Everyone remembers "Death can have me when it earns me", and rightfully so... But who here remembers this gem: "KRATOS! YOU'RE ON FIRE!!!" "It will pass."
elden ring music was god tier imo, but i understand why people would overlook it because its hard to pay attention to the music when ur trying ur best to roll out of waterfowl dance
I think the issue with Elden Ring in that regard is how the music and score is only there when you are fighting a boss. The OSTs are absolutely fantastic, I have listened to the Godskin Theme a billion times, but they are essentially narrowed down to just being "boss music". The scores in Ragnarok however range from subtle to grand and accompany you throughout the entire game. From the very first moment to the last you have audio that perfectly fits to the scene. Combine that with the beautiful environmetal sounds of the game and I believe that GoW's sound design is way superior.
@@davidjr3658 I’m glad sonic community tried, but imo the sonic game hella mid. No offense to those who like it. Genshit Midpact should be disqualified for that doing those reward tbh.

well it logical: GOW game direction is phenomenal, it's like you watching a movie, in the elden ring you kinda creating your own Score/music between these two is depends on ur own preferences, i voted for ER simply because main theme music used to be final boss music is OP decision Best actor, well no explanation needed Best action: GOW wins because you know it was best action game fr Best RP: ER wins because you know it was best role play game fr

Thanks for mentioning the Sonic Frontiers OST being missing. Actually such a shame, it's definitely one of the best Sonic Soundtracks ever and thats saying something considering the series.
What I find so interesting is that for a lot of people. Elden Ring was their game of the year, yet in every other category GoW Ragnarok took the cake. To me, that tells me this. Making the best possible game isn't about Game Direction, Narrative, Art Direction, Music, or Audio Design. It's about creating the most memorable experience possible. These things matter, of course, but they're not everything. We don't want an elevator, we want stairs.
Elden Rings replay value is also at a level that hasn't been touched since the Skyrim and the mid-2000s Bethesda days. Like skyrim, it'll probably grow new fans and be played for DECADES after launch. Very very few games have that kind of power.
It's funny, I consider Ragnarok to be my favourite game of all time now that I've completed it, but i still want elden ring to with GOTY, i just don't have a reasoning for it, i just 'feel' like elden ring deserves it
I'm with Charlie on one thing: GOW Ragnarok did not ruined Kratos's character... On the contrary, they perfected it in an emotional level... Especially when he narrates the events from previous games.
The story and what they did with kratos was perfect… but i wouldant mind to think about how fast the game(s) in norse mythology would have been with gow3 kratos steam rolling all 9 realms
@@YXIGXOA bruh, its option. imagine you are paralysed or smth, just tell someone to pick the personality traits of the chars to best suit your experience and you got the game played the way you wanna see it.

nah, without question for sure its edgerunners. don't get me wrong, i like arcane. but some of the character feels off to me. like jayce out of nowhere having sex. by the way, i never play league but i do watch highlights for champs. and when jayce since i dont know his ability and all showed up in show i expect something. but not sex for sure.
Edgerunners vs arcane is a tough call. Edgerunners made me want to play cyberpunk again, but arcane hooked me in without making me feel the need to play league at all
I watched both, and they both are amazing. Arcane takes the cake though because it got me addicted not only when watching it, but a year later still waiting for season 2. Edgerunners got me addicted, but faded after a while
@@nchicken_4815 Probably because the story ended. but I think the Edgerunners story was miles ahead of Arcane. But Arcane had a higher budget and work put into it.
agreed on Kratos' character, its very easy to illicit an emotional response by killing off characters or destroying things the audience likes, but to have the entire experience so wrought with emotion without having to rely on shock value and while instilling meaningful messages in the player, is something to behold.
Exactly what I have been saying. People think its brave or hard to do "kill the character with the questionable past violently". I believe its way too easy. Instead they went the "redemption by doing something equally as good" part, which is harder and takes lot of set pieces to fall accurately in the character development. That is brave.
Kratos was a deep character from the very start. Ever since the remake people pretend like the original kratos was this mindless murder machine and his games were nothing but gore and violence, when in fact they told a deep and rich story about regret and self-loathing. People disregarding that to praise the newer games is disgusting.
7:41 I was wondering why For Honor wasn't available for this category, but then Charlie said "Updates the community actually wants" and then it made sense.
I like that whenever one of the options was Ragnarok, it was usually in the middle where your eyes would be drawn to it, almost like they knew what everyone would pick for most of em.
I dont think kratos is as 1 dimensional in the old games as people remember. most just remember the hack slash, kill shit side. and they forget the reasons behind why he did it. he killed his family in a blood rage, and then ended up wanting revenge. but he was also having nightmares from killing the and felt rightfully awful about what he did, and athena was like ''do this and you will be absolved'' etc. theres a lot more to Kratos in the first three games than people remember i think. but i also agree they bought it out more in the newer ones.
Character motivation is not what entirely makes up a character, take the motivation away and how do you describe Kratos himself in the games? Then describe new Kratos, then Compare them, you’ll see a huge difference, I truly believe old Kratos was just a one dimensional angry guy who killed for nothing but revenge
Yeah, he was never one dimensional he was always fighting for his family and when hearing Kratos say he loves his brother in Ragnarok really cemented that. There were times when he fell and did some bad things but that was to show how much of his humanity had been taken from him from anger. He killed all the gods but the pain of losing his family still remained. The new Kratos shows the same intense love for his new family
@@PurpleG07 But it wasn't just about revenge for Kratos. He had endless nights where he would think about the moment he murdered his wife and daughter, again, and again and sought any means of getting rid of his torment. If it was just about revenge, he would have be happy at stopping with murdering Ares for what he did, but when he finds out that even after killing a god, he will not be rid of his nightmares, he decides to take his own life because his pain is far too great to bear. Not to mention the self hatred he has permeates every aspect of his life as god of war from then on. He hated himself more than he could ever hate Zeus or the other gods. That is why after his siege of the pantheon, he attempted to kill himself again as a means of a final, proper atonement for the injustices he carried out against the people of Greece, and especially for what he did to his family. To say he is one dimensional is such a blatant disregard of the effort the people at Santa Monica put into this franchise.
Imo scorn had a very unique way of getting around enemies, literally most if not all of the time you could just avoid the enemies by not attacking them, just be patient and they'll go somewhere else and despawn by going through a tunnel of flesh of sorts
Best community support is almost 500% gonna be No Mans Sky. Those devs are probably the most transparent with their community and it shows with how many good updates and promises they are still developing
I think kratos was done phenomenal. He's an old man reflecting on his past, weary from countless years of battle, trying to live the life he's wanted. He's had to slowly learn to open himself up to love and caring about others, but it was done without turning him into a wimp. He is strong, he is stoic, but he is willing to open himself up. When he tells the story to atreus in late game, I literally started to cry. Hearing him tell the story and realizing that the story was his life and how exhausted he was. I think he was done absolutely amazing.
I feel like its rare to have an actually good role model whose masculine but also not toxic and actively working on themselves where men can look up to so I really appreciate that direction rather than the lift big rock kill big badguy like in the older games
He's amazing but his character arc isn't finished unless he comeback to Greece and fix what he already destroyed imo, because no matter how wiser he had become in norse realm in the end he is still running away from his responsibility in Greece.
@@CurseOxuin there isn't enough of Greece to fix. it's entirely flooded, filled with Souls, constantly covered in cataclysmic storms and tornados the size of mountains, and nothing can grow there. if any people survived the initial destruction they've long since died.
Best audio in Elden ring for me is when I dodge Godfrey's colossal axe and it hits the ground. It's just so satisfying for me when he isn't whooping my ass
I think one of the most clever things they did to show that Kratos isn't dumb is the riddle topic in GoWR. He gets riddles, he just finds no enjoyment in them. It was a great little piece.
Wtf are you saying🤣like how mimir makes fun of him by being dumb half the game while in greece he was solving impossible puzzles and being the greatest spartan general
Kratos is very clever. In 2018 he immediately improvised a plan to get to a chisel tip that was under an unbelievable amount of ice that even Mimir didn’t see a way through. He’s a quick thinker and a great strategist given that he was a Spartan general.

The problem with no man's sky for me, especially now, is that bethesda's version of it is already scheduled for release, and since it's gonna be basically the same thing, just hopefully finished by the deadline... No Man's Sky had it's time, and they missed the mark, not sayin' it wasn't an amazing game way ahead of it's time, but it shouldn't even be in the runnings, regardless of how supportive it's community is.

He did smile one single time in one of the prequel games. (If not GOW3, I can't quite remember) He was experiencing an illusion of having his wife and daughter back and he was tucking her into bed. He knew it was an illusion the whole time but didn't care.
@@daani1733 So Doom Slayer and Azura are dumb cavemen too ? That logic literally makes no sense. And no dumb caveman could solve those puzzles from gow 1-3 (Which obv the players solves but tehnically its Kratos)
Would you recommend the game? I don't know much about it but I love immersive single player games and haven't played one in some time. But the theme and design in the game looks really good so I'm interested!
The entire game sounded to static/robotic/inhuman to me. Like the Last of Us and God of War both sound like people actually speaking to each other while A Plague Tale voice acting sounds like kids struggling to read what's on a script. Amicia wasn't terrible like Hugo and the annoying alchemist who over explained literally every gameplay tool given, but no one in the game really sounded particularly well (possibly playing in French would have made it better? But I'm guessing it's similar to Metro where it doesn't sound good no matter what language you play in lol).
Did Charlie not Play GoW ascension? Ragnorok was not the first game to have Kratos have a real smile. In the scene where Kratos sees his daughter, while an illusion, he does indeed smile.
1:35 YES, THANK YOU. Jesus the brainrot of some people. His character is straight up the best part of the game. Guy has like 10 years of therapy worth of knowlege and emotional maturity and people complain hes not some empty shell for a game about killing gods
He wasn't an empty shell in the previous games tho, his character always had depth. The new god of war is just following the trend of stoic, emotionally distant but deep down a good guy, dad archetype that was popularised by the last of us.
@@AnimatorDemon That's such a cap. As someone who has played all the games and loved them, Kratos in the older games, especially the sequels, was just a giant ball of rage. Yes there are a FEW scenes where he isn't a maniac, but it's just him just barely holding in his rage. He was pretty one-dimensional.
@@AnimatorDemon Yeah, also he was a toxic masculine man, don't be like that, Revenge Bad, same shit as Tlou2 story, but what do you expect from Soyny. The will always put men down. This game got so much praise and the story was so fucking cringe in some parts, and forgettable.
@@AnimatorDemon It wouldn't make sense though. I like old kratos but having him be more emotionally stable makes sense as he ages. It's also a nice change of pace for the series and lets kratos do more self reflection.
@@gracecalis5421 Now thats cap. Kratos may have acted as a one dimensional charecter but he never was. I doubt you actually cared for the stories.
God of War: Ragnarok has accessibility features outside of NPCs telling you what to do within one minute of observing that a puzzle exists. For example, "High Contrast Mode" assists people with photosensitivity and low-vision, it has great subtitling, and an assist mode for seeing navigation points easier, like the fixtures you need to fling yourself with by using the blades of chaos. Accessibility isn't just for people who don't solve a puzzle in three minutes.
Elden ring had a bigger impact on gaming and me personally then GoW will ever have. The first time entering the map and discovering just how big the game is without a walk through was the most memorable experience in my life. Discovering and learning a bosses movesets or trying out interesting and unique weapons was just amazing. You can have your opinions but nitpicking everything about a game to prove your point just infuriates.

The amazing thing about Horizon's release timing is that this is the second time that they have managed to do that in a two game series. Horizon: Zero Dawn -> Breath of the Wild: 3 Days Horizon: Forbidden West -> Elden Ring: 7 Days
Personally when it came to like best game for newcomers I went to the Quarry because you don't need to really understand game mechanics other than react to things and look at your options and you play the game there is no technically bad choice since it's a choice base game I feel like those who vote last of us are already Last of Us fans who get another person who hasn't played last of us to play that game and God of War is literally a sequel so I don't know why it's in that category cuz I watch berleezy and he proves what I think about Ragnarok and that is simply you will get lost on references if you did not play the game completely
I played Forbidden West, and I plan to play Elden Ring soon, but man, I feel bad for the developers of Horizon who released their game at the wrong times… twice..
When Charlie's talking about game direction, I suspect he's thinking more about cinematic direction. To me, that more falls under 'Best Narrative'. The way I see it, game directions is more, 'how do the mechanics, encounter, and level design execute the directors vision for a game'. Graphics, music, and cinematic story telling are also part of a games direction, in the same way a sound track is a huge part of a movie. But even if cinematics make up half a game, evaluating game direction on just that, misses the other half of the game. It's kind of like confusion the screenwriter for the director.
I think I agree, "Game Direction" seems like it should be the _overall_ *direction* of the game. Cinematic direction would certainly be a big part of that, but hardly the only factor.
Xenoblade 3 getting nominated is huge for a JRPG. Now we can also hear it in the Orchustra which is all I wanted, it won’t win but the music will slap.
This new bot is already annoying af. Reporting them doesn't even work nor does it permanently remove them from your feed. Is there a block feature I am missing here or do I just have to stick with all this?
I'd love for them to pull the choir out and blow everyone's faces out of their asses with the moebius battle theme, but I'm sure they'll probably choose the generic battle theme instead (which is A-ok, the soundtrack is fantastic). Just need sena's VA there to randomly shout "YIPPIE"
Can we take a second to appreciate that RL was able to get Charlie to overcome his fear of flying, across the ocean no less, for the first time in 5 years
Huh? Pretty sure that flight made it worse dude. There was crazy air turbulence and that kinda freaked him out. Also a reason he wasn't feeling like meeting anyone there.
TUNIC should have been nominated for best soundtrack. It was like classic golden era nintendo platformer music, but every track was the banging water level tune.
Elden Ring's art direction is on another level. I can't even think of another game that kept having such breathtaking imagery throughout its entire runtime
While I know it won’t win I’m more than happy seeing Xenoblade 3 being put up at all for game of the year, and hope that it will come out on top for best soundtrack.
It's really just cool to see Xenoblade get nominated for things, especially since it'll get to go in the medley. Shame so many people disregard it on sight because of Dunkey and "anime bad"
Eh I played xenoblade 3 and beat all of the superbosses and I didn't really think the game was good. The gameplay was pretty shallow where you just spam cancel fusion arts and mobius swap cancel arts into chain attack to win. The consul villains had weak character development with the exception of N. I didnt like how the main cast all had the same backstory and setting as child soldiers and losing friend to a tragedy. It felt like the main cast were all the same person with different voices. The story felt like a generic anime story especially the long cutscene at chapter 5. The exploration becames very exhausting during the giant sea area and felt like a giant time waster. Overall, I think the game falls short to the 1st xenoblade and the xenosaga games.
yeah. unfortunately thats just how its gonna be. because dunkeys awful community is what it is, and will spread whatever about anyone who gives him pushback, while also attacking random people for games dunkey gives bad reviews to. and charlie being a part of his community just spreads that info they spread because he likes the guy. so that aint gonna help its chances.

@@JustWin4Head I agree that it's hard to top Xenoblade 1, but Xenoblade 3 was still an absolutely fantastic game, at least in the strict gameplay department. I think it has the most intuitive, streamlined and satisfying combat in the series, as a matter of fact. Xenoblade 1's combat fell short due to distinct lack of customization and variety; there were only a handful of arts you could choose from to swap in and out, this being painfully evident with Shulk. To me it felt pretty monotonous around getting to Eirytha Sea and I found myself resisting the urge to turn casual mode on just to get through the combat slog a little quicker. Xenoblade 2 had the right idea in the customization department, but introduced a plethora of new mechanics and things to keep track of that just ended up becoming tedious, like - satisfying though it was to actually do - breaking orbs in chain attacks, and maintaining blade affinity. Xenoblade 3 had both customization in the form of the amazing class system as well as the secondary arts, not to mention the fact that you can switch to literally any party member during combat to reposition or do things that YOU want them to do. It's an incredible example of player agency. On top of the combat though, the hero quests were super fun and interesting, they brought back the gems from Xenoblade 1 and improved it exponentially, and they kept the compact accessory system from Xenoblade 2 while also sacking the pouch items that was annoying to keep maintained at times. So, from a video game standpoint, I definitely think Xenoblade 3 is the best. That being said... the story is a bit of a different story. While I don't think it was bad by any means, both Xenoblade 1 and 2 has better and more satisfying stories. It was still definitely good though and here's a prompt to think about if you were let down by Z and Moebius as a whole: Moebius is a part of everyone. Including the player. It's a little cliche to think about, but say, during the ending, you felt any degree of sadness or regret that the party was being split up and Aionios was about to be erased, that would mean that you yourself were starting to become Moebius; not wanting for all of that to have been erased - for all the time you and the characters spent together to effectively be undone. I think there was some very interesting philosophy at play there and it's unfortunate that you really have to think about it to really appreciate it, since most people probably didn't even understand what Moebius was to begin with due to the vagueness of the game's articulation at many points. And yeah, I do also agree that I didn't get as attached to the characters this time around, but I still thought they were all fantastic, and the reason they are similar in nature is because... well, pretty much everyone on Aionios is. Everybody has been a victim of subjugation and oppression by Moebius for literally a century, being controlled and played with for literal entertainment. Everyone has seen shit and gone through shit, and the nature of the world means that everyone has probably lost people they cared about too. I don't think it's a lack of creativity necessarily, I think you just have to look at it as if that makes the most sense and is to be expected. Which to you might be a let down, but if you set your expectations, you won't be AS let down. But anyway, another reason is that *because* they all have these things in common, they are pushing towards a common goal, which is to set the world to rights and give everyone the freedom to choose what they actually want to do with their life - their REAL life. A rather common narrative in many stories about oppression, yet still a powerful one, which both Xenoblade 1 and 2 happen to sport as well, though maybe Xenoblade 2 to a lesser extent. Still, I do think Xenoblade 3 was one of the better games of this year, but I certainly don't think it beats Elden Ring by any stretch of the imagination. Now, this is a long as shit post. Why did I write it? I don't know. Will anyone at all even read it? Probably fucking not. I'm just incredibly bored and wanted to actually voice my thoughts on the game after having been sitting on it for a few months now and having an actual discussion with varying thoughts is nice sometimes. As such, your own thoughts are still very valid, and I certainly do understand why you might not like it as much, but I believe there are definitely strengths to be had in Xenoblade 3.
A Plague Tale Requiem is being really overlooked due to being released so close to Ragnarok (similar to Forbidden West and Elden Ring). I’ve completed 100% all 4 of them and a lot of awards going to Ragnarok I feel Requiem should seriously be in contention for…. Especially best Sound Design/OST. Like you said it’s hard to go against Christopher Judge (esp as a Stargate fan)…but Amicia from Requiem hands down is the next best for me. I almost wish it came out a different year because I feel like it really deserved many of these awards. If it was marketed a lot more so as many people played it as Ragnarok I think there would be a ton of serious debate in regards to its contention for the awards.
And there's also the fact that GOW 2018 also had the same thing happened to it with every category being in R2D2 but the Goty
Well said

agreed on Kratos' character, its very easy to illicit an emotional response by killing off characters or destroying things the audience likes, but to have the entire experience so wrought with emotion without having to rely on shock value and while instilling meaningful messages in the player, is something to behold.
Yeah, while I find his 2016 characterization more intriguing to watch, Ragnarok's Kratos is 100% a natural evolution and still really good.
Exactly what I have been saying. People think its brave or hard to do "kill the character with the questionable past violently". I believe its way too easy. Instead they went the "redemption by doing something equally as good" part, which is harder and takes lot of set pieces to fall accurately in the character development. That is brave.
Yeah to be honest most people who argue that they ruined his character don’t really have a very good point to make lol.
Kratos was a deep character from the very start.
Ever since the remake people pretend like the original kratos was this mindless murder machine and his games were nothing but gore and violence, when in fact they told a deep and rich story about regret and self-loathing.

The new Kratos shows the same intense love for his new family
my farts are better than Charlie's farts.
Yeah... In the first games he was already a deep character but now he is a multidimensional gigachad monster

I yelled at my scream “A WHAT?!” But had to chuckle because the game got me lol

I played Forbidden West, and I plan to play Elden Ring soon, but man, I feel bad for the developers of Horizon who released their game at the wrong times… twice..
If they released it late-may early june they would've had a SIZEABLE chunk of time between two games. Such a disappointment for them I imagine.
When Elden ring release date was postponed to closer to HFW. The Dev's should've saw the writing on the wall and ran.
In what world would fucking horizon deserve goty . Not even close to elden ring and gow . Just because it looks great?
@@jasonburrell4903 nobody claimed that though

I genuinely find it baffling by how Sonic Frontiers wasn’t in “best score and music”… It at least should’ve been nominated. That shit slaps hard.
They ought to put Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in last minute for best score and music
Because they hate Japanese games getting recognition. Xenoblade being there was a one in a million even though it deserves to win
@silentlore Xenoblade deserve to win over god of war and Elden ring ??

Charlie didn't explain much for his game direction choice. But while he was choosing, he was giving his opinion on Kratos' character development.
"Game direction" such a vague and meaningless metric. Every design choice about a game contributes to the direction of that game.
*I'M BETTER THAN CHARLIE, MY CONTENT IS BETTER!*
So happy to see Xenoblade 3 at least getting a nomination. Hopefully it convinces more people to play the game.

Honestly Tunic is so slept on, I'd recommend anyone to try it. Maybe someone should get Charlie to play it
Xenoblade 3 getting nominated is huge for a JRPG. Now we can also hear it in the Orchustra which is all I wanted, it won’t win but the music will slap.
Yea i cannot wait for the weight of life to play with all the other nominees

Is there a block feature I am missing here or do I just have to stick with all this?
I'd love for them to pull the choir out and blow everyone's faces out of their asses with the moebius battle theme, but I'm sure they'll probably choose the generic battle theme instead (which is A-ok, the soundtrack is fantastic). Just need sena's VA there to randomly shout "YIPPIE"

Can we take a second to appreciate that RL was able to get Charlie to overcome his fear of flying, across the ocean no less, for the first time in 5 years

YES LET'S APPRECIATE THE EFOORT
TUNIC should have been nominated for best soundtrack. It was like classic golden era nintendo platformer music, but every track was the banging water level tune.
I think ragnorock is the on for me. As Charlie said it was an overall cleaner experience and was far more enjoyable than that of elden ring.
I vote Elden Ring for art direction because of the boss designs and epic drip. Scorn is very good choice too.
Scorn is unique as shit like damn. I'm gonna remember that game forever

Honestly I haven't even heard of that game before now.
It's really just cool to see Xenoblade get nominated for things, especially since it'll get to go in the medley. Shame so many people disregard it on sight because of Dunkey and "anime bad"
Idk I just find anime kind of hard to look at and listen to so yeah anime bad imo

Has anyone else played it through fully and feel similar to me?

My only reason for giving my vote to Edgerunners over Arcane is that it made me play Cyberpunk again, the game and the adaptation are made for each other while Arcane is a phenomenal story on it's own, but League has a totally different feel, it's like it's not even in the same francize.
You should be thankful Arcane didn't make you want to play League 😂

i was so surprised at the best adaptation section. Arcane and edgerunners were my favourite shows and easily a top 5 of all time, man what a hard choice. i agree with arcane tho, that art direction and bts was crazy seeing it being made
I think edgerunners deserved it due to the fact it managed to bring old players back and bring in new people to the game. I preferred arcane as a series but this year I'd give it to cyberpunk
edgerunners hit me way harder than arcane ever could and i've never played either game. there is absolutely no way arcane could come anywhere close to the perfection that studio trigger brought down from the heavens

@@Oneironautic I as a league player (ye bruh ik) find so many new league players who started playing because of Arcane. So the argument works for both games and the show
@@kaikai5963 I think it moreso applies to edgerunners since league is already a popular game where the complaints ive only ever seen (With my limited exposure to league) was the player base and I think the balance.
