This quote was SPOT ON. I watched the first few episodes of this show when it came out and I had to stop because she was so goddam annoying 😂
Bay and Daphne are actually 6 years apart in real life. When the show started Katie Leclerc was 25 and Vanessa Marano was 19 lol.
I knew she was familiar lol
She's Lauro Marano's sister
@@nanaadowaa Vanessa also played Luke's daughter on the show Gilmore girls.
i guess im terrible with age because i dont see the age difference e
Yes
vanessa was 19??? dang i thought she was younger
The hook of Switched at Birth, is not the “ they were switched at birth,” thing. It about Deaf representation. The show had three central characters who were Deaf, two who were played by actors who were Deaf and one who was hard of hearing, and several other secondary characters who were Deaf and played by Deaf actors, And the show was about Deaf culture. There was no other show on TV that had that. And that is the reason it was so special to its audience, and lasted for 5 season.
Disagree. The deaf thing is a big part of it, but that's not the hook. Even the fact that Daphne is deaf is dependent on her having been switched.
Akia Sembly if the show was just about how they survived being switched at birth then it would have stopped being interesting after the second or third season. By the end of the show the two switched girls are calling each other sister. The families have fully integrated into one. Basically they came to terms with it and were over it. If the writers relied on that as the main plot devise they would have stopped finding interesting way to have, “because they were switched at birth” be any factor in the plot points. But Daphne’s deafness, as well as the deafness of the other several main deaf characters keeps being a major factor in the characters story lines because that is the real main plot devise. If the shows principle objective was not deaf representation, then they wouldn’t have included more then one deaf character, or worked so hard to expose real deaf culture and the real life experiences, challenges, and discrimination that the deaf community deals with. Deaf representation was what the writers and creators of the show were really after. The “switched at birth” angle was the interesting plot device they’d used to push the real agenda. Agenda makes it sound nefarious in some way, but u know what I mean.
@@Jah_LEASE_yah Do you have any basis, other than the show's having more than one deaf character, for a show called Switched At Birth not being about two girls who were switched at birth?
Akia Sembly if you don’t know about deaf culture u can’t really understand it. I’m not saying that that show was not about two girls that switched at birth. I’m saying that wasn’t the heart of the show. Deaf representation was the real heart. And if u studied deaf culture, or if your are involved in deaf culture, either as a Deaf person or as a friend or family member, you’ll see how much attention and care the writer took to exposing deaf culture and the experiences of Deaf people. Also the show didn’t just have Deaf characters. it hired real deaf and hard of hearing actors. That might not seem significant but it is. It shows how important it was for the creators to genuinely and honestly portray deaf culture. They didn’t take that much care to hire real Puerto Rican’s to portray Puerto Rican characters but they did with deaf characters because that was what they cared about the most. Deaf representation.
thank you! i felt like that comment was an insult to the show tbh

This show really opened my eyes about the deaf community and I ended up being really interested in ASL after it.

You know you’re in the hood if the “Ice Cream” man is on the block at 10pm.

Nah, our local dealer had a bright gold suv. When he got busted the van got repoed and is now the school lesion officers van.
Actually there is a completely different neighbour hood right behind our house and there an ice cream truck drives like at 2 am when I am awake and it’s so weird but luckily we are moving out soon

Big mood. That was my show 😂
It’s my guilty pleasure
no. it is FUN! buffy the vampire slayer just less dramatic
Omg yess!! I used to love that show
I always saw the commercials but I thought it was pretty dumb and then one day I accidentally started watching a couple episodes as they came on after the shows I was watching, and I actually started to like it, yet I was old enough that I kept being like "WAIT WHY IS THAT ORB A DEMON?" "IF THEY KNOW IT'S EVIL WHY ARE THEY STILL HOLDING IT!?" "WHY DOESN'T HE JUST TELL HER HE LIKES HIM IF SHE ALREADY LIKES HIM BACK!?" XD you know, standard 12 year old questions
I dated a deaf girl throughout college... Believe me, she was not handicapped. Ill admit At first i saw it as an impairment, but I quickly learned this was a very very wrong way of thinking. She would get upset at how people felt bad..or took pity on her. All I can say is this.. Treat everyone you meet the same. No matter if they're deaf, able to hear or whatever...from their point of view that's how they experience the world and developed in it. It is normal for them. So they are normal.
@@tomsparey176 lol

Not just at night
Sweet tooth is in the neighborhood
Ice cream trucks come around even in the winter in my neighborhood 😭
@@joRA848 no
Dunno if it's just a coincidence, but to give some possible context to the out of place ice cream truck, I grew up in a pretty dodgy neighbourhood and we had an ice cream truck that would drive around once in the afternoon and sell ice cream and again at like 10 or 11 at night where the guy would also sell drugs. I never really thought about whether it was a common thing or not, but maybe that's what they were going for?
An oddly specific angle. I feel like 95% of people would be like, why is there an Ice-cream truck at night?
@@Athkore Absolutely. Which is why I doubt it's what they were actually going for but who knows, I'm just trying to think of any possible way in which that ice cream truck could be justified
I remember visiting my family in Puerto rico and at night one time an ice cream truck drove by but it sold donuts. Weird I know...
Wait donuts? Uh, yes!
i thought maybe he was also kinda realizing how much daphne couldn’t hear in her own neighborhood instead of it just being him realizing it’s a bad neighborhood
The entire show was Bay being abandoned by both sides of her family (fake parents and real mom) and that pissed me off so much xD I will add, tho, her birth dad accepted her extremely well, and then they KILLED HIM.
It always makes me mad how they baby Daphnie so much and don’t pay attention to bay, or make her out to be a huge outcast.
Rigbt?! I hated that and after finding out about the guitar case I started to not trust her I mean I understand her pov but it still was a lot to take in
And both sides of the family kept saying or implying that Bay is the trouble child but when you look at it, Daphne's a freaking mess. I mean, I'm not saying Bay doesn't have issues but Daphne is more impulsive and goes over drama. Bay, on the other hand, focuses on her art and finding herself.
@@michiko1086 When Bay struggled it hurt her. When Daphne struggled it hurt everybody around her.
@@MuzzyBarker Exactly. And just the pilot alone. When they first met Daphne. Everyone simply wanted her. At that point, Regina wasn't that interested in getting to know Bay as much as Katherine and John wanted to spend time with Daphne. So it was frustrating to see Bay try to fit in either families and struggle on her own.

Killa Barbie now I want to know too

the mystery is killing me! were they switched back?
Yo what happened
This show is actually really underrated. It's actually so good
The "Daphne lives in a rough neighborhood" scene might have been a tad more dramatic had there not been a random ice cream truck driving past playing a tune AT NIGHT, for some reason. Still, at least it gave "The Soup" something to lampoon!😁🍦🍧
Caitriona Quigley Lmaaao
I actually felt a little creeped out by it. Lol
Gurl OKAYY SO I LIVE "in the hood" and no joke ... There was an ice cream truck late at night...but the sounds weren't on
I know it might seem creepy, but the man who sells ice cream is like a family fren and his only car is the ice cream truck so... Its not the "unusual" in "the hood" 😂😂😂😂
Actually the ice cream truck thing happens in my country. Don't know what kid would be awake for ice cream by 11pm but the ice cream is good.
To be honest, the ice cream truck was so "wtf..." and out of place that it DID make the neighborhood feel more creepy. It's like... in *what* neighborhood is there an ice cream truck at night. It actually does make me NOT want to be in that sort of neighborhood.
I love this show, the later seasons are much better than the first one (part of me actually hates the first season). Bay’s character development is fantastic and she ended up being such a cinnamon roll and my favorite character
Emmet tho 😍
They ruined Emmet in the last ones 🤐💔
@@lizzy4827 emmet really annoyed me in the last two seasons. He had moved to LA and was such a jerk. He wanted to be able to date whoever he wanted but he didn’t want Bay to date anyone. I didn’t like his character development

It's a percentage because all humans are related in a way, at least in 2020. It is in that sense. But if you knew that already, the joke is nice
It' weird that the show got this wrong. If they aren't related, you can say it with a 100% certainty. But if they are related you can only say it with a 99.something % certainty.
3:20 I actually always thought that scene was about him hearing all of the sounds and realizing that Daphne can't hear them
It is kinda. It’s him realizing she doesn’t know how bad her neighborhood is because she can’t hear it
@@samfielder8789 that makes sense!

Ghefira Sonia , if i knew her , and i was in that room. yeah i probably could tell. it's not only just being around the person, it's body language and literally everything. hearing people depend on their ears so much you don't really notice other things. it's literally natural for me, you can tell by the weight of footsteps, literally everything. you could probably tell what bay's saying based on how her upper half of her face is questioning something and it's just really easy to read her. and that's from an actress, say real emotions, those are easy to read . it's not as difficult as it sounds tbh.

I loved this show! Just hated the whole "boys are so important" to create this all around drama, but thats teen shows for you. Wished they could continue it. The show inspired my sister to learn sign language. Should try watching Recovery Road. Another show that was on Freeform based on a book, but was sadly cancelled after one season.
i think that switched at birth started off as mediocre and grew into something so fascinating and mature, but then went back down to mediocre and annoying after they forced a fifth season onto the show. but even during the fifth season the characters had grown a lot and matured and had learned a lot of life lessons and i think it's important for that to happen in teen shows. i also think that after they got over a lot of the boy drama the show was very realistic with how they tackled subjects. honestly in my opinion this show will always be remembered by me as something that took itself seriously.
definitely agree with you! everything was passable all up to the 5th season. While it was not bad, it was just too forced and left a somehow bittersweet ending to the show.

@@מעין-צ9ג We have a running joke that my daughter was switched at birth.
She was born at home.
I agree the teen drama of Switched at Birth went in odd places but for me (a hearing person) the point and importance of the show was its Deaf Culture representation. This is most likely why my ASL Instructor suggested it. In the medium of television and film where deaf characters are only used in brief cameos Switched at Birth displayed not only American Sign Language but the life and daily challenges of the deaf and hard of hearing allowing a brief glimpse into their culture. In their Second Season, they stepped up this message with the episode "Uprising" where all the sound was turned off (just not the background music) for an entire episode that used only American Sign Language. The first time ever on television. It showed the application of the language as well as the heart of the characters and families who used it. I stayed with this with the show for the lessons I got to walk away with, and what teen drama has ever done that?
very agreeable. u hit the nail right on the head.
I completely agree, I wish Alex had recognized that, it had a lot of cultural value
No one is denying that more deaf actors/characters being represented is a good thing. And Switched at Birth deserves credit for presenting deaf culture and ASL to young viewers in an accessible way. But that doesn't change the fact that a lot of the story lines in that show were pure garbage.
Honestly, when I watched the show, I was disappointed that a lot of the shitty teen drama overshadowed the more interesting aspects like deaf culture and what it means to learn that you're not the ethnicity you thought you were.
thank you for commenting!! i was about to say this exactly.
MsBrendalina in my opinion, the show got better. the first season’s storylines were pretty trash simply because they were teenagers but as they got older they started maturing and it was pleasant to watch the girls having to grow up and tackle huge problems that are bound to come their way as they virtually become adults. i don’t think it’s fair to judge a show specifically for its first season, or any one season at all. one season or episode does not define the entire show.
I remember I was really hooked on this show about three years ago then just decided to just completey drop it one night. I think it was after an unecessarily dramatic episode that I was just like... Nah

@@Jazmin_Tea I must say I haven't finished the show yet and it's been years since the last time I've watched it,but I'm pretty sure I've watched most seasons and I AM sure I remember being genuinely surprised by how much sense ALL the actions of ALL the characters made, considering backgrounds, circumstances AND the fact sometimes in real life people DO some stupid things for stupid reasons. My point is that even when you find yourself telling a character:"Why the hell did you do that?!?>:-O"you can actually answer yourself:"OK,I GET why you did that 🙄,but,still...you could avoid that!🤦♂️"and it's not the same as thinking:"This thing you just did makes NO SENSE AT ALL!X-P"
this show really sparked my interest with learning asl, and although i still don’t know it, i’m still interested. i’m just not good with languages in general-
Check out Rochelle Barrow here on UA-cam. She taught me some stuff.
Oh sweet! Thank you!
@@amorfatikhb Welcome! It was fun for me
It got me to learn ASL and try and fail at becoming an interpreting major but i know ASL.
Same. I started watching UA-cam videos on learning sign language. I only learned a few things tho 🤣
6:14 you would’ve never lived that down if he was related😂
I stopped watching at the third season because most of the characters got really irritating. Bay was honestly the only decent character, but no one really cared about her and everyone was fawning over the other daughter, even Bay’s biological mother. And then it was a big NOPE from me when Daphne (teenage, I think 15 or 16 at that time) got into a relationship with her much older boss and the show was doing absolutely NOTHING to show how wrong it all was.
i don't know why ABC Family always does that :( its so immoral to normalize that stuff to a primarily adolescent audience
bay was the most annoying one of all of them daphine was right behind her the two main characters were terrible people
rewatch the show again they would constantly ruin other people lives do things they knew were wrong completely ruined others but somehow they deserved happiness in the end when in reality they are two terrible people who constant would do people wrong then wonder why their own life eventually became shitty due to their own consequences that they were making
As the show went on Daphne got more and more annoying. She made it super hard for me to watch. Couldn’t stand her by the end of it
Why
Why what happens? I gave up after like ep 5
Both girls got annoying and bitchy.
Same
It was like Bey finally had to grow up.... but then who will be annoying and whiney?? Oh look Daphne!! ☹🤦♀️
That's right...
*She's a redhead.*
switched at birth actually has amazing representation of real life injustices, after season 1 or 2 it's actually quite a well rounded show
I used to love this show I'm glad you made a video about it
This kinda reminded me of the parent trap in some way
Who here seen it
I have seen two different versions of The Parent Trap.
Ya Boi yes
Who hasn’t seen parent trap lmao
Who hasn't?
Before that I knew the story as I grew up with it cuz there's an Indian ver of it that was made even yrs before that. But I love Parent Trap so much more
Mom* What's that in your nose?
Bay* it's a stud, wanna see?
Alex* bududup
Alex's impression of a stud* hey baby girl
Me* on the ground dying of laughter
Hahahahaha
@Kanoa Sari awww I miss Johnny Bravo
Bay and Daphne develops a sisterhood that is so fullfilling to watch. They all become a great family and I love all the members. Eventually in season 3 Daphne becomes annoying as hell but by the end of it she grows on me again. All of the characters have a development and is really good. I started learning sign language with the show, but unfortunatly it's not the same for my country. I haven't watched seasons 4 and 5 because Netflix here doesn't have SaB in its catalog anymore :(
that's seriously upsetting! id like to say that switched at birth started off as a mediocre teen drama that grew into people maturing into adults and making serious decisions. it tackles a lot of tough subjects. although the series was pretty stupid by its fifth season it still never really let go of the idea of being realistic in it's own fictional way. i'd honestly recommend watching the fourth season but stay away from the fifth if you don't want the rest of the show to be disappointing. and yes, the cliffhanger at the end of season 4 looks good but it's really lazy so yeah. at the end of the day, i'll always remember this show because of how unique it is.
@@eVidentt that's so sad to read! I'll watch the final season regardless because I don't like to give up on shows I've already watched and enjoyed most of it. Even if it's bad, it's clousure, to me. Like Once Upon a Time was. Anyway, I agree, SaB always gave us storylines to think about. By the end of the day, it's a show about family and it gives me a good feeling.
Kath I agree. I loved the last season because they involved a baby with Down syndrome. It was very relatable for me... (I went through something similar after having my daughter with Down syndrome) so it really meant a lot to me.
You're not missing anything by skipping the last two seasons. It went downhill.
i felt like with season 5 their job was done. bay and daphne had graduated from university or college and the end of season 4 could’ve been satisfactory if they didn’t add so many unnecessary cliff hangers that were underwhelming when the fifth season aired about 6 months later than it should’ve. with the fifth season, they just tried to force so many political topics that didn’t really need to be political. i don’t want to spoil anything but there was something that happened to bay in season 4 that was horrible but at the end of the day it could’ve happened to anybody and the way they dealt with it seemed realistic. the fifth season to me was underwhelming and disappointing but that’s fine because the show had served its purpose at the end of the day and no matter what season you’re on you’re still going to see what you came to watch.
the ice cream truck got me too, like what is going on here????
Haha. It’s because they dad is having a realization that there is a whole world going on outside and Daphne can’t hear any of it.
I actually love this show. Especially the last couple seasons. The main characters mature a lot more and the drama becomes way less stupid and more serious.
As someone who watched the whole show, it actually has good moments. They dealt with rape better than 13RW, and has good messages about race and privilege.
Daphne's deafness is a big part of the show too. Which as a HOH kid, it was great to have a character I could connect too.
It's a great family drama imo and it helped me connect with my mom.
5:24 - the joke here is that school sucks for everyone, deaf or "hearie" NOT that deaf kids DON'T have struggles. So dont take it the wrong way :)
Brunette- so have you ever...you know..felt different?
Ginger: yeah....I'm deaf
I usually love these videos but honestly I disagreed with this one. The thing that drives this one in a lot of ways isn’t that it’s a teen drama about two switched girls but it’s a teen drama happening in part in the Deaf community. As a hard of hearing individual with a number of deaf friends there are so many things on this show that are done well that aren’t seen on other shows and it raises huge awareness for the difficulties and stigmas people in the Deaf and HoH community face. I personally loved how this show used asl a lot and I really love the characters (who do develop a lot) the pilot I’ll admit wasn’t the best but it’s one of the only dramas out there and one of the few shows that featured the Deaf community heavily. This is amazing for me especially since Deaf and HoH actors and actresses usually are getting turned away from jobs because they’re not hearing in this show all the Deaf characters are played by Deaf or HoH actors and actresses. It was an incredible show for that reason and also the characters are just fun and very relatable
I completely agree, I wish Alex had touched on it and recognized its value instead of just rendering it as "dumb" for entertainment purposes
Audrey R I mean the points he made are valid; you can’t keep a show running off of just the basis of being switched at birth and they didn’t, they branched out to other things. but it felt like a natural progression of the show and I felt like it was one of a kind in a lot of ways. I loved that their diversity inclusion wasn’t just gender and race based like so many shows but it features differently abled people, regular sized people (not just the skinny skinny models) and of course the Deaf representation is a huge part of the story. The people looked more like the kind of people o see every day and they had difficulties that normal every day people face not just the problems that only seem to happen on tv (but there were some of those too) also I love that when facing difficult issues like sexual assault and racism they were very balanced and showed a lot of different viewpoints. I love that they have characters who don’t agree politically and still get along, I love so many things about the show that you just don’t see in the pilot which is part of why I think you shouldn’t base your judgement entirely off a pilot because pilots are usually so different from the rest of the show in a ton of ways
@@awkwardsity I mean, Switched at Birth was really a fucking dumb show. And this is coming to the basis of a Deaf person.
NeverMindGaming it’s not that I disagree, in a lot of ways it’s nothing special, but for those of us in and around the Deaf community it’s special
please do kyle xy next !!!
Chelsea & Franz oh my god that show
GOD YES I USED TO LOVE THAT SHOW

What kind of Shows/Movies does Alex Meyers like?
I forgot this show existed. I used to be obsessed with this show
Things I like about the show: 1) I learn more about the deaf community, culture and people. 2) The deaf characters were played by actors who are deaf or hard of hearing. Btw, there are more than 1 main character that is deaf.
Both Daphne and Bay were the brattiest characters I’ve ever seen on a show. And it felt like if u missed 2 episodes u missed like weeks of a story cuz everything moved incredibly fast. Plus they recycled boys and story over and over again -_-
J Lo Bay wasn’t that bad, she maybe started off that way, but she was a great person and grew from mistakes. Very unlike Daphne
@@whycaninotfindagood true #teamBay
I stopped watching this show because both these characters became super annoying and brats
I used to love it but then my mom cut me off because she didn’t want me Turning into a brat
@@ohno7018 That makes no sense at all. I recommend that you watch it if you can.
The show is not just about the girls being switched. It's about the whole family and how they all deal with the situation individually. It also draws a lot of attention to the deaf community and deaf culture. Because of this movie, so many hearing people started to understand deaf diversity and wanted to learn ASL. Also if you actually follow the show to the end, you'll get to see how they all grow as a family and each of the girls get to learn more of their background and where they come from and their families and ancestors. It's a beautiful show, which you clearly don't have the emotional stability to handle all the way through.
It’s actually a good show
"yes thats right.... she IS a red head"
😂😂😂😂 yeah THATS the part that has everyone worried
I love this show for its incorporation of ASL and deaf actors/actresses. It made for such a unique show. Netflix's Deaf U is good too (dramatic but good).
Can you watched Charmed 1998? Please. Not the reboot you showed us a picture of the Charmed Reboot. Ewwwww. Please watch the old one.
Adrian SH Have you seen the new “Charmed”? I’m not even sure I wanna watch it aha. The real Charmed (1998) was my first “teen” tv show I fell in love with. It’s so amazing!
The new charmed is literally trash, even when I ignore the fact that they complete dropped everything from the original, it’s a horrible show.
@catheseries I'm a huge fan of the original Charmed and I like the new Charmed. 5 episodes in and not completely disappointed.
Anastasia Hernandez Lucky! I was really hoping to enjoy it. I feel like they only got the charmed rights because they weren’t original enough to create their own witch show
They cancelled the secret circle yet they have that bullshit reboot.
I lost it when the ice cream truck showed up! XD
My sister was obsessed with this show, she tried to learn sign language just because of this show lol
Me too
I love the dig at Daphne's actress. She was 24 when the show started. I thought the same thing when l used to watch it back in the day. I didn't even know it had ended.

6:30 we had a weird ice cream truck come round every night when I was little and all the rumors were that there were kidnappers in the truck
Daphne was completely insufferable by the end of the show.
와우Ɲαi yah To me it was just overall how she acted. By the end it was her blaming everyone else for bad things happening when they were her fault in the first place. I guess she just was acting really entitled and it bothered me when I watched it 😂

@와우Stamped Adventures Ahhh wow!! What?
Daphne was literary the worst character
