STORYLINE
The first Indonesian troops arrived in Beirut on Friday to join a UN peacekeeping force monitoring the cease-fire between Israel and the armed group Hezbollah.
The 125-member advance team, which had seen its departure delayed several times, will prepare for the arrival of the remaining 8-hundred troops later this month.
Among those who boarded on US Air Force flight was 1st Lt. Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, son of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who volunteered for the mission.
He was seen off by his father, a retired army general.
Brigadier General Sonny Prasetyo, said the Indonesian contingent would fulfil the mandate of U.N. resolution 1701.
"Now we are trying to contribute our troops in order to support the UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) force's task in Lebanon," he said.
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, was quick to offer troops to the UN mission enforcing a cease-fire months after Israel and Hezbollah fought a devastating war.
The UN force has more than 6-thousand soldiers in Lebanon, but is expected to grow to 15-thousand.
Armoured personnel carriers, trucks and ambulances emblazoned with white UN markings for the mission left Indonesia on Saturday aboard a US-flagged ship, the SS Wilson, the US Embassy said.
