Simon actually had vocal cord surgery long ago. It was necessary, as he had a torn vocal cord sometime between Notorious and Big Thing, I think. I just remember hearing about it back then. That's why his speaking voice is much higher compared to the deep, rich tone of his younger years. Ever sense, he sings at a slightly higher tone, which enables him to hit all his high notes, as opposed to the infamously bad performance of A View To A Kill at Live Aid. It was so embarrassing for him that they omitted it from the Live Aid DVD. However, yes, he sounds exceptional!
