I was part of "it"? I more than ever have had a strong desire to travel and rv or buy land just to be open. Not limited in my thinking. I am recently saved and I believe that drives me even more to want to live a more peaceful life. To trust in him for my needs and wants. Also this year I will be homeschooling our four children. I am very grateful to have found your channel.

    Hi Maddie,
I love all your videos!! You always inspire me to remove all the clutter, both physical, mental, and on my phone to focus on what really matters. This is not only opening up space to be more present with my daughters, but is also removing distractions that are keeping me from doing what God is calling me to do, and spending time in His Presence. I also love your parenting style, respecting your children and just following their interests instead of always doing more. ❤️

I'm not sure how I stumbled across your channel, a few of your videos popped up on my feed. Which I have been watching enough to be a new subscriber 💕. Your personality, tone of voice is very relaxing. I have been on a serious declutter journey for 2 months. Decluttering in a way that I'm listing everything on Poshmark which I'm enjoying this as passive income. I admittedly was a shopaholic but as I get older 'less is definitely more'. My parents live with me and my mom is definitely a pack rat, I'm secretly getting rid of old books, clothes etc. 😅 it's so freeing and I feel lighter day by day. So thank you for all the content you're putting out.

I hope you don't mind me commenting on each area...if I annoy you, just let me know. haha.
    1. I love gardening. I had one for a few years at my parents' house when I asked for a small plot of their huge backyard. However, when COVID hit, we hadn't been there for eight months and they took the whole thing down and I worked so hard on building it when I did. I hope next year I can rebuild it again (can't this year since I am 5 months pregnant right now. We rent a two family house apt. and our landlord has a garden here but won't let us have one too (and the yard is really tiny so I understand). He does let us have a compost bin in the back yard though.
    2. Love how you had to learn how to fill the void you had with the right things such as with God. Beautiful. I totally have been there and felt similar. Jesus having pretty much nothing and no place to rest his head truly was part of the inspiration for me.
    3. I love how you suggested to the person to set aside a timer to declutter a little per day. My mom often complains she has no time to declutter (she's retired), so I literally went with her to her bathroom, went through the area under her sink, decluttered and asked what she needed most, used, or maybe didn't need at all. It took us 5-8 minutes. I said, "That's all it takes. A few minutes a day." She is a bit of a hoarder and cluttered person, but was so grateful to me.
    4. You are so right. . .people who get to know you will know what your kids want or not. My parents/in-laws/siblings were upset for a couple years with gifting issues, but now they say, "Do you need clothes? Do you want money?" to my kids. . or something like that.
I've been making my own cleaning supplies for over a decade and usually vinegar and water with essential oils and baking soda are all I use. Saved me so much money.
    5. I homeschooled for a long long time until financial issues hit us after COVID lockdown and I got a job a year and a half ago (that I am leaving soon). My oldest was entering high school at that time which we always talked about possibly homeschooling until then. I totally used so much variety in homeschooling, was in 3 co-ops, and made up my own curriculum for certain subjects. I can't wait to homeschool again in a few years. Love seeing what new resources are like.
    6. Move where your family feels is best together. :) Which state are you in now?
    7. We are all early birds here too. Love that you take walks and allow independent play and outdoor play. I did that for a long time and now my kids seem glued to the computer like my husband has always been (though my younger son is very productive and does graphic design constantly), so it is a hard thing to learn to balance because I am an outdoors person. We find ways to do it though.
    8. I love how you said there is a saver and a spender. I am the saver and my husband is the spender. It is nice that you went to counseling together to work things out.
I was a minimalist for several years alone. . maybe 6 or 7 years before my husband got on board. That's a huge story in itself. It wasn't easy.
Do you still have your podcast?
    I am sorry I wrote a book here. . . .

I struggle still with comparing and figuring out what things to take to be my vision of good life from all your good talks and advice and definitely know my life has been better with yall in it. Im coming off my medications and doing more therapy to heal deeper so i can learn to be happy and stop surviving. Do you have any advice on mom life and how to help with development more? My toddler is pretty behind in all areas even with therapies and im trying to cut back on tv and store trips and stimulating toys but its hard habits to break. I stuggle to stay present. Also advice for connecting with husbands more, i have no sex drive and him upset about all my decluttering and negative thinking doesnt help lol ❤

I just found your channel and it’s by far my favorite channel to watch and find some peace. The one thing I would suggest is to stock up your pantry. Our country will be facing a food shortage in the near future. Also, as crazy as it sounds we are headed into a depression. If you can please take a moment and check out Appalachian Homestead with Patara on UA-cam. I believe God is using her to reach as many people as possible to warn them of what is coming.
