  • In this episode we take the Rogue Safari Popup Flash Booster to the zoo and demonstrate it against regular popup flash.
Rogue Safari by ExpoImaging is a unique tool that concentrates the light from your popup flash to give you more range and power.
It is best used for distance photography since it is optimized for telephoto zoom lenses over 100mm focal lengths.
We also found that by working in either shutter priority or manual modes you gain enough light to work at the fastest available shutter speed with regular flash, great for moving subjects in low light.
Also, with the amount of power Safari offers you can prevent silhouetting caused by strong back lighting-- for example shooting a subject against the sun.

Hello Michael, the Safari is designed to fit in the hot-shoe of a Canon or Nikon DSLR with a popup flash, using a minimum focal length of 100mm. To see if it works with your particular camera a compatibility chart can be found here: www.rogueflash.com/pages/rogue-safari-camera-compatibility . To answer your question about improving your flash, it will certainly improve the distance your flash will travel. Will it be suitable for every situation? Probably not; shooting closer subjects in standard lighting conditions might end up over exposed unless flash compensation is dialed in. Where the Safari excels is shooting in low lighting conditions where the subject is far away, or if your exposure is competing with back-lighting from the sun.

what kind of photography would you recommend using this for?

Wildlife, sports... any type of photography using a telephoto lens and the subject is far away. It also is helpful for very low lighting conditions, but keep in mind the minimum focal length is 100mm.

So it boosts the flash range but necessarily doesn't intensify it....hmm...i wonder if this would be a good accessory for Macro.

+Caleb Rees Hi Caleb, the Rogue Safari's intended use is for distance, in the range of 10-60 feet. The specially designed fresnel lens focuses the wider burst from the pop-up flash into a narrow beam, therefore intensifying the center yet maintaining an even fill on a crop sensor camera. Ideal focal lengths with the Safari are telephoto-- 100mm or greater; when using lenses less than 100mm a vignetted effect would result. We would not recommend it for macro as it may greatly overexpose the image, but most likely the lens itself will block the flash when using the camera up close.

Hello, we would recommend against using the Safari for macro applications if the macro lens has a long barrel. The minimum focal length using the Safari is 100mm, any wider and a vignette will be noticeable. If the subject is very close to the lens the lens itself will cause a shadow just in front of the lens element. What it is good for, are subjects further away using a telephoto lens.
