Thank you!! :) It helps that this paper is really nice, I think. Good paper really saves the day :) I'll call it a "collaborative mixed media painting", lol
It really is amazing how cheap your other supplies can be as long as the paper is a good quality! And make sure your cats get proper compensation with head scratches and treats, lol.
thanks so much for reviewing the less expensive supplies. I am an artist and prefer artist grade but I have an 8 year old budding artist at home. I love knowing how the beginner supplies are going to perform. Plus it's really nice to see someone else struggling with the ever present cat hair in the paint...lol😃😃
Thank you for watching! :) The ever present cat-hair struggle, lol I'm happy when I can review the less expensive stuff, young budding artists should have access to decent and inexpensive stuff to explore their creativity :)
I bought the 24 tube set on Temu for $10. Never tried gouache before so I’m pretty pumped to try it at such a price. I’ve only ever painted with Windsor and newton student grade and grabie water color.
I paint with Marie's Gouache paint all the time. I use it similarly to watercolour so i might not realise about the quality. But it's basically the most popular brand in Chinese stores so, not bad.
Holbein and M.Graham are higher quality paints so they'd probably cost you more, but they would be lightfast and more pigment-rich. Did you end up going for any of those? :)
Thanks for this review. I agree with you that Marie's paints are okay to practice with. It was my first set of watercolors I ever bought (was on sale for $5 for an 18 tube set!) and I set them up in a John Pike large palette. I wasn't crazy about them and put them up on a high shelf. Over a year later I decided to try them again and I tipped the palette as I brought it off the shelf and all of the paints had cracked into little nuggets and were all jumbled up in the mixing area. To amuse myself I sorted and rewet them into the wells while watching television and today they still sit there up on the high shelf. I will eventually get rid of them as the palette costs way more than the paints, lol! Don't think I will buy Marie's again. If I want to put the time and effort into something I want better quality products, but they are good to take to work and you don't care if they disappear! Paula in Florida
Haha, those watercolors are indeed worth less than the palette you put them in.... Did they rewet ok? Do you know what you'd put in that nice palette instead? :D
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault Hi Eve! Yes, they did reset just fine, but if I knew better back then I would have put them in a cheap palette and added glycerine or honey. When I get around to emptying out the Marie's paint I will put in some artist's quality - M. Graham, Schmincke, Sennelier, Qor, Winsor Newton, etc. I have a porcelain Stephen Quiller palette that my Daniel Smiths are going in, and of course a metal travel palette!
UA-cam keeps recommending this video to me even though I’ve already seen it so I figured I’d pop in and say helooooooo cheap gouache!!! Your days are NUMBERED. Mua ha ha ha ha.
Thanks a lot, this video is very useful. I'm planning on experimenting on gouache, and am agonizing between marie's and reeves. I think I'm gonna buy this brand though, because reeves in my area is twice the price and I don't see much difference in the quality. :) By the way, you are very talented...
I wanted to ask if this paint smell bad? I want to buy this to learn gouache, I have reeves gouache but they smell so bad (a very strong chemical scent) that i havent touched it again ! And holbein cost too much at the moment 😭
Thanks Karia! I don't know much about gouache either since I recently got to it, but I enjoy learning about it! Any kind of painting is the best part of learning ;)
Thanks for video ! Just bought the " Memory " gouache ( chinese ) . 7 Euros for 24 and they are like Marie's . The white is beige so i take a Winsor & Newton white . In some tubes the color is more liquid but it's OK .
Thanks for watching! :) If you haven't tried it already, you can try to stir the tubes with the liquid paint by using a toothpick, sometimes that helps with the texture. Affordable gouaches are great for testing the medium and sketchbook practice work :)
I have a very cheap set (Royal and Langnickle) which I have swatched out, but haven't used it since. I also have a primary set of W&N which I have also swatched out. I stopped short of using them because I was going crazy buying different brands of watercolor at the time and didn't want to sidetrack myself by jumping to a different medium. My question is, have you tried other brands? What do you think of them? I heard that if you use a mixture of 15% white gouache to 85% watercolor that you can turn any watercolor into gouache. Have you done this?
I haven't been playing with gouaches for long so my experience at the moment is limited. I've been doing the thing with the white gouache and watercolors, but I'm still trying to figure out how to work the ratios to the effect I want. So far, I'm pretty sure that this technique works best with fresh-out-of-the-tube paints rather than dried down paints. I've been using M.Graham's white gouache for that since it's the most affordable, highest quality I can find here. I also have tubes of W&N, one Holbein, a few more M.Graham and the Shinhan Pass gouaches, I should be making videos about them in the future, as I get more familiar with the medium :)
Thanks for the video Eve! It was quite interesting. Question: Did you notice an odor when squeezing the paint into the palette? I heard there was an odor with the watercolors?
Hi Victor! I took a good moment to sniff out those paints (because I've had my fair share of smelly watercolors in the past) and didn't notice any smell! Come to think of it, I really should've mentioned that in my list of "pro" for this set: "doesn't stink" :D
I would love it if companies actually put it on their websites if the paints smell. I`m really sensible when it comes to smells. They can take away all the fun in painting :/ Sometimes the smell goes away after a while though.
To be honest, I had to give away my set of Turner watercolors because I couldn't stand the smell when I started squeezing paint onto my palette. It wasn't a great experience.
I have this set and it does take some getting used to since gouache is a weird medium but the results are pretty nice, I use it for practice on my sketchbook so I'm not worried about light fastness and such, my only complaint, like you said the white tube is not enough, a second one should be added but what can you do? buy a larger tube and it does not include rose/magenta either so you have to buy that one too (boo!) my favourite color has to be brilliant purple. While some artists tend to work gouache by applying simplified brush strokes I tend to try being more realistic but I do that with everything even when I think to myself just to relax and draw more simple, but I always end up being extra lol :p Also, if you want to set up a palette but want to avoid the cracking you can apply a little honey in each colour and mix it up, it will give a more creamy consistency.
The Crimson color can, to some extent, make a nice pink but it's limited. Especially with that beige-white color. How was the white color in your set? Was it truly white? Mixing honey in the gouache is a good idea, but I can also just squeeze some out each time. I enjoy squeezing paint a lot, so that might be my preferred option ;)
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault I actually went crazy on the white and used the whole tube to create new pastel and skin tones colors xD luckily I bought a second box of the same set as a backup and just made the comparison with a large Caran D'ache white tube that I later bought and yeah the Maries one is kind of dirty, not 100% white, might use it to make more mixes. Do you intend to review more gouache brands? Coz that would be cool
Yes, I will be reviewing more gouaches! I'm trying to make a bit more learning mileage behind the scenes before I review other sets, but I really like them! :)
Thank you! :) I agree, it's a good set for beginners. It helps having a bit more knowledge about the medium so I can work around its issues, but then again it was only 10$. I've seen Starbucks items that cost more than that XD
I'm experimenting using gouache transparently to opaquely. And, also adding whites. I know it's "against the law" in traditional watercolor, but it's something different to try.
Oh, I don't consider white gouache "against the law", I think it's a super nice way to work with watercolors to get opaque results. At least, white gouache is opaque. I get annoyed when it's white watercolor, and weak ones too, because I fail to see the point. They just kill the brightness of the color. If one wants to stretch a watercolor or dilute it, better use plain water. To make watercolor opaque; white gouache. Hehe :)
It's a bit of both, maybe? I'm pretty sure sure I cleaned my brush fine but I could be wrong and maybe some leftover burnt sienna was in there.... but the paint isn't white even on the palette. Might not show well on camera but it's an off-white color that dries darker to a beige, a color like buff titanium. It's off-putting when one is used to the perfect bright color of M.Graham's titanium white gouache :)
Bwahahaha!! I am SO glad I'm not alone in the "stubborn cat hair" department! Is it sad that I have considered intentionally placing a hair on every painting I do as a sort of trademark? ROFL P.S. You're babies are adorable! Mine are currently winding down from their recent workout. I knew I was in trouble when the ears went flat out sideways, their pupils became huge black saucers, and they went total racoon tail. Gotta love 'em!
Hahaha! Gotta love the black saucer eyes and flat ears! Mine don't get all puffy-tailed, but they start making weird noises and we can tell "crazy time" is upon us XD And the hair situation is ridiculous. We brush them, vaccum, but their fur is so fine that the hairs still end up everywhere. It makes for super soft and fluffy cats, but it's bothersome for painting lol. Might have to take up on that intentional hair idea XD
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault Oh yeah, I forgot the talking. I don't know how, because they make that warning siren every time. they are currently doing laps again. I heard torties have "tude" which might have some truth behind it, because mine are the ones currently playing the zoom game, sending everything that's not tied down flying to the ground and leaving a mini furnado in their wake. Hubs and I have decided that our next place will have a dedicated studio, which will be cat-free. Hmm I wonder why? lol
Oh! So you have torties? (More than one?? You are BRAVE). These cats have a lot of 'tude!! We always make fun of ours because of that XD And she's the one always trying to break the speed of sound in our appartment lol, she doesn't even break. She just skids sideway and start again.
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault Oh yes, mine love to run around and bounce of the walls. I love it when they start to run, but get no traction, or "drift" when they go to turn. You can't tell in the picture, but she's a torbie. Her tabby pattern is tortie colored. Her nickname is "mouth" due to her severe case of logorrhea. lol!
Lately I have been really wanting to try gouache. But I'm not sure which brand to get. I really like bright colors and it seems that Holbein is the only brand that have those. These paints seems to be perfect just trying out gouache :D I'm not yet sure will I like they opaqueness or not. So I may try these first.
Maybe you could check out the ShinHan Pass gouaches, they have a lot of bright colors ( www.creativebloq.com/reviews/pass-color-hybrid-paints ). Jackson's sells them in set and in single tubes and they are very affordable, so you can easily pick up a few tubes to try, if you want :)
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault I have one tube of shinhann pass, one bright green xD but I'm not huge fan of them, they don't rewet well and I feel that they are bit streaky.
I would love to see review of them! I'm not sure is it just the color I have or all the colors. Mine is Linder green. They would be better option for me, since they are quite affortable and easier to get than Holbeins. Also less chalky than regular gouache.
I will review them, of course! :) I'm super excited because they have a fairly unique color lineup, with many colors featuring fluo pigments so they are suuuper bright and vivid! And it's less "traditional". They look super nice :)
I don't know how well it would mix with other brands (possibly fine, but one never knows unless they try it). It's super inexpensive but since you already have a good Holbein set, maybe it'd be better to slowly fill in the gaps with Holbein colors? At least you'd have the same constant in the product and a reliable outcome :)
Hi Eve I have a set of Stradler 24 watercolors that I picked up from Hobby Lobby $20 then used 40 percent off coupon I have been needing to start up a you tube channel I will get this out this weekend and you can decide... thanks for a great video
Great video Eve! 😁 I haven't tried any of the Marie brand. I think most of them are marketed here as student quality. Though if you're short on cash & just want to art, I say go for whatever you can get. 😉
Thanks Val! I agree, these are very decent paints to art at a low price! They are also sold as a student quality item here (the pricetag is enough of a tell in that regard). Anyone crafty and willing enough will make fun things out of these paints ;)
As these are gouache, I'm not sure how chalky would work here... They are semi-opaque to opaque, with some colors like the green being more semi-transparent.
Hi, Gilberto. Your comment is very interesting (I have not used Lukas watercolors, although I understood that it was a good brand) but I remember buying oil pastels from Marie`s at the beginning of the last decade, they were dry and smelled strange. I also tried buying watercolors, and I remember that the pigment was separated from a transparent liquid (it looked like water and oil inside a tube). The color quality of both products left a lot to be desired, so I do not recommend this brand to anyone. But that was almost 20 years ago, and maybe the company changed the chemical formulas and improved the quality of their products.
I love how you make such lovely paintings with cheap supplies! And if you can't get the cat hair out, just call it a "mixed media" painting. ;D
Thank you!! :) It helps that this paper is really nice, I think. Good paper really saves the day :)
I'll call it a "collaborative mixed media painting", lol
It really is amazing how cheap your other supplies can be as long as the paper is a good quality! And make sure your cats get proper compensation with head scratches and treats, lol.
Yes! :D
My cats' idea of a treat is basically just more food. They really love it, haaaardcore XD
genious
hahahaha

Your painting ability is amazing. It makes me want to get them.
That's very helpful to know about the white especially
That purple is gorgeous!
I bought the 24 tube set on Temu for $10. Never tried gouache before so I’m pretty pumped to try it at such a price. I’ve only ever painted with Windsor and newton student grade and grabie water color.

It's also very affordable, usually. :)

I just thought of buying this set or the Holbein 12 set. The M Graham primaries set is tempting too.
Holbein and M.Graham are higher quality paints so they'd probably cost you more, but they would be lightfast and more pigment-rich. Did you end up going for any of those? :)

Love the texture of the painting thank you for the review
Thank you! :)

Gouache is harder to clean form brushes so the white became beige beacuse you probably had some brown on the brush! On the pallete it looked normal!

Hi Carla! Thank you! :)
It would be great to have a review of this product! I've never heard of it!
Great gouache! But where'd you get your date stamper? :)
I got it from Staples, most stores that sell office supplies probably have them :)
Mam are you mixing the oil paint with water?
What oil paint? This is gouache :)
beautiful....
Thank you! :)
I really love how the second study came out, so foggy~
Thank you! :)
Moody scenes are a lot of fun to paint!
i feel that this is a good brand to start with. so if you messed up, its okay. hahahaha. im using this as im still learning ehhe
It's a good first step into gouache! :)
Your studies are beautiful.
Thank you! :)
Is maries chalky?
As these are gouache, I'm not sure how chalky would work here... They are semi-opaque to opaque, with some colors like the green being more semi-transparent.
Nice video Eve, excelent video...but in my personal experience all Marie products suck!!!
María J García i have an Lukas Marie's watercolor of 12.
they seem to be a paint for sumie. ( For what Marie's is a good brand.)
