I just purchased a D850 and quickly discovered it is not a simple upgrade from my beloved D5200. This video had me saying "wow" out loud as you described some of the features I didn't know about! Thank you so much.
It is Feb, 2022. I just purchased a used D850 today. My first Nikon DSLR. I shoot with medium format Hasselblad, but wanted a Nikon DSLR to invest in some specialty lenses not available in Hasselblad. My thanks to you for a wonderful tutorial on the D850. It is certainly a lot more complex than the Hasselblad menu, and I would have been lucky to even be able to turn on the camera, let alone set it up. I will be referring back to your tutorial for quite a while, I'm sure. Your instructions are clear, and easy to understand. Thank you.
I previously had a Nikon D7200 and decided to take the plunge with the D850 I learnt such a lot watching this video and am most grateful. You don't talk down to people, you speak clearly and concisely. This is without being patronising or having the superior attitude that some professionals have and are reluctant to share any hints or tips. Why, we all have to learn! Thanks so much Tony, I really enjoyed your video. Now to look at which book to buy...
Tony Northrup has the rare gift of transmitting knowledge and valuable experiences, he does so in a clear, concise, knowledgeable and kind manner. I congratulate Tony for his talent and generosity. The world needs people like him. For me its impeccable videos have been very useful what I appreciate.
Be aware, he also makes generalized and incorrect statements eg. "don't bother with pc sync cord connection. You don't need it, It falls out." Some lighting equipment, even somethings like led light panels REQUIRE PC cord connection. AND some pc cords have screw-in fittings another eg. "Program Mode is the default" There is no default setting as such.
I have been looking for days for an answer to a sm problem I have been having with my D850 and you just gave it to me in a little over 10 minutes. THANK YOU
Best overview of how to use that I have found. Tony makes it easy to understand and seems to hit all the key features. A lot of other writers just give a review or a sales pitch. This is the best video I’ve seen from Tony.
Way back in 2014 I bought a D5300 two lens kit with a backpack, and a tripod. This is also when I learned about your UA-cam channel, and bought stunning digital photography for my kindle. In 2017 I bought a D7200, flash guns, a Sigma 85mm art series lens. This hobby is getting expensive, but worth it. I have learned so much over the years from your book and videos. A few months ago I purchased a new D850. Photography is therapy, it has balance. In a left brain right brain kind of way. You two have been immeasurably helpful, turning a thing that could have been incredibly frustrating, into an immense joy. The depth of understanding you provide, for the myriad of technologies we hold in our hands, allows us to better appreciate the full value of these technical marvels. The main point of this post is to convey a heartfelt Thank You (to both of you). You both make the world a better place with your efforts. Helping countless people to be skilled story tellers. Stories that might only be composed in a viewfinder.
Just bought the D850 after a long hiatus away from pro shooting due to taking care of an ill family member. THIS VIDEO REALLY HELPED, A SHIT-TON! Seriously, thank you for having made this, sheesh, a few years away and I feel like my 20+ years of professional shooting went down the toilet. But I’m definitely feeling more confident +comfortable after having watched this video. Again, THANK YOU.
I have had the D850 for almost two years now and still learned some things. Great tutorial! I also liked the time-stamp links you put in your comment section so I could go directly to what I was interested in.
I’m a bit late to the party having just upgraded to the D850 in 2024. Your video has been very helpful in getting setup. Thank you for all the insights and recommendations.
You probably won't see this, but THANK YOU so much for this video. I've tried to find out how to take pictures using live view so I can take pictures from a low view so I don't have to lay down on the ground to do it. Every freakin' video I've watched, the person goes on and on and on about everything but live view photos. You got right to the point and actually covered the subject. Thanks.
Tony, thanks SO much. Listened to every minute. I have had the D850 for a few weeks and have found it to be amazing. One thing that was confounding me (that you may not have noticed yet), was that in live view, my flash wouldn't trigger. I gave up after turning everything on and off and on again--checking batteries etc (you know the drill) .. So, I searched the internet and discovered that neither "on camera" or "remote" flash will work in live view if "silent mode" is turned on (I had turned it on while testing and had forgotten about it). I turned "silent mode" off and the flash worked perfectly. So, if anyone wants to use a flash in live view, make sure "silent mode" is turned off. I guess Nikon figured that if you are in silent mode, you are silent for a reason and wouldn't be using a flash. Tony, you are the first to do a *real* tutorial. My deepest gratitude! Now, if only Lightroom would update to include this camera's NEF files! DNG conversion is so annoying.
I have had my D850 about a year and this is the second time I have watched your tutorial. Great! I felt guilty and ordered one of your ebooks a while back.
You are our HERO. Used this one video to set both back button focus setting, exposure peaking, found out about setting the star ratings and added the histogram in just a few minutes. WOW!! Thank you!!
Sorry missed comment. I love it, especially nice with that focus shift function as getting into macro a bit. Good luckwith your camera and shooting .@@rgman2858
These guys just gave me a free professional quality hour+ long tutorial on my D850, same for my girlfriend for her D500 and I'm going to be trying to buy stuff through their store in return for it from now on because "Thank You" isn't enough. That said, Thank You VERY MUCH for this Tony & Chelsea.
I bought a used D850 and have been wading through the official manual and some ebooks. This video is excellent, clear, succinct and deals with the essentials, and with this camera there are many. The reccos from personal experience are very useful. Thanks Tony!
You forgot to mention an important trick with bracketing photos on Nikon: set the number of bracketed shots you want with desired stops BUT THEN, go into time delay mode, go into the time settings and set it to take only 2 shots. Doing this will automatically take the entire bracket, even if you're bracketing 7 shots. So even though the timer is set to take only 2 shots, if you have bracketing enabled and set to, say, 5 exposures, it will take all 5 exposures automatically. If you have it set to 7, it will take 7, etc. So basically if you're bracketing, just always have the timer mode set to take 2 shots and it will always get your full bracket. Also: I. LOVE. Your videos :) thanks for taking the time to do this for everyone!
As a new D850 owner I cant tell you how much I appreciate this comprehensive tutorial!! It has helped my learning curve immensely! THANK YOU!!!! I am now a subscriber looking forward to more well put together instructional videos.
Headed to the Good News river in Alaska for the third time for a two week float trip. I've carried a D3 and D850 and always felt I didn't get as much out of the 850 as it was capable of giving. Your tutorial fixed that. I see a lot of things I was missing and now feel way better about handling it in some difficult and rugged environments. Thanks so much.
Hey Tony. After several years of using the D7500, I just got my D850. Thank you for taking all that time to explain the functions of the camera in your tutorial. It was a tremendous help. You and Chelsea are great. KEH treated me very well on a trade. Enjoy the holidays. Michael K
My special thanks. Is an excelent video. Well done, well presented. Even now in 2022, the D850 is a superb camera and your tutorial is a special gift for Nikon shutters.
Muchas gracias Tony!!
Got my new D850 ! And thank you guys for ALWAYS giving us a good review of Nikon D850... Got your 4 books of phography and its really help me as amature...Keep up a good works guys ! thank you again !
Awesome information, I just bought a new D-850 to replace my worn out D3s. Great info...a little fast for me to follow at times since I am age 82 on some settings. I will go back, and stop in those areas. Thanks very very much. Tom
This was SOOOOOO helpful. I now know why I keep accidentally 1) lock the focus point and 2) change the image area. Whew! All the rest of the stuff was really good too. Thanks!
Wow, this was a huge amount of useable and pertinant info. Can't thank you enough. Love my D850, and this really helped to clarify some of the menu options. It's a little intimidating getting into that menu and this reduced my fear. Spot on and at a great pace. As most D850 owners have noticed - the camera is heavy. Regarding tripods: my experience was the nice travel ones are not sturdy enough for the D850 w/ the additional weight of a zoom and substantial glass lens. Just a mention of caution. Thank you again for you time putting this video together - and yes, I'm buying every book you got!
Totally the best photography presenter by a mile, I have watched this a few times now and it's great information, definitely getting the book as I have now got a D850. Thank you
Love this video, thank you. One beef I have is back in the day when we shot film we didn't say "ASS-AH" for ASA. ISO stands for International Organization for Standards. It's not a word. It is an acronym and shouldn't be pronounced as such. Old school photographers correct those who say ICE-OH all of the time.
Thanks for your help in 2022! Ive had this camera for a few years and somehow it flipped into P mode and stupidly I forgot about the mode button!! I referred back to this tutorial and it saved the day ! I couldnt find my manual.
You’re fabulous. The D850 is my first attempt in dealing with adjustments and changeable lenses. I used to use a bridge camera! I especially love your UA-cam table of contents with time index. It was so helpful to easily go back and review a specific topic. You are so quick too which is very much appreciated for our busy lives. Thank you Tony. I’m learning lots from your tutorials.
Extremely well done video. Moves fast and is very easy to follow. I have learned more about my camera than any other source I have tried. The best "How to" video I have run across. Thank you.
I love this video. I have watched it a few times because I do at times forget where that feature is hiding. Tony goes through it all which I found to be awesome... now I plan on buying Stunning Digital Photography ebook. All I can say is great job and thank you.
The perfect video. I refer back to this tutorial all the time. Today it was at 16:31. Couldn’t remember how to view the exposure slider in live view. I don’t use my D850 that often these days. Went mirrorless a couple of years ago. Thanks!
Just got my nikon d850 with a 70-200mnm lens and coming from a beginner DSLR (d3400) camera, it is very different...thank you for this video, I will be referring back to it!
Wow I thought I knew my D850’s. You sir... Tony showed me a thing or 2. I know know people on the inside of Nikon , and you you have more to offer on you show. Thank you tony
Thank you Tony, just got my 850 yesterday and your tutorial is great at getting me and others off the ground in hours instead of weeks...I am buying your books to learn even more...Thanks again!
Excellent tutorial, from a top class channel! I got my D850D a couple of weeks ago. Great camera, breath taking images with the right lenses. I do mostly 8K timelapses and I am extremely happy with it. Only big, big downside compare to the mirrorless: unable to view anything in live view while shooting. This is one reason that would almost make me go for the Sony (of course, this apply because timelapses is what I do most, the majority of people with different workflows would not care). And if I shoot in silent mode, no way to see anything of what is happening during the whole process, sort of hit and pray
Thanks for a great tour Tony - great practical insights :) Even better reason why the Mup mode is redundant (and why we don't need remotes for most things any more): - exposure delay mode. Set this to 3 seconds and it automates the whole process: raises the mirror, waits 3 seconds, takes the shot (this is true on the D810/D800 as well). All those "manual focus" buttons are also almost redundant if you disable AF on the shutter (ie use the back button for AF). If you want manual focus, don't press the AF button :) (almost all NIkon lenses for years have had manual focus rings that work even in AF mode). The only time I have to switch the body to manual focus is when using an old mechanically driven AF lens in manual focus. My cameras are set to continuous AF almost all the time. ( you do lose the beep and the AF assist light but that's about it).
Thank you! Great tutorial. I’m headed to Yosemite for firefall- which of your books discusses shooting in snow and capturing something like the firefall
Great video - thank you! You mentioned putting your name in on copyright, and I wanted to share a great tip someone shared with me. Take a picture of your business card and then “lock” that picture. That way if the camera gets lost, your contact info is there.
44:38 Best video tutorial ever! Thanks!!!! Do you have any advice for focusing mode for wedding? Like for the couple exit from ceremony. 3D tracking or AFC single?
Grateful for your intro to the camera. I have D850 coming and will be shooting underwater in a housing. It's very helpful having this to preview the features that I may find useful (over and above RTFM)
This is excellent, thank you for your time! We recently got several d850s for photographing designs as well as interviewing designers, and your guide was a great resource to improve our image and video quality. Thank you!
Thank you Tony, this has been a great time saver. I feel bad for not paying you for it and I already have your books so if you're ever over in Manchester UK my wife and I owe you guys lunch at my studio...
Tony, thank you for your time on this. As is always the case, some basic rehash for the experienced Nikon user, but I learned a LOT today watching this entire video. I know it takes a ton of effort to pull these together, I just want you to know that the content was super helpful. Now, off to shoot! Thanks again.
Great video, thank you. I love Northrup videos and books. They speak quickly and write crisply so you get a lot of great information in a relatively short amount of time.
Hi Tony, I watched it all and used my camera alone with, it is an outstanding video to watch, to learn all the functions in a short time. Very well explained too. Thanks for the great and professional recommendation too. Cheers
Wow! So much valuable information! I just purchased the D850 and this was a huge help! I can’t wait to see your other videos and check out the books/videos you have for sale.
Thank you for putting this together! I finally got my d850 after having ordered it back in September. I've had this video on my "watch later" list since I saw you came out with this. Overall this was a great walk through, as the d850 was different enough from my d5200 to confuse me. However, 1 important point I think you missed: Interval Shooting is disabled until you set the date and time for the camera. Also, the Interval Shooting part of the video - 00:50:59 - seems to have been incorrectly edited out. You introduce it, but then go directly into the next topic.
Yes, I noticed the same. I use the camera for astrophotography, so this segment would have been helpful. However, I also have a D810A, and I am sure that the setting would be close if not identical. This was another great video tutorial.
i never thought i'd spend ~2 hours watching a 1h 11m video end to end but this was worth it. thx tony... i think you spelled your name wrong in the copyright information.. its Bubbah Da Hut... not tony.. get it right next time....
After spending $3000+ on this camera, "free tutorial" is music to my ears. Thank you, Tony.
two years on, this is still my go to video for tutorial on the D850. Brilliant information and well presented.
Thank you very much.
Glad it was helpful!
very well represented with that monitor screen!

Baronial10 The best way to bracket is to use a 2s self timer. It avoids camera shake and also takes every bracketed shot with one press.
Yes, that's exactly what I said in my comment above... lol? Just a little shorter in wording than mine. But yeah, it's a fantastic feature!

Still the best full frame DSLR in 2019!!
Just bought D850 first thing was to watch your video,Thankyou so much for all the info.
Good idea!!!
Great video. I'm now coming back to this for the third time to learn more about my camera.
Awesome Tony. I just picked up the D850 after using the D800 for a few years now. Cheers!
I adjusted some of the setting through your video and now my camera is auto of focus when I use the viewfinder 😢
Adjust the diopter.
I just bought my D850 and the video was super helpful. Thank you.
Sir you are a complete tutor for photography well explained
i just ordered this camera, and I need to learn how utilize the camera. thanks for all of the great advice
I have recently purchased this camera and have found your tutorial very helpful. Thank you.
This is excellent, thank you for your time! We recently got several d850s for photographing designs as well as interviewing designers, and your guide was a great resource to improve our image and video quality. Thank you!
Great job Tony. Great Video. Much much nicer than reading multiple sections of the manual.
D850 the best camera in the world today.
D 850 is best
Nikon D850 king of DSLR ❤Today, Tomorrow and Forever 💯👍🏻
Thank you Tony, this has been a great time saver. I feel bad for not paying you for it and I already have your books so if you're ever over in Manchester UK my wife and I owe you guys lunch at my studio...
I just bought it 2 days ago! Can't wait to get my hands on
Tony, thank you for your time on this. As is always the case, some basic rehash for the experienced Nikon user, but I learned a LOT today watching this entire video. I know it takes a ton of effort to pull these together, I just want you to know that the content was super helpful. Now, off to shoot! Thanks again.
Thai is for this. I am a photography beginner and this cleared a lot of things up for me
Great video, thank you. I love Northrup videos and books. They speak quickly and write crisply so you get a lot of great information in a relatively short amount of time.
Excellent tutorial with clarity. Loads of learning. Thank you so much.
Thank you SO much for your most generous, informative and easy to understand way of explaining things!
Just picked up my Nikon D850 and this is an excellent resource, thank you!
You're both the most interest photo podcast bloggers on the net....we love you! However we do like to tease you every now and then though! :)

I'm on a T&C binge mode, just addicted to their content! I don't care about the subject or the length of the video, I just watch it.

Bought this yesterday, big achievement for me, can I say I’m proud?😜
Anyway, I’m 26 and I DON’T shoot with the live view 😄 always used the viewfinder

Tony, Great tutorial with lots of practical and worthy tips. There are many early tutorials out there, but you stand out. Congratualtions!
Thank you for the in depth review. I just bought the 850 looking forward to using it. Little late to the party though
Great and many thanks. Got a 580 OTW to Arches National yesterday. Review the video and here we go! You are amazing!

Thank you Tony, you answered alot of my questions. I shoot with the 850 and Canon R6.
Hi Tony, I watched it all and used my camera alone with, it is an outstanding video to watch, to learn all the functions in a short time. Very well explained too. Thanks for the great and professional recommendation too. Cheers
Grettings from India, Tony. I really appreciate your effort. Got my d850 yesterday and your video will get me going. THANKS.
You're the Go-To for me, I'm learning so much from you, Thank you, Tony.
Thank you Tony. Free video awesome , something to refer back to and Will also help to understand the Manual.
i never thought i'd spend ~2 hours watching a 1h 11m video end to end but this was worth it. thx tony... i think you spelled your name wrong in the copyright information.. its Bubbah Da Hut... not tony.. get it right next time....
