    Thanks for the insight of your equipment! Having a good packaging system is so important! Not only for photogrammetry, but for all you do! I made good experiences with my 80L Trekking-Backpack from SHERPA, as I was in the Himalayas for trekking, and later I used it for run'n'gun. That includes equipment like a Photo-camera (EOS 5D), memory cards, batteries, microphone, and several little accessories, and a DJI Inspire 1 Pro v2.0 with about 7-8 batteries to be able a full day of run'n'gun shooting. Don't skimp on price when it comes to backpacks and/or cases.

    • @GrzegorzBaranArt
      @GrzegorzBaranArt  3 роки тому

      80L sounds like really a lot :). How heavy it was when packed? The FirstLight 30l when fully packed has about 11-12kg (24-26lbs). Have heard that the best weight balance set by special forces was to carry a bag which is max 10% of the carriers weight. But I guess it makes sense for really long and exhausing excursions where also speed and mobility matters.. and they also used to carry a weapon.

    • @maurusloeffel
      @maurusloeffel 3 роки тому +1

      @@GrzegorzBaranArt That depends on how much Popeye you are ;) haha jokes aside. I can't remember how heavy it was. For sure it was not 20kg. The drone and its accessories are developed to be as light as possible. I would guess it was about 12kg. Keep in mind that you lay your backpack on the ground when you're shooting. That helps too to not lose too much energy throughout the shooting day.
      Regarding that 10% of the bodyweight - I'm having difficulties to believe that. As I was in the military service we regularly had packages to carry of about 20-25kgs which is about 25% of the bodyweight. I assume that 10% number is meant for when they're on a mission and need endurance and be able to act agile and swift. Apart from that I'm pretty sure a marine (those guys are beasts!) can easily carry 60-70 kg for a long distance of 50-100 km or even more. But hey, we're not soldiers (anymore) ^^.

    • @GrzegorzBaranArt
      @GrzegorzBaranArt  3 роки тому +1

      @@maurusloeffel yeah, it wasnt about how much average marine can carry around but about suggested load for weeks long missions behind enemy lines when they had to trade ammo and sockets for food etc. as every additional kg/pound mattered. I read it in some documentary book about Navy Seals while ago.. but cant remember the title :D

      @@b.a.g2073 Thanks, I would strongly recommend to get a Metashape. I know its around 170USD but really.. its just 170USD. A standard version offers everything you might need, it doesnt need infinite resources anymore so can be used even on average PC. Agisoft dont ask for any upgrade fees... I use it since 4 or 5 years already and .. I payed just 100 at the beginning and I still got the most recent version. ANd the best thing is that if anyone happens to them.. if the company is acquired.. or introduces new purchase model.. you can keep working version forever. You are not to upgrade. And this is really good and reliable piece of software and .. super cheap in loing term. Just saing.. planning to test a Meshroom as soon I finish testing 3DZephyr :).

    Great video as usual. I find the backpack to be critically important, both for comfort, usability and ease of access to equipment. It's also important for me for it to always be packed and ready, if I have to pack before a trip I'll always forget something and just get frustrate. So I've got three, one for general urban photography (Ona Camps Bay), one for general landscape (Lowepro 450 Protactic) and a bigger Lowepro one for serious technical photography (photogrammetry, hdri etc). The Ona doesn't look like a photo backpack at all which is great for urban, for the others I'm off by myself mostly and don't care how it looks. And for you I think the Manfrotto was the one that looked the most obviously tourist or photonerd.

    • @GrzegorzBaranArt
      @GrzegorzBaranArt  3 роки тому

      Thanks Dan, and big thanks for sharing your experience :). I like the Lowerpro 450 look, feels very solid and reliable.. and seems to blend very well .. regarding the look, its important for me from the safety reason as you might or might not attract unwanted attention. When you scan you usually do it anyway, but when you don't and you just move around in rough areas its always safer to blend with the background ;)

      @@GrzegorzBaranArt Yeah you're right, carrying a lot of expensive equipment around it's best to 'look quiet'. I also carry 'Mace' (pepper spray) and a shortwave radio as often there's no cell phone coverage.
      By the way, for anybody who already has a tripod or two, Manfrotto has a horizontal arm attachment for $130 or so, but you can also get the same exact unit from AliExpress (www.aliexpress.com/item/32859662946.html?spm=a2g0o.store_home.productList_8498397.pic_2) for only $22. It's really quick to connect and sturdy, but a touch on the heavier side compared to a carbon fiber if you're looking for the lowest carrying weight

    • @GrzegorzBaranArt
      @GrzegorzBaranArt  3 роки тому +1

      @@DanMcLaughlin Unfortunately paper sprays same as anything that can be used as a weapon .. I mean.. even a pen ;P are illegal in the UK. Great share regarding the arm, didnt know this type of arm even exists. Seems super useful if I ever change the tripod to the one without an arm :) and realised that migght be super useful for those who think about use of the monopod with the heavy ring flash like goddox one etc. Cheers!

      @@GrzegorzBaranArt Interesting idea, I just tried it with my Robus RCM-438 monopod (another great, cheap carbon fiber monopod highly rates by people who are very picky about these kinds of things). Anyhow I wouldn't have expected but it works surprisingly well, the arm is long enough you can keep your hand on the back to counter balance the camera on the other side. I may well just use it this way instead of the full tripod it's so easy.

    Another very helpful video, Grzegorz! I've never used a photography backpack before, but I know there are so many out there, I wouldn't know where I start. Now I at least know to check out the FirstLight brand!
    By the way, how do you get the video of you walking around? Do you have someone fly your drone as you walk?

    • @GrzegorzBaranArt
      @GrzegorzBaranArt  3 роки тому

      Thanks James, means a lot :). Regarding the drone, mavic 2 pro is a very complex toy. It has loads of sensors from each side and powerful computer on board. It has full awarness of the environment and its position on the map.
      To record myself walking I simply use one of available 'inteligent' modes which is called an 'active track'. So I simply take off, aim myself, drag a square around myself on the screen and its done. The drone detects me as subject to follow and follows me wherever I go. Due to sensors it auto avoids any obstacles like trees, rocks, walls, terrain irregularity etc.
      You can see how it works on 5:00 of this video:
      ua-cam.com/video/k4btbj6IGhw/v-deo.html
      So if there is a branch.. it will automatically increase the height or decrease it to avoid collision. If its too hard the drone will stop.
      This mode changes the functionality of the controller and when I push the stick from left to the right it tells the drone to circle around the subject trying to maintain the same distance. Pushing another one forward and backward changes the distance to the subject.
      There are more 'inteligent modes' so you can ask the drone move parallel to the subject when it moves, or autocircle around it etc. :D
      I guess you are planning to get one :).. it definitelly changes a lot and gives totally new perspective and options for framing. I can see how much your videos can benefit from having one. Its a shame tho that there are more and more limits every day to where you can fly the drone but its a skill worth to invest to imo. And regarding the scanning.. its a perfect tool to scan large objects like cliffs, huge rock formations or buildings.. as its simply a flying camera without any limits :D.
      Btw. I would be careful with collision auto-detection in dense forest because one mistake can take the drone down. Detection system works with trees for sure because it already saved my drone a few times when I didnt notice the obstacle while the drone did. Also I saw some folks just running in a forrest with the drone following them.. but I would get a heart attack doing that :D.. I hit branches way to many times with my previous Tello toy when I used it to learn how to fly :).
      So regarding my photogrammetry trips, I walk usually totally alone and film myself using Dji OsmoPocket mounted on a small tripod or a monopod (with small legs) or with the drone using its intelligent modes. Hope that helps :)

      @@GrzegorzBaranArt Wow, that sounds amazing! I had no idea the consumer drones available could do such advanced things already. And thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed reply! I hope maybe sometime next year I'll be able to get a drone to try out. There are plenty of times I see something just out of reach that I think, "if I had a drone, it would be possible to scan that".

    • @GrzegorzBaranArt
      @GrzegorzBaranArt  3 роки тому +1

      :D thanks. I didnt mean the app used for the photogrammetry reconstruction but an actual 'capture' of the surrounding environment. I meant that usually I need to carry a lot of gear to capture a reality as I never know what I might need, especially during longer trips when you cannot predict everything (lighting, wind, subject placement etc.). Hope that makes more sense now :)

      I like the idea with expandable roll-top. Also the pocket on the back side for documents and money sounds like a great idea but wandering are they really as secured because u rub them all the time when carrying the backpack with your back. Also not sure about the monopod and tripod mounts. They dont feel as reliable and confy to those from the FIrstLight. I really dont like the bottom stripe based mount system because it when the tripod or monopod is longer it hits everything around :) in narrow spaces. I had exactly this issue with the Manfrotto. Anyway definitelly looks like really well thought design :). I like the weather resistance.. its something Manfrotto I presented totally lacks. Would be cool to have it tested one day. Also wandering how reliable it is in long term. Did you try to mount a drone inside? Would it wobble? Feels like something between the Manfrotto and the Firstlight I presented. Big thanks for sharing, definitelly an interesting and worth to consider pick :D. Cheers!

      @@GrzegorzBaranArt Two years that I have this bag, I work on photogrammetry at university and I'm archaeologist so I take this bag in very difficult surveys too. I put inside my D810 + 4 lenses + battery + ringlight + laptop (15" alienware R15 V3) + ipad + anafi drone case with 5 battery + usb dock + all my papers, my tripod (3 legged thing carbon) + other stuff in the upper pocket and use front belt and bottom belt too to hang other stuff. Resistance ? yes it is dragged everywhere without concern. Rain resistance ? I live in Belgium ... rain coutry :p . Usage ? everyday, and I take everyday the train to go to work or i'm on an archaeological survey in other coutries. For the problem with tripod, belt options under the bag or use the belt on the side with two legs inside, I have also put hooks on the straps. When I travel I have also my second bag with me : Billingham 225 with side pouch. All my papers are in the back pocket and it's really safe.

      Thaks a lot Carlos, Regarding the material.. it looks really nice. YOu definitelly picked a hard surface to scan and reconstruct. I guess there is a different level of reconstruction quality.. some areas are very well covered while some lacks of data. In result some areas are sharp while some are blured. Usually you shoudl capture more images from areas with complex height.. like grass, larget rocks, concaves etc. so the reconstruction software has enough data to deal with. Anyway, definitelly keep going, you are doing great :). I would pick less complex but still interesting surface to start with as the subject you picked is a really tough one :). Good luck :)
