Man I miss Larry. We would go to his shop in Springfield and buy used equipment from him. The stories he had were awesome! I watched him throw a jack, handle and all, through the door of Kenny Dickensons car one night. The man was a LEGEND! RIP 75

Like Mark said, I had heard of Larry Phillips but never saw him race. He was in Stock Car magazine and that's how I'd heard of him. I think one photo was of his whole car about 2 ft. off the ground. There's young Mark Martin cleaning out a Camaro to build a stock car. How many Cup drivers today started that way?

I grew up in Muskogee Ok. Watched hundreds of races at thunderbird speedway. When Larry Phillips came to town it was expected everyone else was an afterthought. He literally dominated the 5/8 mile oval. He was amazing. He didn't have time to be mess around with anyone, he just raced. He was the original GOAT. Many great Larry memories.

If Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace say he Deserves Hall of Fame Status, then that should be Good Enough For NASCAR as They Raced Against the Man and are Hall of Famers.

From 1989 to 1999 Larry Phillips win 220 of 289 NASCAR sanctioned races and 5 NASCAR National Championships in the NASCAR sanctioned Winston Weekly Racing Series. He had a winning percentage of 76.1% in the NASCAR Winston Weekly Racing Series during that stretch from 1989 to 1999..

Kenny and Mark are spot on. The NASCAR HOF is not about honoring the ones who built the sport. They want to put the flavor of the week in the HOF instead of the ones that deserve to be in it.

When I raced in the nascar winston racing series in the 90's, Larry Phillips was dominating year after year. He earned a spot in the nascar hall of fame.

I grew up in Springfield, MO, and all through the 70s, I was at the Fairgrounds Speedway every weekend. Shrader, Wallace, Martin and many others who went on to have successful careers. One Friday they were giving away prizes based on ticket stubs. I won a lap around the track with the driver of my choice, so of course I chose Larry. Big thrill for a 12 year old. I asked Larry if he could go any faster and he said "Insurance won't let me, kid".

Here we had a 2 night season ending race at Colorado National Speedway called the Colorado Challenge Cup. Every year, Larry would come out here and completely DOMINATE the race. He was one hell of a racer!

Best NASCAR driver ever! Fortunate to have raced against him once in an Australian Pursuit race at Lakeside. Also at the 1991 NASCAR Banquet he had a message for me about the True Value Gold Wrench Award. Long long long overdue!

When I was a kid in the 1990’s I watched Larry whoop up on everybody at Lebanon I44 Speedway and at Bolivar Speedway USA. The man was just a master at driving a late model. I still have his autograph on a shirt.

I think Larry is well known amongst us old timers in the Midwest and south. He came to Tennessee when I was a young man and you knew the race was pretty much done. If Larry was in town and he didn’t win it was big news. It’s a shame he isn’t in the hall.

Unfortunately, the NASCAR Hall of Fame has become much like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are choosing younger recipients for viewership over legends that made the sport what it is today. The bad thing is, most of these drivers won't live to see them recognized over someone like Kyle Busch or Denny Hamlin that will be inducted within five years after retiring from driving.

When asked if he had the most wins in short track history, Larry always said that whatever his count was, it was one less that Dick Trickle had. The first time that I ever met Larry in person, Ricky Icenhower and myself walked into his shop when we were about 17 and we wanted him to bend the metal for a go-cart that we were going to put a 440 Husqvarna engine on. He said, "hell no, you dumb sons a bitches are gonna kill yourselves." Then told Ricky to have his Dad, Richard call him so that he could tell him that he was raising a dumb-ass and that he was hanging out with other dumbasses! Had to live the honesty.

Give it time. It took a long time for non-Cup guys to be recognized for their greatness. Look how long it took for Ritchie Evans & Mike Stefanik, modified legends, to be inducted.
Larry will get his due eventually.
