Thank you so much for doing this. I think this movie is, while not entirely successful, kind of fascinating, and deserved to be talked about more. I had heard about the longer, more interesting Japanese laserdisc version but given up hope of ever seeing it. But now, thanks you to you, I can, and it's even more interesting. I'm really grateful. Thanks
Thanks for sharing this. Interesting to compare both cuts. This version assumes the audience is intelligent enough to connect many dots, while the recut dumbs it down a bit and eliminates any ambiguity. Those 70s sitcom-style wavy flashbacks Noffe has in the recut are embarrassing. And I prefer Maurice Jarre's full score in the original over the Michael Boddicker synths that replace half of it in the recut. Where I do feel the recut is an improvement is that it does a better job selling the severity of this situation, whereas in this cut everybody was pretty chill considering the world's in danger of coming to an end. I do feel beefing up the role of Borg in the recut was a good choice as well. Overall, I still prefer Sarafian's cut over the Smithee recut, it feels tonally and stylistically more consistent. Thanks again for taking the time to rip this and upload it. I had a good time getting drunk to it while doing impressions of Charlton Heston and Jack Palance.
