I use paste wax to keep my little anvil from rusting. 😁

Hi Roy. When I know I'm gonna be off the anvil or whatever tools for a while, 2-4 days or more, I just either rub on some boiled linseed oil or easier trick is to spray some spatter shield which isn't too pricey. Just my .02 cents. God Bless~

I like to use Fluid Film it is a lanolin based corrosion inhibitor. Used Fluid Film on helicopters while on active duty.

Rust is nature's iron protectant. I have a dolly which sits outside and has developed a rust patina anywhere the original paint chipped off. I have had that dolly for years. I too have a Peddinghaus anvil which I keep in the garage and which I lightly coat with butcher block wax. It is not as big as Olga weighing only 125 kilos. It has a few rust spots but they are thin. The wax covers them nicely.

great choice - either keep working or apply a light coating of oil. most any will work as long as it is not a water dispersed oil.

Minwax furniture paste wax . Wirewheeled it clean 220 on my orbital sander to get rid of the welding splatter . Let my heater warm it up then waxed it works great on cast iron table saw top too

I just get a little bit of motor oil and oil it down with a rag, removes the rust there and helps prevent it later

    Hello Roy,
I happen to have what is essentially a copy of Olga, which is currently out in the backyard, the whole surface brown from the time out there while I build my bellows.
Despite knowing these rust-removal tips from my time as an apprentice, I greatly appreciate you share this with everyone who did not yet know this.
    You have my thanks!

I love the rants and the fact you spill the truth not caring what people think or say.
I like to do the same with the silicone spray. That or wipe it down with linseed oil. Usually only do it when I’m going to be away from it for a week or longer.

I know this video is a year old, no idea why UA-cam popped it up for me. Anyways this is the way I do it too. My forge area is covered but only walled on the side with my shop, so rain and snow will blow in. My advise is don't remove the rust, polish it with oil and steel wool. It's called browning and was used before blueing to prevent further rusting.

One that I haven't seen mentioned is renaissance wax; would that perhaps do the job? Having said that, Roy's system sounds perfectly effective. The rag soaked in oil sounds like a winner too; just drape it over the anvil when you're done for the day.

Hey Roy. I've been using just Lanox. An American product made from sheep oil from their wool. Lanolin. I use it on my lathe and mill drill and now in the anvil. And it's good on ya hands. Lubricates and repeals water. Too easy.

When I was working overseas I was gone for 4-6 weeks at a time. I'd simply wipe the face of the anvil off and put a thin layer of grease on it. No rust. Now I just wipe down with an oily rag between uses. I'm a blade smith so it's one day in the forge and a week or two in the shop.

if you are going to leave your anvil alone for extended time seal with bees wax and then take a piece of canvas that has been oiled and lay it over the anvil
works great for me in the winter time.

Get a piece of cotton cloth ( old bed sheet) and saturate it In linseed oil and let it dry flat. Drape it over the anvil with a weight on it. It’s not perfect but works ok.

When I first got my Hay Budden, it was too rough from years of rust, so I had to resurface it to avoid unwanted texture. I took it down just to an acceptable level of minor pits and then polished it to a mirror finish. I haven't had to do anything else in over a year.

I do this with more anvils get an old bath towel I put over the anvil if you spray WD40 on it on a regular basis it should stop the rust. Eventually the towel will become fairly soaked with WD40 and it should stay fairly moist. If you do get rust. Just go over it with a flat sanding wheel on your grind up or a wire brush on your grinder. Easy peasy Japanesey.

rolling stone stone gathers no moss. sounds like the best way to prevent rust is to USE your anvil. a light coating of oil doesnt hurt either.

As previously stated, it'll wear off with use.
However if you'd rather not wait and wanna get it cleaned off and pretty again, another way you could remove the rust, I haven't seen mentioned,
wet sand it with a very fine grade scotch brite pad or very fine grit Emory cloth, promptly blow off with the air compressor or wipe down with rubbing alcohol to help remove moisture, then lightly coat with your preferred metal protector

Love it. It's a real issue, with a real answer. Thanks Roy Adams. Information is gold. As some know I have no shop and all my equipment is outside. So oil is my go to. Boiled linseed oil on the non work surface area of things and light oil on work surface area.
But the rust converter is a fantastic idea. Maybe I should switch to that. Something to ponder upon.

well the way we keep rust off our tools that have two enemies rust and politicians, is a good light coating of oil, or use a paint on tools if you must to keep the rust away, or keep it covered up to keep the dirt and moisture on it though for roy with a slightly open air shop like that its not possible, but surfice rust will happen even if its just a bit cold in a shop or a good coat of wax though this was already sugested after a light sanding to get some of the rust off if you must because its become thicker
